  • Brexit: chants of 'shame' as suspension of parliament descends into chaos

There were extraordinary scenes of chaos and anger in the House of Commons overnight as opposition MPs staged a protest against the suspension of parliament for five weeks – a prorogation that the Speaker of the House said represented “an act of executive fiat”. As John Bercow began proceedings to prorogue parliament, a group of opposition MPs carrying signs reading “silenced” drowned out Black Rod as she tried to address the Speaker, a ritual that initiates the suspension. Several MPs were also involved in altercation near the Speaker’s chair, as they attempted to prevent him leaving his seat and attending...
  • Is Trump Regretful?

During the presidential campaign last year, it seemed at times that Donald Trump was as surprised as the governing and chattering classes when he surged to the lead in the Republican primaries and secured the nomination. During and after the convention, it also appeared to some that Trump was not intent on winning the election, given some of his actions and comments and the disarray of his election team, until Kellyanne Conway took over. This even led to speculation by some that Trump was an agent of the Clintons, convinced to run in a devious plot hatched by Bill to...
  • Freedom Caucus drives dagger into heart of young Trump Presidency

It is hard to overestimate the damage the Freedom Caucus has done to the fledgling presidency of Donald Trump, and to the country. By blocking the American Health Care Act of 2017, the conservative group has guaranteed that Americans will struggle forward under the burden of Obamacare. In the next few months insurers will announce their premium hikes for the coming year; chances are, given the continuing withdrawal of major companies from the marketplaces and the ongoing failure of the bill to attract enough young and healthy participants, the new rates will not be pretty. Last year premiums went up...
  • Hey, Freedom Caucus blow your no vote out your hypocritical @#%es

The same people who just voted no on Paul Ryan's bill because it wasn't "conservative" enough, are the same people who voted to make Paul Ryan speaker of the House. Why? Was Ryan more conservative back then, then he is today? Did Ryan promise them something, in order to get their vote. Or is the FC just a bunch of hypocrites. I think honest people know the answer.
  • Leaders, Activists Throwing in the Towel in Copenhagen

    12/18/2009 12:05:11 PM PST · by DadOfFive · 131 replies · 4,032+ views
COPENHAGEN — Has Copenhagen collapsed? That seems to be the growing sentiment inside the city's Bella Conference Center, where officials, environmentalists and even delegates to the international climate conference began streaming out Friday evening. What began with excitement and anticipation two weeks ago ended Friday night with disappointment and anger for thousands. "This is a sad day for my country," said Mama Konate, chief delegate from the West African nation of Mali. "We have worked very hard to reach this agreement. And now it seems over. Without a deadline, I don't know if we will ever finish." The conference, the...
  • Immigrants Feel Less Welcome in Frederick

The changes have also brought thousands of Hispanics, some legal immigrants and others not, who have migrated up Interstate 270 to meet the demand for construction and service jobs. Until now, the county has handled the influx with outreach classes in schools and community policing programs. Chic Hispanic restaurants flourish in downtown Frederick, and working-class Latinos have remained relatively invisible. Suddenly, however, their presence is igniting a controversy that some fear could escalate into the kind of war over illegal immigration that has torn apart Prince William County. In the past month, the Frederick County sheriff has joined with federal...

President Bush's uncle made more than $450,000 last month by selling stock in a defense contractor whose profits are growing because of the Iraq war, records show. William H.T. Bush made the money by exercising stock options in St. Louis-based Engineered Support Systems, Inc. Bush is a member of ESSI's board of directors and therefore had to report the sale to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Bush, the youngest brother of former President George H.W. Bush, did not return a telephone message seeking comment Wednesday afternoon. He told the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the stock sale Wednesday, that...
