An exploding electric bike battery was behind the fire last week at an Auburn inn. According to the Auburn Fire Department, the fire happened just before 6:00p on August 15 at the Cayuga Inn at the Finger Lakes (formerly the Days Inn) at 37 William St. Crews quickly made their way to the second-floor room where there were multiple fires were found. After extinguishing the fires, investigators determined an e-bike battery exploded, causing individual cells to scatter around the room. Damage was largely contained to the room with minor water damage on the first floor room below. There were no...

NEW YORK (AP) — After a series of fires involving faulty e-bike batteries including a recent blaze that claimed four lives, New York City officials announced Sunday that they are receiving a $25 million emergency grant from the federal government to fund scores of charging stations citywide. Mayor Eric Adams hopes the stations will provide a safer way for delivery workers, who rely on e-bikes to efficiently do their jobs, to recharge lithium batteries used to power their bicycles. New York City has seen over 100 fires and 13 deaths this year linked to e-bikes, more than double the total...

There's important information for the owners of tens of thousands of electric bikes. Stop using and charging them, because they're being recalled. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Jetson Electric Bikes announced the recall of about 53,000 electric bikes. The bikes are 42-volt Jetson Rogue self-balancing scooters/hoverboards, and the problem is with their lithium-ion battery packs. The batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard. ... The CPSC reported two sisters, 10 and 15 years old, were killed in a fire, and a 42-volt Jetson Rogue was the point of origin. The tragedy happened April 1, 2022, near Allentown, Pa.,...

Many of the fires start when people charge bikes overnight, allowing them to overheat ... The fires appear to be concentrated in New York City, where the number of blazes more than doubled last year to 216, according to the New York City Fire Department. Fires from e-bikes and other so-called micromobility devices such as electric scooters have injured 40 people and killed two this year, the fire department said. “These are incredibly dangerous devices if they are unregulated or used improperly,” New York Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said at a press conference in late February. ... Many e-bike fires...

Some building owners, mainly in New York City, are clamping down on electric bicycles after a recent spate of damaging and deadly battery fires. Why it matters: E-bikes are surging in popularity, but the benefits they bring — lower emissions, easy transportation — are threatened by the growing toll of injuries and deaths from blazes sparked by their lithium-ion batteries. E-bike advocates link the problems to batteries that are poorly made, refurbished or improperly charged. New York has seen "an exponential increase" in battery fires this year, Daniel Flynn, chief fire marshal at the New York City Fire Department (FDNY),...

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s thousands of food delivery workers will get places to recharge electric bike batteries, cellphones and themselves, under a city plan announced Monday to turn abandoned newsstands and other unused structures into facilities for the “deliveristas.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Mayor Eric Adams called the “hubs” a national first. It’s not yet clear how many will be built or exactly where and when; officials say they’re working to identify suitable locations on city property. “Essential workers need the essential tools to do their jobs,” Adams, a Democrat, said at a news...

Wind turbines. Solar panels. Electric cars, nuclear reactors, geothermal energy. The $369 billion climate package unveiled by Democrats last week is chock-full of subsidies for technologies meant to rein in planet-warming pollution. But there’s one popular, emissions-free machine conspicuously absent from what could be the nation’s most significant piece of climate legislation yet: the bicycle. Provisions designed to supercharge the sale and use of traditional bikes and the battery-powered variety were dropped from the climate deal reached by Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Joe Manchin III (W.Va.), the Senate’s most conservative Democrat. The absence is grinding the...

Tell Me About Your RideYesterday, I inadvertantly hijacked a Bible Thread in the Religion Forum to talk about my Motorcycle. Since I started riding in late Autumn of 1972, next year will mark my 50th Anniversary on two wheels. At the time, women were not as avid bikers as they are today. My Present Bike is pictured above, and is a 93FXR in "Sapphire Blue". I bought it at Hampton Roads Harley Davidson on the way home from attending Rolling Thunder. I traded in my Sportster and did the 700 mile ride home on that beautiful bike. From the VIN,...

For many years, Berkeley bike advocates have pushed for their own lane on a two-block stretch of Fulton Street. The conditions seem ripe for one. It would connect two existing bike lanes in a bustling area between UC Berkeley and downtown. Bike racks already line the sidewalk. But when asked, the city delivered an answer the advocates say they have heard time and again: The bike lane couldn’t go in because of the state’s premier environmental law. The California Environmental Quality Act, known as CEQA, has stymied bike lanes up and down the state for more than a decade. Los...
