An exploding electric bike battery was behind the fire last week at an Auburn inn.
According to the Auburn Fire Department, the fire happened just before 6:00p on August 15 at the Cayuga Inn at the Finger Lakes (formerly the Days Inn) at 37 William St.
Crews quickly made their way to the second-floor room where there were multiple fires were found. After extinguishing the fires, investigators determined an e-bike battery exploded, causing individual cells to scatter around the room.
Damage was largely contained to the room with minor water damage on the first floor room below. There were no injuries reported and the business was able to stay open.
Crews were assisted at the scene by the Auburn Police Department and Auburn City Ambulance.
Following this event, the fire department is warning of the dangers of lithium-ion battery explosions. E-bike batteries should not be stored or charged near exit doors or anything flammable. Once charging is complete the battery should be unplugged from the charger.
If an e-bike or e-scooter catches fire, the fire department adds you should not try to put it out. Instead, leave the building immediately and call 911 as lithium-ion battery fires can be extremely hot and spread quickly.
Go Green!
End up Black!....................
This is why e-bikes needs to have their battery packs certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). If we can charge the larger battery packs on modern computer laptops safely under the USB Forum Power Delivery 3.x standard, then that standard should also be applied for e-bike battery charging.
How many times does this need to happen before people refuse to buy them???
Do not enter confined areas with one of these batteries such as an elevator
e-battery explodes in elevator (disturbing)

Just yesterday my wife came in and showed me her big 20,000 maH USB power brick she carries because it has so much capacity it basically never needs to be charged given her usage. It was all bulging so much that the exterior case was cracking open. I took it immediately to a battery recycling place and they guy looked like I’d walked in with a piece of toxic waste. I’m thinking they didn’t want that one in there anymore than I did.
they are a favorite of urbanites. No pedaling or licenses required. Best of both worlds.
I do not have an E-Bike.
However, I rented a couple when my wife and I went to Bar Harbor earlier this month. They made getting around Acadia fun. Go up a hill doing 20-25 mph. Instead of getting all sweaty. They made exploring that national park even more.
I think the really cheap E Bikes also use cheap batteries. In a lot of cases the battery is over half the cost of the bike.
If your battery comes from a reputable company like Samsung you are probably okay. If it is some company you have never heard of... you get what you pay for.
I’m going to guess that the reason they don’t already do that is cost.

A few days ago I ran across a guy with an e-bike. He boasted he could go 40 miles on a charge and carried a spare battery. I implied they were dangerous, and could catch fire.
His reply was only the bad ones and that he had good ones.
OK, great. He can keep them.
And at a campsite a couple weeks ago a guy was boasting about his power pack. It could run their toaster or TV or whatever. I was so impressed I jotted down the info with intent to get one.
It turned out to have a lithium battery.
Thanks, but no thanks.
I expect we’ll see a lot more of these as e-bikes are becoming a popular alternative to cars for urban people, but they like to drag them into their apartments instead of parking them outside. Recipe for disaster.
That man died 28 days later in the hospital, from his injuries.

Imagine any college dormitory where people and ebikes are packed a lot closer together.
I knew he died. I didn’t know he lived for 28 days. How he must have suffered.
E bikes are not about going green.
They are about making bike riding accessible to people who need assistance pedaling, particularly on hills due to bad knees, bad backs, cardiac conditions, etc.
If you don’t buy a cheap crap e bike, you will get safe battery packs. If you abuse those packs, then they are no longer safe.
Bikes get wet and crash which are dangerous for batteries.
To recycle the cell phones the companies that do so have to be very careful not to puncture the battery. They cannot just grind up the phone and sort out the precious metals.
See my post #8 The VAST majority of these ebikes are urbanites.
