Tell Me About Your Ride

Yesterday, I inadvertantly hijacked a Bible Thread in the Religion Forum to talk about my Motorcycle. Since I started riding in late Autumn of 1972, next year will mark my 50th Anniversary on two wheels. At the time, women were not as avid bikers as they are today. My Present Bike is pictured above, and is a 93FXR in "Sapphire Blue". I bought it at Hampton Roads Harley Davidson on the way home from attending Rolling Thunder. I traded in my Sportster and did the 700 mile ride home on that beautiful bike. From the VIN, we have ascertained that she was born in the York, PA Plant sometime in June 1992, so next year, "Blue" will be thirty. Blue and I have done 8 Rolling Thunder Rallies together, one Daytona, Blue Ridge Parkway, The Colonial Triangle, Laconia and the Kangamangus Highway, Alligator Alley and Florida's Gulf Coast, The Florida Keys, I95 the whole way, and the Appalachians in West Virginia (Monongahela State Forest and Blackwater Falls). We have gone through Hurricanes, Tornadoes, and Flash Floods together. I'm posting this thread so we can share our stories without having to hijack a Bible Thread LOL!

Let Me hear From You.

“Tell Me About Your Ride”

Building a “Bitchin Rides” caliber 1964.5 Mustang. Stupid money involved.

Just got it back from paint and body. Will be assembling it over the winter.

Tell Me About Your Ride

In 1972, against the vigorous objection of our parents, Mike and I got married. Since we were as poor as dirt, we lived on the Third Floor of a Triple-Decker in Boston's Jamaica Plain Neighborhood. Now, that area is very chic, but in 1972 was was considered a blighted area. We had neither a couch nor a car, but we made do with a single bed mattress on the floor covered with pillows (very "BOHO"), and took the unreliable Green-Line trolley to work. Anyway, somebody gave us $200.00 to buy either a couch or a car, and the only thing available at that inflated price was a used 68 Honda CB175. So that's what we got. I learned to actually DRIVE on it, amid the trolley tracks and cobblestones of Boston's Inner City. The tracks threw me more than once, but I just right back on and kept riding. However, 175 cc's were hardly adequate for two people, groceries, and laundry, so just a few months later, I traded up.

Unfortunately not. That was before the age of smartphones and digital cameras were still in their infancy...............

I love Mustangs. My Mom had a Red 67 Ragtop that my brothers restored for her. It got stolen from the Dedham Mall Parking lot. Mom has passed and Dedham Mall is gone, but I bet that Mustang is still rolling...somewhere.

I don’t have pictures of my old bikes either, so I enter the description into “DuckDuckGo” and find something similar.

Do the low profile shocks reduce the rear wheel travel?

My favorite bike to date, after owning a number of bikes, is this 1200cc 2014 BMW GS Adventure.

(not my bike but same thing)

I have some powder coating ready for all the jalopies, mostly misc pieces.

The biggest is a crossmember for my Willys jeep.

I’d love to farm my 750 or blazer out but with the economic situation, I dare not think of taking on any big expensive liabilities.

One piece at a time ala Johnny Cash.

The CB175 soon proved to be inadequate for our needs, so Mike and I rode two-up to Boston Cycles (no longer there) and traded it in for a Honda CB350. We did everything with that bike, including camping out in the Berkshires. We loaded our tent, sleeping bags, all our camping gear, and both of us and camped under the stars in some nameless forest. We saw Richie Havens in an outdoor concert (it rained, but then the sun came out with a magnificent rainbow, just as Havens was singing "Here Comes The Sun", and on the way back to our campsite, we were knocked over by some guy with New Jersey Plates. Since he didn't stick around to exchange papers, and since we were in the middle of nowhere with no cell phone, we just righted the bike, got back on, and rode home. Perhaps all the camping gear piled onto the bike cushioned our fall? Who Knows.
