NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s thousands of food delivery workers will get places to recharge electric bike batteries, cellphones and themselves, under a city plan announced Monday to turn abandoned newsstands and other unused structures into facilities for the “deliveristas.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Mayor Eric Adams called the “hubs” a national first. It’s not yet clear how many will be built or exactly where and when; officials say they’re working to identify suitable locations on city property.
“Essential workers need the essential tools to do their jobs,” Adams, a Democrat, said at a news conference Monday outside one of the shuttered newsstands that could become a venue for the recharging hubs.
The hubs are to offer charging stations and a safe place to rest or take shelter from bad weather. (As for restrooms, a city law that took effect in January guarantees delivery workers the right to use restaurants’ facilities when collecting orders.)

the greatest govt program since the govt built gas stations all across the US
what?
oh never mind
Good thing NYC doesn’t have any more important problems.
Same with bike paths...never seen anyone on one yet. Not that they aren't occasionally used...but they're certainly not cost effective.
Been doing fine for two years...Why fix something if it’s not broken??
They can co-locate with the “safe” drug injection sites.
Looks like a fun job. Food might be cold by the time you get it.
Meanwhile, 50 people were shot, stabbed, robbed, beaten, raped, shoved on train tracks etc. But priorities.
Not handicap accessible. I would give it a week of operation to have 2 or more blind or simply stupid people walk into or insert some solid object into the propellers.
Homeless will urinate on them cause electric shorts.
(How to reduce homeless population.)
Concerns? Who is against food delivery people lounging next to filthy homeless people? Who is needs clean food delivered?
“Homeless will urinate on them cause electric shorts.”
Don’t quit your dayjob
I witnessed how Amazon is “dealing” with all the new traffic rules (and mess) in the streets of lower Manhattan, this past weekend.
Yesterday, in the drizzling rain, I encountered multiple Amazon delivery folks, with no Amazon truck in site, trolling the streets looking for addresses with just boxes hand horizontal laying trucks and no safety from the rain for their boxes.
I told one Amzaon worker whose handtruck had just tipped boxes onto the wet sidewalk - due to large cracks in the sidewalk, that he and his coworkers “should tell Amazon to get them better equipment, THEY can affor it”.
The public charging stations I have seen around here are open air. Maybe some of them have a hood to protect people from the rain - I don’t remember. I’ve not seen any with a bathroom.
I don’t know how long it takes to recharge.
This has Babylon Bee potential—the robots that replace the workers need to get recharged.
;-)
If that happens, the family of the homeless will sue, claiming that these devices were dangerous to the general public. If criminals or derelict types get killed or injured, then the city will be sued.
30 minutes or it’s free?
I live in a college town just outside of the campus core. A few years ago a bike company wiggled their way into town. They have to be heavily subsidized. Bikes are often littered in the neighborhood for several days before they disappear. In the last year, electric bikes have made their way into town. It is still the same issue as the peddle bikes. It is hard to see how the company makes any profit unless heavily subsidized.
Profit? Profit doesn't even factor into their equations. They're in the business of grabbing taxpayer money.
