What can a Big Mac tell us about currency rates? As it turns out, quite a lot.The Big Mac Index, created by The Economist in 1986, started out as a simple tool to make currency theory more digestible. Now, it’s a widely-known measure in popular economics to assess and compare currency valuations. In short, the Big Mac index compares the purchasing power parity (PPP) of currencies using the price of a Big Mac in the U.S. as the benchmark. It shows how much a Big Mac costs in various countries compared to the U.S., but it also works as a way...

In 2023, McDonald's made the headlines quite a few times, whether it was for Grimace milkshakes, limited-edition meals, or its brand-new sister restaurant. But in the midst of all the excitement and newness is a story that seems to have been lost in the shuffle: when the fast food chain promised to make its burgers bigger and better. Back in Spring 2023, McDonald's announced it was tweaking its Big Mac to taste even more delicious, with softer buns, better tasting toppings, and even more of that sweet, sweet Big Mac sauce on every burger. And just last month, McDonald's CEO...

McDonald's even temporarily shut down offices across the US on Monday as it started to tell some corporate workers about the layoffs. In recent months, the fast food giant recruited pop culture...

McDonald’s Chicken Big Mac was a huge hit in the United Kingdom. Now it’s crossing the pond. Beginning later this month, the burger chain is testing the fan favorite at select restaurants in Miami for a limited time. The Chicken Big Mac is similar to its meaty sibling, however it replaces the two burgers with two tempura chicken patties. Of course, it also includes the signature Big Mac sauce, pickles, shredded lettuce and a slice of American cheese. McDonald’s briefly sold the limited-time offering earlier this year in the UK. The Chicken Big Mac was so popular that it sold...

McDonald's is faced with higher food and labor costs, is raising menu prices at a much faster pace than historical rates, focused on preserving profits. The problem with higher-priced menu items is that they will diminish the buying power of the working poor who frequent the Chicago-based burger giant. Famous for the Big Mac burger, the company is paying more for food, packaging, and other supplies, CEO Chris Kempczinski told investors Wednesday. He said commodity costs are up 3.5% to 4%, up from the 2% increase earlier this year. On top of that, labor costs are up at least 10%....

Al Sharpton hit President Donald Trump for his weight during comments marking Martin Luther King Jr., Day in Harlem, quipping he should order three Big Macs instead of two. According to New York Times writer Shane Goldmacher, Sharpton complimented New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D.) as a "national celebrity" and, perhaps alluding to potential White House ambitions, said Trump should "get your best gloves out" before making the joke about Trump's fondness for fast food. It's a noteworthy comment from Sharpton, given his former obesity. The now slimmed down-Sharpton once weighed more than 300 pounds. In 2014, the New York...

Massachusetts is in the midst of debating the Fight for 15, with proposals on the table to raise the minimum wage that high at least for a few industries including big box stores and fast food outlets. THE inventor of the Big Mac has died at the age of 98. Michael “Jim” Delligatti came up with the iconic McDonald’s burger nearly 50 years ago. The franchise-owner from Uniontown Pennsylvania put the stacked treat on sale at one of his restaurants in 1968. McDonald’s initially did not approve of deviating from its strict formula of simple hamburgers, cheeseburgers and milkshakes. But the creation of a two-patty burger with lettuce, cheese, gherkins, onions and “special sauce” proved an instant hit, and was rolled out to his other 47 outlets across the US.

From the moment that Sharyl Attkisson met a shadowy source I’ll call Big Mac, she was plunged into a nightmare involving mysterious surveillance of her computers. They met at a McDonald’s in Northern Virginia at the beginning of 2013, and the source (she dubs him Number One) warned her about the threat of government spying. During their next hamburger rendezvous, Big Mac told Attkisson, then a CBS News reporter constantly at odds with the Obama administration, that he was “shocked” and “flabbergasted” by his examination of her computer and that this was “worse than anything Nixon ever did.” Attkisson’s forthcoming...
