Hi Guys, I found this in the attic. My father was in the WWII and he made Normandy. This emblem is on a dark green "Genuine Basque Beret" that was made in England. I searched the whole internet and can't identify it. I even tried google image search. Thank you The patch has a black background. The two gold stripes are outlined with red stitches. The rest is gold stitches.

Elite Army Green Berets are knocking the performance of the Afghan National Army, telling war tales of its soldiers hiding and quitting the fight. The Green Beret criticisms, contained in a U.S. Central Command “friendly fire” investigative file, provide a window into the flaws of a national army more than a decade in the making. The Special Forces soldiers gave poor marks to the institution that is supposed to keep Afghanistan’s democratically elected governments in power. The security force must rebuff an expected Taliban offensive, on its own, once all American troops leave after 2016.The soldiers gave statements to investigators after going...

The U.S. Army said Monday that it was abandoning the beret, after a failed 10-year experiment. The black beret, which proved deeply unpopular with American soldiers, will be replaced by a patrol cap for everyday wear, U.S. Army spokesman Col. Tom Collins said. The move came after outgoing Army chief of staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, asked the Army's sergeant major "to go out and talk to soldiers across the force and see what was on their minds," Collins told AFP. "One of the things that soldiers consistently brought up was the desire to wear the patrol cap as part of...

Vietnam-era Green Beret's body home 42 years laterBy the Associated Press Posted: 04/30/2011 01:03:00 AM PDT CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- No one had seen Sgt. 1st Class Donald Shue since he was on a mission in Laos during the Vietnam War in November 1969, so his sister was skeptical when Army officials called a few months ago to say his remains had been found. "I said, 'No you didn't. I don't believe it. It's been 42 years. You don't have any proof of that,' " said his sister, Betty Jones. Then they revealed the clue that identified Shue: a Zippo...

More than just a branch of America’s armed forces, the modern U.S. Marine Corps serves as a model that other military forces worldwide have attempted to emulate, with varying degrees of success. Marines are aware of this, and justifiably proud. But that pride has not always been conducive to working and playing well with others.

The American military beret used to be something hard earned ("Mistrial for Lynndie," May 5). Thanks to former Chief of Staff, General Eric Shinseki, however, the Ranger black beret is now issued to all Army recruits — even if desk-bound or in a non-combat zone. If ever a symbol of excellence and sacrifice in soldiering has been diluted, this is it. The adoption of a beret for everyone is nothing short of an insult to all elite Airborne, Ranger and Special Forces units, past and present, who've earned the special right to wear the black beret. If no other good...

Kerry/Rassmann swift boat stories collide In a major gaffe, Camp Kerry was caught today with colliding stories concerning Kerry’s Vietnam heroics. [see FreeRepublic thread] In a much touted tale, Kerry is credited with saving the life of Green Beret veteran Jim Rassmann while they were on a 5-boat patrol during the Vietnam War. The group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth vehemently denies Kerry’s story and has supplied proof that Kerry lied about the circumstances behind his pulling Rassmann out of the river. In an Aug. 10, 2004, editorial published in the Wall Street Journal, Green Beret veteran Jim Rassmann...

Bloodshed as Kirkuk falls By Sam Kiley in northern Iraq 10 April 2003 I was caught up in a dramatic firefight today as the allied push through northern Iraq claimed the key oil town of Kirkuk. In a major advance for the coalition campaign, I accompanied US marines and Kurdish peshmerga forces as they reached positions on the very edge of the city and then thrust further into the centre. Groups of Kurdish fighters, including women, marched in to be met by crowds of celebrating locals. But the path to Kirkuk was perilous. In Laylan, our unit of Kurds and...

SHE tried to be as gentle as she could. "I am very sorry but you will never be able to join Her Majesty’s Forces. You are colour-blind I’m afraid." It wasn’t a total surprise that my perennial difficulty with pastel shades had transformed itself, officially, into a disability that barred me from service with the Army, RAF or Royal Navy - at least according to my Broughty Ferry doctor. Even all those years ago, such a verdict wasn’t deemed to be too much of a handicap to life’s chances. Volunteering to become a sailor, soldier or airman in the years...

TENSIONS between Britain and the US over the conduct of the Iraq war were growing last night as British commanders voiced their dismay at American soldiers’ heavy-handed tactics. The strains burst into the open after US troops fired on a civilian vehicle, killing the driver, hours after seven Iraqi women and children were shot dead at a checkpoint. An Apache helicopter was also said to have blown up a lorry, killing 15 members of a single family, yesterday. Such killings highlighted a series of military and political differences that senior British government sources say are creating “hairline cracks in...

TAM O’ Shanter perched atop his head, pistol secured in its holster on his belt, steel-rimmed glasses pushed back on to the bridge of his nose, Lieutenant-Colonel Mike Riddell-Webster, the commanding officer of the Black Watch, is striding through the crowded market place in the centre of the town of Az Zubayr. Yesterday, this street was thought still too dangerous to drive down in a soft-skinned Land Rover, but the CO has decided - enough is enough. After days of sitting back and watching his troops come under attack from militia men armed with mortars, AK47s and rocket-propelled grenades, he...

OK, if nobody else will do it, I'm going to patch up this spat between the United States and France. As you know, our two nations are not getting along, as evidenced by the high-level meeting in Paris last week, during which French President Jacques Chirac and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, in what aides described as ''a frank exchange of views,'' bit each other. Yes, relations are at an all-time low. The French view us as a bunch of fat, simplistic, SUV-driving, gum-chewing, gun-shooting, mall-dwelling, John Wayne cowboys who put ketchup on everything we eat, including breath mints....
