You may not know that while the bald eagle has been adopted as America’s symbol of liberty and freedom since the 1780s, it’s not the official national bird. Cynthia Lummis introduced a bill Thursday to finally make it official. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For many, the majestic sight of a bald eagle soaring overhead evokes a sense of patriotism and freedom that’s at the heart of being an American. What most of those people probably don’t know is that while the bald eagle has widely been adopted as the symbol of America going back to the 1780s, it’s not the official national bird....

A Pennsylvania poacher who allegedly killed a Pittsburgh suburb’s beloved bald eagle later turned themselves in — but locals are fuming at the lack of information on the suspect from authorities. “The killing of our beloved eagle had a major impact on the entire community,” Cherry Valley Lakeview Estates resident Linda Carnevali told The Post Saturday. “We cannot fathom why anyone would want to harm our eagles and take it to the extreme of killing one.” The eagle, who Carnevali and her husband Raymond called “Sam” after the popular character “Sam the Eagle” in Disney’s Muppet Vision 3D, was allegedly...

Last month in Nebraska, two 20-year-old Hondurans, Ramiro Hernandez-Tziquin and Domingo Zetino-Hernandez, shot a bald eagle and were planning to cook it and eat it. The two Hondurans, carrying a dead bald eagle, were arrested by the Stanton County Sheriff’s department on February 28, right outside a state wildlife management area. The illegal alien eagle-killers didn’t speak English and deputies had to use a translation app to communicate with them. The only form of ID they were carrying were documents from the Honduran consulate.

Tucked away on the highest branch of a eucalyptus tree standing at least 100 feet tall near the edge of San Francisco Bay is an unusual sight. For just over two months, golfers and birders alike have been watching a pair of bald eagles gather wayward twigs and soft clumps of grass to bring to the nests they’re building about half a mile from the clubhouse at Corica Park Golf Course in Alameda. Rick Lewis, who lives in Alameda and has been a birder and wildlife photographer for decades, said he’s spent 62 days in a row carefully observing and...

The chick was sleeping Monday on one of its parents' feet when "the parent took off, and it just accidentally knocked the chick out of the nest," research ecologist Peter Sharpe, who oversees the bald eagle restoration project on the Channel Islands in California, told CNN. Sharpe and his team are monitoring 21 bald eagle nests on the islands this season. The eaglet fell between 10 and 15 feet and landed in a steep gully, Sharpe said. The nest is monitored with a video camera that captured the fuzzy youngster's dramatic fall. The rescue team arrived Tuesday, and Sharpe and...

A contest fundraiser to name the little eaglet is open until March 25. After the deadline, 35 names will be randomly drawn. The names will then be given to local Big Bear third grade classrooms for a final vote. After that, all submissions will be entered into a random drawing for prizes, including Jackie and Shadow plush toys, a framed painting of the bald eagle couple, an eagle tapestry, and other gifts. Since the chick’s gender is not known, a name that isn’t gender specific would work best, organizers said. Friends of Big Bear Valley has been posting updates on...

Hikers and dog walkers along a Juneau trail on Monday spotted something unusual, an eagle hanging upside down in the trees. Although the eagle ultimately did not survive, its rescue led to a compassionate and painless end of life. J.D. McComas says they were tipped off by Juneau resident Laurie Craig who was walking the Emergency Vehicle Access Road, commonly known as the airport dike trail. In the trees near the south end of the floatplane pond was what appeared to be an eagle hanging upside down like a bat. At first, the eagle appeared dead. But then it moved...

I’ve been keeping my nose to the ground looking for lighthearted videos to share lately, and found one yesterday that might put a smile on your face. It’s a video of a bald eagle sitting on what appears to be somebody’s back porch, and the person shooting the video has apparently struck a deal with the bird where he gives it a snack and gets a song in return. First of all, the guy behind the camera in this video kind of cracks me. And I don’t know about you, but this was a nice little break from the rest...

Ohio’s bald eagle population has soared by 151 percent since the last statewide headcount eight years ago, wildlife officials announced Wednesday. This year’s survey found 707 bald eagle nests, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). There were just 281 in 2012. “The bald eagle is a symbol of American strength and resilience,” Gov. Mike DeWine said. “The eagle’s comeback in Ohio and across the country proves that we can overcome any challenge when we work together.”

Trapped in the confines of four walls, springtime spent in quarantine can feel uninspiring, if not isolating. But as Gregory Chiate’s son looked outside his window in Marin County one recent morning, he realized he wasn’t alone. On top of a towering conifer outside perched a bald eagle: the first one his father had seen since they moved there 11 years ago. The birds have been making a comeback, according to Shannon Burke, an interpretive naturalist with Marin County Parks, though it’s not necessarily because the area has been deserted by people. (Coyotes are a different story in San Francisco.)...

For nearly two months, a pair of bald eagles in the San Bernardino National Forest have watched vigilantly over two eggs laid in early January, but officials say it’s looking like the eggs aren’t likely to hatch. The chicks should have been born around Valentine’s Day, but on Feb. 21 — more than 40 days after the eggs were laid — the U.S. Forest Service delivered the disappointing news. “It’s hard to say this,” the officials wrote on Facebook in announcing that the odds were against the eggs hatching. The chances “are diminishing each day,” they wrote. “The window of...
