A replica of the Titanic will set sail in 2022, retracing the original ship’s planned route, Cruise Arabia & Africa reports. The project was first announced in 2012, but was halted due to financial problems. Now, with the issues resolved, Blue Star Line has announced that construction has continued on the vessel. The ship will have “the same interiors and cabin layout as the original vessel, while integrating modern safety procedures, navigation methods and 21st century technology,” said Clive Palmer, chairman of Blue Star Line. The ship will sail from Dubai to Southampton, England, and then to New York. The...

ER Braithwaite, the Guyanese author of To Sir, With Love, has died at his home in Maryland at the age of 104. Born in Guyana on 27 June 1912, Eustace Edward Ricardo Braithwaite was the child of privileged parents, both graduates of Oxford University. His father was a diamond miner while his mother raised the family. During the second world war, he joined the Royal Air Force to fight as a pilot before going on to Cambridge to read physics. He later said that he experienced no racial prejudice within the RAF. On graduating, he found himself barred from work...

“ANGELS & DEMONS”: THE ANTI-CATHOLIC AGENDA March 4, 2009 Catholic League president Bill Donohue exposes the anti-Catholic agenda of “Angels & Demons” (the movie opens May 15):“John Calley, co-producer with Brian Grazer of both ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and ‘Angels & Demons,’ told the New York Times that the former movie was ‘conservatively anti-Catholic.’ According to the Times, Grazer wants ‘Angels & Demons’ to be ‘less reverential’ than ‘The Da Vinci Code.’ Which means he wants it to be liberally anti-Catholic.“Author Dan Brown says of his latest film, ‘It’s certainly not anti-Catholic.’ So could it be that he simply...
  • Movie: Miracle of St Anna -- Offensive to Christians/Catholics?

I am not sure why Spike Lee is making a movie with such a Christian title. But it probably has much more in common with the movie The Eagle Has Landed than any sort of Christian movie... It is an R for REJECT movie -- an R-rated film. It sounds like a Christian movie with its title. But there is too much ADULT CONTENT to be PG or G or PG-13 and not much hope for this to be any sort of movie that Christians will want to go to (or anyone). Of course, a very DIZZY studios is backing...
  • Sympathy for the devil: thoughts on 'The Golden Compass' [movie review]

Sympathy for the devil: thoughts on 'The Golden Compass' When the first Harry Potter movie arrived in theaters several years ago, many Catholic families had divided views about the film. Some enjoyed it as an innocent and intriguing fantasy. Others avoided it because of its emphasis on magic. But the screen adaptation of Philip Pullman’s book, “The Golden Compass,” which opened in Denver on Dec. 7, will likely produce far more agreement. No matter how one looks at it, “The Golden Compass” is a bad film. There’s just no nicer way to say it. I saw it at an 8:30...

Nicolas Cage to star in upcoming 9/11 movie Fri Jul 8, 2005 7:50 PM ET By Steve Gorman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Nicolas Cage will star as a real-life policeman who survived the collapse of the World Trade Center in what would be one of Hollywood's first films to dramatize the Sept. 11 attacks on America, Paramount Pictures said on Friday. Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone is on board to direct the untitled movie, which centers on the story of the last two men -- a pair of Port Authority police officers -- rescued from the rubble of the twin...

In 1993, CBS aired a miniseries of preposterous exaggeration about global warming, The Fire Next Time. A smart writer--okay, me--wrote of the show: The CBS miniseries depicted a man and boy attempting to travel the Mississippi River in an ecologically ruined United States of the year 2007, a world of searing warmth, sustained droughts, hyper-storms and dangerous exposure to bad dialogue. Conservative critics were aghast, saying the film indoctrinated audiences with greenhouse scenarios far worse than any projected by the most pessimistic computer model. My reaction was the opposite. By trivializing the greenhouse effect into a subject as ludicrous as...
