When George Floyd was allegedly killed by a callous police officer needlessly placing his knee to his neck for several minutes, the nation was united, for about a minute. Nobody in America looked at that video and thought, “that guy got what he deserved.” Nobody. And yet, leftist-led protests that quickly turned to lawless riots quickly turned off a huge segment of law-abiding American society. Authorities in Georgia ruled Sunday that the fatal police shooting of Rayshard Brooks outside an Atlanta Wendy’s was a homicide. Brooks, 27, died after he was shot twice in the back on Friday, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office said in a statement. Brooks was shot after a confrontation with two Atlanta police officers in the parking lot. Police had been summoned there on a report of a man sleeping in his car in the drive-through.

On Friday night in Atlanta, we witnessed an all-too-familiar scene in the age of viral video. A bystander used a cellphone to capture video of two cops engaged in a violent struggle on the ground with a noncompliant suspect. Rayshard Brooks, a 27-year old black man, apparently fell asleep at the wheel in a Wendy’s drive-thru lane. After a citizen’s complaint call, two Atlanta Police Department officers were dispatched and encountered Brooks, who was now parked in the lot.
