An aquarium and shark lab in Hendersonville is expecting a miracle birth any day -- with some exciting new additions. The Aquarium and Shark Lab by Team ECCO in downtown Hendersonville has an expectant stingray named Charlotte. But this pregnancy isn't just any normal pregnancy -- and because of that, staff thought the swelling they started to see in Charlotte in September might be cancer. Why? Because there was no possible way for her to have become pregnant -- or so they thought -- as there were no male sting rays in the tank. 'Miraculous birth' expected from stingray with...

A man was arrested and will be charged Friday after he dove naked into the aquarium at a Bass Pro Shop in Leeds, Alabama. Leeds Police Chief Paul Irwin said the incident happened shortly before the store closed. The 42-year-old man reportedly began acting erratically and intentionally drove a vehicle into a pole in the store parking lot, the chief said. The man’s family told police he suffers from mental illness. After the crash, police said the suspect exited the vehicle, stripped his clothes off and ran into the Bass Pro Shop. Once inside, the man jumped into the aquarium.

The largest free standing aquarium in the world, containing close to 1,500 exotic fish, exploded early Friday morning in Berlin, injuries at least two people. The explosion of the AquaDom aquarium caused a torrent of water, fish and debris to flood the street outside the building, Berlin emergency officials said, according to CNN. The AquaDom was housed in the main floor of the Radisson Collection hotel in Berlin’s DomAquarée business complex. "In addition to the unbelievable maritime damage... two people were injured by glass splinters," the city’s police tweeted. Over 100 firefighters were sent to the scene of the accident....

Authorities searching for a missing 65-year-old man found human remains inside a fish tank in his San Francisco home, police announced Tuesday. A relative of Brian Egg called authorities and reported him missing on Aug. 7, sparking the initial investigation, according to a San Francisco Police Department news release. About a week later, on Aug. 15, homicide investigators went to Egg’s residence in the 200 block of Clara Street, in the city’s South of Market neighborhood. When they searched inside, they discovered a human torso in a fish tank, according to Bay Area television station KNTV. Neighbor Scott Free told...

What began with a quick grab-and-go theft Saturday at the San Antonio Aquarium -- the suspect leaving a trail of water drops as he hurried away with his dripping prize of a small but very much alive shark -- ended Monday with the safe return of "Miss Helen" to her tank at the aquarium. The 16-inch female horn shark was taken during a heist that aquarium officials said was no spur-of-the-moment, let's-steal-a-shark thing. "The suspects staked out the pool for more than an hour" to wait for the right moment, the aquarium said in a statement. The search for the...

Civil disobedience will only work until the people realize nothing has been done – and that nothing can or will be done. When they finally understand that politicians, bureaucrats and corporate interests have completely destroyed their way of life, then we can fully expect violent confrontations and mid-east style, potentially armed, riots in the streets of America. This isn’t going away. In fact, the frustration, anger and desperation will continue to build pressure. Whether its the Tea Party movement, Occupy Wall Street, or other third-party protests, the momentum is gaining speed and strength.

TAMPA, Fla. – The driver and the child in her lap survived when a pickup truck slammed into a 1,500-gallon aquarium at Tampa International Airport. The tropical fish were not so lucky. Airport officials said 36-year-old Yamile Campuzano-Martine lost control of her truck and drove into the saltwater tank outside the American Airlines baggage claim Monday night. Airport spokeswoman Brenda Geoghagan said the driver had an unrestrained 6-year-old boy in her lap. About 90 percent of the 30 to 40 saltwater fish in the tank were killed. The aquarium was part of a public art program. The airport spent $200,000...

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) -- A large aquarium has likely saved a Cedar Rapids home that caught fire. The aquarium shattered at Ricky Kuda's home Friday morning after a transformer beneath the aquarium caught fire. The water from the aquarium extinguished the fire. Cedar Rapids Fire Department spokesman Greg Buelow says the damage would have been much more extensive if the aquarium hadn't shattered. Buelow says the aquarium was about 4 feet wide. No one was injured in the fire, but all of the fish in the tank died.

ATLANTA - The whale sharks are kings of the 6-million-gallon tank, their presence palpable even before they emerge from the murky darkness like massive star cruisers in a science fiction film. But once visitors to the new Georgia Aquarium have seen Ralph and Norton — the only whale sharks on display outside of Asia — they will still have at least 99,998 more fish to go. When the aquarium opens Nov. 23, it will become the world's largest by virtually all major standards of the industry. It was bankrolled almost exclusively by a $200 million gift from Home Depot Inc....

Some billionaires exercise their philanthropic bent by building museums or symphony halls. The legacy of Bernard Marcus, who runs an American DIY chain, will be the world's largest fish tank, almost 10 times the size of the London Aquarium. The Georgia Aquarium, due to open in Atlanta in November, will have 5m gallons of water (almost 19m litres) and more than 100,000 fish. It will be home to two white beluga whales, giant groupers and octopuses. The main attraction will be two whale sharks, the world's largest fish, which can grow to more than 40 feet. The sharks, Ralph and...

An animal rights group wants the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach to gut its cafeteria menu of fish and seafood, arguing that "serving fish at an aquarium is like serving poodle burgers at a dog show." Like Lilo in the animated "Lilo and Stitch," who refused to make a tuna sandwich for her friend, Pudge, a fish, because it would be "an abomination," the head of the Fish Empathy Project for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said serving fish at an aquarium just isn't right. "An institution with a mission that includes teaching people to respect...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - An animal rights group has called on one of the largest aquarium in the United States to stop serving fish to its visitors, likening the practice to grilling up "poodle burgers at a dog show." "It's easy to think of fish as swimming vegetables but of all the places in the country where fish should get a fair shake it's an aquarium," said Karin Robertson, manager of the Fish Empathy Project for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Robertson on Friday sent a letter to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, near Los...
