Vernon Jordan has died. He was 85. Jordan was a partner and an institution at the law firm where I worked. He had an office on the same floor I did. Vernon Jordan, the civil rights activist and Washington power broker whose private counsel was sought both by the powerful at the top levels of government and those in the corporate world, died on Monday at his home in Washington. He was 85.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A senior al Qaeda terrorist active in operational planning and training has been killed, a Western official said Thursday. He identified the terrorist as Abu Laith al-Libbi. The official said al-Libbi is "not far below the importance of the top two al Qaeda leaders" -- Osama bin Laden and Ayman al -Zawahiri.
