In life, some things are unavoidable: death, taxes — and if you live in South Florida — tolls. Coughing up money to drive on the highways add to the cost of living in South Florida. Drivers in Miami-Dade and Broward spent more than a half billion dollars in tolls fees in the last year. Consider: A daily trip from Kendall to downtown Miami costs over $4 roundtrip by Sunpass, or about $1,000 a year for a five-day a week, 50-week commuter. For those who haven’t signed up for Sunpass, the toll-by-plate rate of almost $8 per day amounts to $2,000...

f Democrat Andrew Gillum defeats Republican Ron DeSantis, Floridians will make history by electing the state’s first black governor. It’s an exciting prospect for many voters. “There’s certainly a buzz with our brother, Andrew Gillum, running for governor,” said Anthony Rankine-Palmer, president of the Florida Atlantic University chapter of the nonprofit community service and civic engagement group Progressive Black Men. “People see a familiar face. They see someone who looks like them.” But one thing that wouldn’t change, most Florida voters believe, is race relations. Three out of four Florida voters in the Quinnipiac University Poll released this week said...

A federal judge in Florida has decreed that 32 large county election officials must provide Spanish-language ballots, sample ballots and polling places with posted notices — a decision that will drive up the Democratic vote and perhaps provide the difference in close Midterms, including for Congress. The order by Chief Judge Mark Walker in Tallahassee is in response to the tens of thousands of Puerto Ricans who moved to Florida after Hurricane Maria last year. He wrote that not providing Spanish-language ballots to eligible voters would be a violation of the Voting Rights Act. “Puerto Ricans are American citizens,” Walker...

Gillum has said he is confident the investigation has nothing to do with him. "I’ve got no doubt in saying that I don’t expect any trouble my way because I know my conscience, I know how I vote, I...

The Democratic nominee for governor in Florida who ran a primary campaign claiming he was the only "true progressive" in the race is proposing a 40 percent hike in the state's corporate taxes, and is selling the idea in-part by comparing his proposed tax rates to California, one of the highest states for corporate taxation in the nation. "By adjusting our state corporate tax level to a modest 7.75%, which allows our richest corporations to receive a tax cut and keeps our corporate tax rate more than 1% lower than California, we'll be able to recoup at least $1 billion...
