I lived in Yokosuka, Japan for several years back in the Sixties, and we had the equivalent of a Department of Public Works on the base that was staffed by all Japanese.
At lunch, they would all go out and sit in a huge circle, and guys would sumo-wrestle during it, where they would lift their legs to stomp their feet and then throw salt into the ring.
As a ten year old kid, I thought it was the most alien and outlandish thing I had ever seen!
