Republicans on Tuesday appeared to take control of the Alabama Legislature, with top Republicans claiming to have close to 60 seats in the 105-member House of Representatives and about 22 seats in the 35-member Senate. ... Auburn University at Montgomery political scientist Brad Moody said Alabama was late in joining other Southeastern states in having at least one chamber of the Legislature controlled by Republicans. "It's a big deal. The Alabama Legislature just has been one of the last to switch from being Democratic controlled to Republican controlled," Moody said.

I just voted in my local GOP primary. I voted against my Senator and my Representative (Richard Shelby and Spenser Bachus). Both are reasonably solid Conservatives, and both will win their primaries easily.I voted against them to encourage others to run against them in the future. By my calculation, every vote against an encumbent is a vote to encourage potential candidates in the future.Thoughts?

With both parties' primaries just two months away, Alabama's gubernatorial race is wide open. The first Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 survey of likely voters in the state finds former State Senator Bradley Byrne, a Republican, as the only candidate to capture 50% of the vote, and that's in a match-up with Democratic Congressman Artur Davis who earns 33% support. Byrne leads the other Democrat in the race, State Agricultural Commissioner Ron Sparks, by a 43% to 33% margin. Sparks and Davis are battling for the Democratic nomination. Davis, who is seeking to be the first African-American governor of the state,...

UPDATE, 6:15 P.M.: An unbylined 11:57 a.m. AP report (i.e., 54 minutes after the time stamp of the original post at BizzyBlog) contains two paragraphs about Delahunt's involvement. Based on a search on Delahunt's last name at about 6:15 p.m., this version of AP's report is either still not at its main site, or has not been indexed by its search engine. Democratic Congressman Bill Delahunt's far from minor role in the 1986 release of Amy Bishop, the University of Alabama in Hunstville biology professor implicated in the murder of three colleagues on Friday, has garnered significant press attention in...

ANDALUSIA, Ala. — Among the men who gather every morning at 6 o’clock at the Church’s Chicken here on Three Notch Street, there is general agreement that the Obama administration is doing a very bad job of running the country. And the stakes are as high, as one coffee drinker put it, as the survival of the country’s culture, economy and way of life. Yet this group is represented in the House by a Democrat, Bobby Bright. And they are actually fond of him. For now. “I like Bobby,” said Glenn Cook, 72, a retired electrical engineer. “I think he’s...
