Delta Air Lines has become the US launch customer for Boeing’s 777-200LR. The US major confirms that the carrier will take delivery of two General Electric GE90-powered ultra long range widebodies in early 2008. The two -200LRs are converted from a 777-200ER order previously placed with Boeing. Three more 777 delivery slots are currently listed as unfilled on Boeing’s orders and deliveries website. However, Delta will not say if these too are being converted to -200LRs, adding that the slots “are options at this time”. If exercised, these three aircraft will be delivered “in the 2008 to 2010 timeframe”,...

The United States has now said that it will not allow direct flights to operate between Pakistan and any American destination. This move has been taken keeping in mind the recent terror threats. The US is also concerned about security at Pakistani airports and has promised to help Pakistan enhance security at all its airports and provided some equipment in this regard. Pakistan International Airways has three flights to New York, Houston and Chicago but they are not direct. They all make stopovers, mostly in European or gulf destinations. The move, aviation experts say, is suggestive of the US not...

The longer range and more fuel-efficient 747-8 may just be what airlines such as Qantas are looking for BOEING'S newest version of its 747 is turning heads at Qantas as the airline searches for solutions to reduce fuel costs while increasing the range capability of its fleet. Qantas had been examining the Boeing 777-200LR, which can fly from London to Sydney with a payload of 250 passengers, but the return journey requires a fuel stop in Singapore for at least half the year because of headwinds. According to Qantas sources, the 777 has been dropped from consideration. Also on...

LONDON -- It was the mother of all red-eye flights. Hong Kong to London the hard way, eastbound with the winds. Nonstop across two oceans and North America -- more than half way around the world. By the time the wheels of the Boeing jet touched down at London's Heathrow airport at 1:18 p.m. local time Thursday, it had set a distance record of 11,664 nautical miles. Flight time was 22 hours, 42 minutes. That's more than half-way around the world or, measured on the same scale your car's odometer uses -- 13,422 statute miles or 21,601 kilometers. Since the...

Offers fly as air giants vie to win over Qantas Geoffrey Thomas 11nov05 IT is the clash of the titans but the winner is bound to be Qantas. Not in its 85-year history has Qantas had offers on the table like the ones in front of the board right now. For Airbus and Boeing, the stakes are sky high. Qantas is a blue chip customer that both manufacturers want on their order books. Qantas wants up to 100 fuel-efficient jets to beat the fuel crisis and overfly airport hubs such as Singapore and Los Angeles. On the Qantas shopping list...

A Boeing 777 plane has landed at Heathrow Airport after completing a record-breaking non-stop flight. Piloted by American captain Suzanna Darcy-Hennemann, the plane touched down in west London following a 12,000-mile easterly-heading flight from Hong Kong. The plane, carrying 35 passengers, beat the existing non-stop passenger airline record of 10,823 miles achieved by another Boeing 777. Painted in Boeing's distinctive blue colours, the aircraft touched down at 1.13pm UK time after a flight of 22 hours and 42 minutes. Three Heathrow fire crews shot a celebratory water spray over the aircraft as it taxied to a halt after a journey...

The Boeing Co.'s new 777-200LR, billed as the world's longest-range jetliner, returned to Seattle Sunday after a round-the-world trip that included 24 cities as part of a promotional tour following the Paris Air Show in June. Now comes the big event that many aviation fans are waiting for -- the longest non-stop jetliner flight ever attempted without air refueling. As this column first reported last year, Boeing will take advantage of the 777-200LR's range to shatter the distance record established in 1997 by its sibling, the 777-200ER. The 777-200LR, which is still in flight tests, will attempt to fly non-stop...
