Delta Air Lines becomes US launch customer for Boeing 777-200LR

Delta Air Lines has become the US launch customer for Boeing’s 777-200LR.

The US major confirms that the carrier will take delivery of two General Electric GE90-powered ultra long range widebodies in early 2008. The two -200LRs are converted from a 777-200ER order previously placed with Boeing.

Three more 777 delivery slots are currently listed as unfilled on Boeing’s orders and deliveries website. However, Delta will not say if these too are being converted to -200LRs, adding that the slots “are options at this time”.

If exercised, these three aircraft will be delivered “in the 2008 to 2010 timeframe”, says Delta.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in February took delivery of the first 777-200LR. Air Canada is the North American launch customer for the type with 11 unfilled deliveries listed on Boeing’s website.

Boeing could not provide immediate comment. GE could not be immediately reached for comment.

Aahh.

I cannot WAIT to see these beautiful Boeing machines in the sky! I love Boeing design...I think the 747 is one of the most beautiful planes ever built, including the military ones! And the 707 is revolutionary and classic. And I think the 727 is underrated by many, because they are burnt out on the plane. I felt like I had been inside thousands of them over the years (intentional exaggeration there...:)

"Delta Air Lines becomes US launch customer for Boeing 777-200LR."

In Paris today a local businessman announced he would become the first French launch customer for the Airbus 380. "We intend to moor it on the Seine and make a hotel out of it."

Delta will likely use the 777-200LR on the JFK-BOM (New York-JFK to Mumbai, India) route.

DAL will likely use this sleek, smooth, long-distance wonder on round trips from ATL-JAX (Atlanta to Jacksonville)....

That is the data they used to decide they "couldn't make a profit" with the 747's in the early 70's....

Their management and strategic equipment planners are the worst in the industry... BAR NONE...
Even with a great airplane like this one!

I will be surprised if they ever get out of Chapter 11.

"Delta’s refurbished business and economy class products..."

The new 777-200LRs do not fall into this category. The route those planes will be elsewhere.

The B777 would look especially good in Pan-American Airways livery. Any chance they'll ever return?

Not likely for JFK-SYD (New York-JFK to Sydney). The great circle distance is 8646 nautical miles between these two cities, which is already close to the limit for the 777-200LR even in mostly still air.

Not likely for JFK-SYD (New York-JFK to Sydney).

But what about JFK-ATL-SYD?

I would hazard a guess that Delta will use them to replace 767s in their South America service.

Sorry that you're wrong and all...but the 772LR is the perfect airplane for Delta right now. In th regulated '70's the 747 was the wrong airplane when Delta could only fly it from Atlanta to Dallas. But now you will see an expansion of existing flights and new ones opened. I don't know why you're opposed to an American airline opening up new commercial paths with an American airplane, but I'll be happy to watch you eat your words.
