WASHINGTON — Just 55% of the Pentagon’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter fleet was mission capable as of March 2023, a disappointing statistic driven by factors like a lack of depot capacity, insufficient supply of spare parts and overreliance on contractors, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office. The watchdog’s assessment — published days after a Marine Corps F-35B went missing for over 24 hours in South Carolina — highlights a complaint frequently aired by government officials: prime contractor Lockheed Martin, along with its countless subcontractors, were given too much control over sustaining the stealth fighter, a situation...

New polling released after the GOP presidential debate shows an age gap when it comes to Ron DeSantis supporters. A Léger survey conducted Wednesday and Thursday in conjunction with the New York Post shows that while DeSantis has 9% support overall (52 points behind Donald Trump, but in second place nonetheless), there is an age gap. Voters 54 years old or younger are much less likely to back the Florida Governor’s 2024 bid for the Republican nomination than those 55 and up. Among voters 18 to 34 years of age, DeSantis’ 5% puts him behind Mike Pence’s 6% and in...

The other day our sister newspaper, the Gloucester County Times, reported on a raid at a fraternity house at Rowan University where — get ready for a shock — some college kids were drinking. About 100 of the kids were underage and will face charges. Believe it or not, that incident has its roots in the same problem that led to the controversy over the so-called "Bridge to Nowhere" in Alaska. That problem lies in the way the federal government distributes highway funding: poorly. It’s obvious in the case of the bridge that would have connected the city of Ketchikan,...

55 mph is So 70s: Voters Oppose Lowering National Speed Limit Monday, July 07, 2008 A proposal to conserve energy by reducing the nationwide speed limit to 55 miles-per-hour is strongly opposed by the nation’s voters. Voters continue to prefer solutions that lead to finding more energy rather than relying upon conservation efforts. Majorities support both drilling for oil in both offshore wells and in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 59% of voters oppose the lower speed limit and 34% support it. Democrats are fairly evenly divided on the proposal with...

Influential Republican senator, John Warner of Virginia, suggested on Thursday that Congress consider reimposing a national speed limit to save gasoline. Sen. John Warner, R-Va., asked Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman to investigate what speed limit would provide optimum gasoline efficiency given current technology. Warner said he wants to know if the administration might support efforts in Congress to require a lower speed limit. In 1974, Congress set a national 55 mph speed limit because of energy shortages caused by the Arab oil embargo. The speed limit was repealed in 1995 when crude oil dipped to $17 a barrel and gasoline...

There may be many important issues to be resolved on the ballot next Tuesday, but none holds more significance for California’s long-term well-being than Proposition 56. Despite the innocuous-sounding name, the “Budget Accountability Act,” its actual effect would be to eliminate the protections first offered by Proposition 13. Specifically, Proposition 56 would reduce the two-thirds legislative vote requirement to raise state taxes down to 55%. Just a cursory examination of the proposition’s supporters is enough to prove Aristotle’s Principle of Causation: “Things act according to their Nature.” Proponents of the change include the AARP, Health Access and unions that purport...
