I met a Native American school teacher in Oklahoma last month, and we had a fascinating discussion about religion. He told me that many Native Americans are abandoning Christianity, and are turning to the religions of their ancestors. In fact, Native American religions have become quite fashionable among many whites in the New Age movement. He also noted that many Indians consider white Christians to be worse than Muslims. He feels that American Indians were treated much worse, than Muslim nations have historically treated their Dhimmi minorities. He was angered by the fact that the US government had historically forced...

Move over, Fluffy and Fido. There's a new batch of pet names in town: "people" names! Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), the nation's largest and oldest provider of pet health insurance, scoured its database of more than 466,000 insured pets to find the most popular dog and cat names of 2008. Two Tacoma police officers shot and killed two dogs Wednesday morning on the East Side. Both officers were bitten in the incident and taken to a local hospital for treatment, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. The officers were leaving a call when they spotted two pit bulls attacking another dog in an alley near East 62nd Street and East McKinley Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. A woman had been walking the third dog, described as resembling a German shepherd, when the pit bulls, which had been running free, attacked, Fulghum said. The officers pulled over and tried to stopped the...

A WAR of ridicule on Islamic extremism is an excellent idea. Let's wage it. But when I was an editor, I would not have dreamed of publishing cartoons that depicted the prophet Mohammed as a suicide bomber. Would the violent response of Islamic zealots (and terrorists) to a Danish paper's doing this have tempted me, in the name of free speech and in anger, to reproduce the Danish caricatures, now widely available on the internet and reprinted by some newspapers? An equally resolute "no". Free speech becomes babble when exercised indiscriminately, even, or maybe especially, in Danish. Graffiti (counting the...

A Native American death row inmate in California with Oklahoma roots has had a stay of execution request denied. That means that barring a reprieve from a higher court or from California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clarence Ray Allen will die later this month. Allen, 75, says his mother is part Choctaw and his father is part Cherokee. He was born in Blair, Oklahoma. The 75-year-old is imprisoned for a series of crimes that resulted in the deaths of multiple people. In their appeal, Allen’s lawyers said their client is elderly and afflicted with health problems including diabetes, and that executing...
