After seeing teen star Sydney McLaughlin place 5th in her heat in the opening round of the women's 400-meter hurdles at the Olympic Games, many of the close to 1,000 people that jammed themselves into Union Catholic's gym to watch the race began to head for the exits. For some, the heat inside the gym was beginning to take its toll, but many others left feeling that the 17 year-old McLaughlin, a rising senior at Union Catholic, had probably come up short in her attempt to advance to the semifinal round at Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But not brothers...

Ryan Lochte is just being Ryan Lochte, even amid an international olypmic scandal.

While his US swimming friends Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Jimmy Feigen are being detained in Rio to answer questions about Sunday’s apparently faux armed robbery, the most famous — make that infamous — swimmer of the bunch has been devoting his time to much less serious tasks since he escaped to the States.

How Ryan Lochte turned a drunken, frat-boy night into an international mess Yeah, it’s come to this: The story of the Olympics, a likely fake claim of robbery at the end of a drunken night of debauchery turned into global story courtesy of a publicity-mad swimmer-turned-reality-TV-star who, unlike his three buddies – teammates Jimmy Feigen, Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz – is home safe in the United States. This is likely bad news for Ryan Lochte, who appears to have found his three compatriots throwing him under the bus to authorities. At least two of the swimmers are at the...

US swimmers Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz have told police that they fabricated claims that they and their Olympic teammate Ryan Lochte were robbed at a gas station on Sunday. The sudden admission came as video was released in which the men can be seen running to and from the bathroom, spending over 10 minutes at the gas station a little after 6am in the morning. Sources have confirmed to DailyMail.com that Lochte and the group destroyed a gas station door and refused to pay for the damage until a security guard demanded they hand over money.

Brazilian police say Ryan Lochte and three other swimmers who claimed they were robbed had in fact destroyed a gas station toilet and refused to pay for the damage until a security guard waved a gun at them, DailyMail.com can disclose. A source with knowledge of the investigation said the four handed over money after the guard at the gas station insisted they pay. The version of events emerged as police in Rio prepared to quiz the taxi driver who picked up the four after they left a nightclub and resume questioning the three swimmers still in Brazil.

The swimmers, who were with Lochte during the alleged robbery, were taken off the plane for questioning, the newspaper said. Lochte, 32, one of the most...

a golden oldie of Usain Bolt from 2012

On the evening of Sunday, August 14, 2016, famed Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt won gold in a characteristically dynamic and seemingly effortless 100-meter performance at his third consecutive Olympics, this time in Rio de Janeiro, making him the first athlete to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 100-meter dash.Bolt’s rocketry on this celebrated night follows equally impressive performances in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012. There is little doubt as to why Bolt is easily regarded as the world’s fastest man. However, perhaps not as readily in the spotlight is notice of Bolt’s deep Catholic faith. In...

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres defended herself on Tuesday after some claimed that a humorous Usain Bolt tweet sent out from her social media accounts a day earlier was racist. *snip* DeGeneres’ popular Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts often feature funny images that have been altered to include her. On Monday, her accounts sent out a picture of her riding on Bolt’s back during Sunday’s 100 meter semifinal with the suggestion she’d like to use the Jamaican sprinter’s word-class speed to get her errands done faster.

Four years ago, Russia's Ilya Zakharov won gold in the men's 3m springboard. He looked fantastic back then. Fast-forward to 2016, with Zakharov competing in the semifinal for the same event. This time, everything fell apart for him. His knees buckled mid-air, causing him to belly flop into the water. He scored zero points, which put a dent into his total score -- 555.90 back in 2012, but 345.60 in Rio -- and placed him in last place. The fact that he even made it to the semis is pretty noteworthy; during the preliminary round, Zakharov hit the board on...

Modesty and Beach Volleyball Msgr. Charles Pope • August 14, 2016 • One of the less edifying aspects of the Summer Olympics in Rio is the attire of the women’s beach volleyball players from Western countries. Most of the women wear a tiny bikini with the bottom being especially tiny. (I do not show a picture here because I deem it immodest to do so. Instead, I show a picture of some of the men, whose attire I mention below.) Embed from Getty Images Frankly, playing volleyball in a tiny bikini seems quite unnecessary. I would argue that it...
