Shaunae Miller dived across the finish line to deny Allyson Felix a fifth Olympic gold Monday, in a thrilling women's 400-meter final at Rio 2016.

Bahamas-born Miller led going into the final straight and plunged over the line to beat Felix, the world champion, into second place, ahead of Jamaica's Shericka Jackson in third.

Cheap shot, by the winner. At least, to me.

To FALL across the finish line in order to project one's self across the line?

Nope. To my sense of fairness, that's a cheap ripoff.

Example: "My arm was longer than hers, so I win!"

Too many nits to pick. Eh. It's decided, so screw it. :)

I agree is tarnishes the running race. Yet, cyclists lunge across the finish line and baseball players slide into first base to beat the throw. Plus, swimmer go for miles underwater after making a turn before swimming again.

“Example: “My arm was longer than hers, so I win.”

And Yao Ming is 7’ 6” and I’m not.

He played in the NBA.

I did not.

If you caught the up close and personal interview with Felix she was rambling on about her meeting with Michelle Obama and how her grandma was just wowed ......

I think she was jinxed. Deservedly so.

That’s a perfectly legit win. She got her torso across the finish line first. That’s whole reason people lean at the tape. Just because she wanted it more and dove across the finish line doesn’t mean she cheated. That’s like saying sliding into home plate is cheating because you’re supposed to run across.

Good comparison.

Tarnishing the sport is the third Jamaican running for Bahrain because he was slower than Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake. Athletes should represent their countries, not just themselves.

Agree. Totally legit. Americans have also won races by diving for the line.

Yep. Rules must be changed.

Must still be standing when crossing the finish line.

Cheap shot for sure.

She self-propelled herself faster than the other runners in a race to be first across the finish line. What is the real complaint here? It’s not like she used rocketry to win. She should be punished for technique?

It’s no different than when the American high jumper went over the bar backwards and won.
The Soviets were apoplectic!
But there was no rule against it, and now it’s the standard way for all high jumpers!...

I agree that an Olympic runner should not be able to win a foot race by diving over the finish line, especially when the ‘diver’s’ entire body is not airborne as it crosses.

Miller was leading the race before she stumbled and did the dive...There was no advantage to diving, it actually slows you down, it’s faster to continue to run through the line and lean. The “dive” caused Miller to decelerate making the race closer. No need to make it illegal, it’s bad technique caused by desperation.

Agree. Cheap, sleazy ‘win’. Sliding into a base has been part of baseball for decades. Now she says it was an accident. Watch the tape, absolutely intentional. My sons says it is a valid way to win and is taught in track. More’s the pity that ‘by any means necessary’ now applies to sports.
