Doonesbury has been around for more than 30 years and, carried in over 600 papers, maintains its popularity. I never cared for it. For one thing, it rarely seemed even mildly amusing. The layoffs, which is five percent of its work force, are part of a restructuring plan after last summer's acquisition of Indianapolis-based Lilly Industries Inc. The company employs 6,500 workers. Valspar also said it will partially close four plants. Shares of Valspar were up 18 cents to close at $37.13 in trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Arab League Calls for International Observers & War Crimes Tribunal (IsraelNationalNews.com) Arab League ministers met in Cairo and once again issued a statement to the international community "to exhibit responsibility and protect the Palestinian people," calling for the deployment of an international observer force in Israel. Studies of corn that is genetically engineered to produce its own insect killer found that the crop is having virtually no impact on monarch butterflies that live in farm fields. The scientists say that the real danger to the butterflies may be the spraying of weed killers and insecticides, not the growing of the gene-altered corn.
