What has the Bush administration got against Israel? At every turn, regardless of what Israel has done to defend itself against intensifying Palestinian terrorism, Secretary of State Colin Powell, or one of his underlings, has been quick to launch a verbal broadside against the Jewish state. Whether it is the use of economic sanctions against the Palestinian Authority, the pinpoint targeting of wanted terrorists planning attacks, or even the demolition of buildings used to carry out armed assaults against soldiers and civilians, Israel, it seems, can do nothing right in Powell's eyes. Indeed, hardly a month seems to pass without ...

Klamath farmers brace for new skirmish over water 08/01/01 MICHAEL MILSTEIN Two Oregon irrigation districts that operate dams on the east side of the Klamath Basin have cut off water to a shallow northern California lake that holds endangered suckers, setting up a new face-off in the Klamath Basin's tense struggle for water. The irrigation districts say they have already delivered enough water for the protected fish and must keep the rest in reservoirs for farmers to use if the current drought continues into next year. But federal officials maintain the districts must send more water downstream to comply with ...

Middle East foes target leaders for assassination By ROSS DUNN JERUSALEM Thursday 2 August 2001 The undeclared war between Israelis and Palestinians reached an new level of intensity yesterday as both sides embarked on campaigns to assassinate the political leaders of their enemies. Israel's army has formalised a strategic decision to kill top Palestinian militant leaders, calling them the "snake heads of terrorism". The decision ignores a flurry of international criticism and the danger of provoking revenge attacks. The United States, Britain and Russia have warned that such actions would only spark more violence. US State Department spokesman Charles ...

First of all, let me say for those who don't know me that I am a 40-year-old female, single mother of a home-schooled eight-year-old (and a 20-year-old who was kidnapped by his father when he was three, and who lives in Texas--but that's another story). I work for a major hospital in the Bay Area, in a very sensitive position. I was investivated for sexual harrassment yesterday afternoon (from 4:00pm - 7:00pm), although interviews were conducted throughout the day under the guise of establishing whether our department needed diversity training. I was the last one to be "interviewed/investigated", and at ...

Scientists say they found organisms on atmosphere’s edge; debate focuses on whether they’re terrestrial or alien LONDON, July 31 — An international team of researchers said on Tuesday they have found what could be evidence of life beyond our planet — clumps of bacteria in Earth’s upper atmosphere. THE ORGANISMS are similar to bacteria on Earth, but the scientists said the living cells found in samples of air from the edge of the planet’s atmosphere are too far away to have come from Earth. “There is now unambiguous evidence for the presence of clumps of living cells in air ...

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The bad publicity generated by his relationship to missing former government intern Chandra Levy has not yet hurt the ability of Democratic Congressman Gary Condit to raise campaign funds, one of the most significant advantages of incumbency. Reports filed with the Federal Election Commission this week indicate the seven-term California lawmaker raised $185,878 in the period between January 1 to June 30 of this year. After spending $131,453 in the same period -- including a $10,000 contribution to the Chandra Levy reward fund -- he was left with $315,667 cash on hand. These figures are similar to ...

'RAMMIN' PARTIES' WORRY COPS Cops are worried that 'Rammin' Parties', which began with California youth, will spread across the nation via the internet There's a new game in town and the ante is pretty steep. Apparently bored with video games, the internet, drugs, raves and yes, even foolin' around with members of the opposite sex, gangs of suburban youths have formed what they're calling, "Rammin' Parties". Bonus points The object of this "game" according to the Pasadena police department, is to find a vehicle sitting at a stop light, approach it from the rear with the headlights out at speeds ...

Today I heard Rush lament the fact that 4 firefighters were killed (somewhere out West) partly because the EPA wouldn't allow water form nearby lakes to be used to fight the fire. Apparently some exotic three toed, frog humping, snail darter calls these waters home. Well, since the environmental socialists support cloning, hasn’t anyone considered telling these wacko’s that they should clone these rare species they love so much? Hell, cloning has worked for sheep. And as far as I'm concerned, former Rep. Bill Richardson bares an eerie resemblance to Lew Costello. I say clone the critters and free the ...

AP National Ga. Inmate Said Killed Over Secret SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- Jail inmates strangled a fellow prisoner because they feared he would expose their plan to escape by chiseling through a wall, authorities said. Michael Kelly Deal, 54, a former police officer who was in jail on a charge of failing to pay child support, was found hanging by a bedsheet in his cell July 24. Chatham County authorities initially believed Deal committed suicide, but investigators now believe he was strangled with a bandage outside his cell, then dragged inside and strung up, Sheriff Al St. Lawrence said. Seven ...

WASHINGTON, Aug 1 (Reuters) - A House committee on Wednesday rejected the Bush administration's proposal to cut the U.S. B-1 bomber fleet and sought to force Pentagon officials to provide more justification for the move. On a 33-26 vote, the House Armed Services Committee endorsed an amendment to a fiscal 2002 defense spending authorization bill that would prevent any reductions or transfers of the bomber fleet until a series of reports and justifications are provided to Congress. The Air Force has proposed cutting the B-1 bomber fleet to 60 planes from the current 93 for a savings of $165 million ...

Are foes underestimating Posthumus? By Thomas Bray / The Detroit News There is good news and bad news for Dick Posthumus. The bad news is that even the lieutenant governor's friends say he faces up an uphill battle to succeed three-term Gov. John Engler. The good news is that his foes may be underestimating him. It has been a common mistake over the years. The apple-cheeked, 51-year-old son of a dairy farmer from western Michigan is an unassuming, modest man who speaks softly and has never been to known to brandish a big stick. And then there is that ...

What is Salvation and How does one get it? And Salvation from What Danger(s)? This is an open-ended question. I have my own opinions, but I'd like to see others' ideas. I'm especially interested in opinions from different Christian groups, but if someone from a totally different religion (e.g., Islam) has their religion's answer to the question, I'd like to read it.

Man had helped douse blaze at church, officials say By Elizabeth Yoste Clarion-Ledger Staff Writer One of the first to fight the blaze that destroyed Hinds Independent Methodist Church last week has been charged with setting the fire. Raymond volunteer firefighter Gary LaShawn McGee, 27, of 1612 King Woods Circle in Jackson, was arrested Tuesday. He is charged with arson. Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin said evidence at the scene "led to the development of him as a suspect in the case." The Associated Press reported McGee was linked to the crime by a store videotape that showed him buying ...

LINK TO THREAD NO. 1 In summary, Bill Maher will be sitting in on KABC radio in Los Angeles for Doug McIntyre on Monday and Tuesday from 9 to midnight. We need to flood the station with calls, make sure we are pleasant with the screener to get on the air and then absolutely let Maher have it. It needs to be bad radio for those 6 hours. We will have a thread going those nights to inform you of the topics so those who can't hear can still call in and know the subject being discussed. From the ...

Crisis de-energizes campaign donations State legislators, facing a political risk, report taking less money from energy firms in first half of the year. August 1, 2001 By HANH KIM QUACHand KIMBERLY KINDYThe Orange County Register SACRAMENTO Members of the Legislature at the epicenter of California's energy crisis appeared to have accepted less money from the energy industry since January than they did during the first six months of last year, according to reports filed Tuesday with the secretary of state. The downturn in campaign fund raising became distinct once the energy crisis heated up this year, with some lawmakers ...

Values LiteThe Dems build on Clinton. By NR EditorsAugust 20, 2001 issue The presidential election of 2000 was a stark demonstration of neoconservative author Ben Wattenberg's proposition that "values matter most." Among whites (81 percent of the electorate), regular churchgoers backed Bush and more secular voters Gore. Bush won the culturally conservative states, Gore the culturally liberal ones. Because the country's political divisions so closely track its cultural ones, values were the subtext of the election. For the same reason, they were not its text. Gore and Bush talked about education and Social Security. They could be confident ...

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Robert Torricelli claims he wants to put hackers who disrupt school computers in prison. "Computer hackers who prey upon unsuspecting schools, striking fear in the hearts of entire communities with threats of violence, cannot go unpunished," the New Jersey Democrat said this week. But educators, programmers and civil libertarians say Torricelli's recently-introduced School Website Protection Act of 2001 does more than place wrongdoers behind bars. They say the bill is worded so vaguely it would turn commonplace activities into federal crimes to be investigated by the U.S. Secret Service. "I think the bill misses the mark," says ...
