Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov says 200,000 soldiers are absent without official leave — AWOL — and that 2 million are "wanted" for avoiding military service. "I don't want to be a populist — I want to be a realist," Fedorov said. "The Ministry of Defense is coming into my hands with a [$6.9 billion] shortfall, 2 million Ukrainians who are wanted and 200,000 who are AWOL," Fedorov said Wednesday in an address to Parliament. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Fedorov, 34, at the start of the year. The former head of Ukraine's digital transformation policies is credited with spearheading the...

Customs and Border Protection agents began an immigration enforcement operation Saturday in Charlotte. Leaders of North Carolina's largest city have said the federal operation is causing fear and uncertainty. Charlotte real estate agent Tabatha Andonian has been tracking federal agent sightings and sharing information with the city's Latino community. “Right now, I’m just driving around to see if I spot any vehicles that are ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), seeing if they have out-of-state plates,” she said.

Oregon election officials are set to begin removing hundreds of thousands of inactive voters from the state’s registration rolls, a move that comes after years of inaction, mounting public pressure, and lawsuits filed against the state in recent months. Oregon's Democratic Secretary of State Tobias Read, in a press release Friday, outlined two new directives he said will "restart" the "routine cleanup of outdated, inactive voter registration records" in accordance with state law to address the roughly 800,000 inactive voter records that are being maintained by election officials. The first directive orders counties to immediately cancel long-inactive voter registrations that...

At first blush, Trump’s insistence on Greenland sounds outlandish, but recall over 20 yrs ago I began warning of foreigners aggressively claiming Arctic resources and waterways - while America slept. Russia was flagging underseas energy sources, our inventory of icebreakers dwindled to ONE reliable (against DOZENS of foreign-flagged vessels), and DC ignored my concerns of countries hogging new transportation routes that would screw us over. In explaining Alaska’s strategic location (30% of which is in the #Arctic) I was mocked for ringing the warning bells… but really I was just before my time. So now that attention is finally paid,...

China has become one of the closest and most important countries to Iran - but is now refraining from providing it with critical support. • Tehran expected expanded economic and political support, but Beijing is content with general and meaningless statements. • Chinese social media joked and criticized Iran: "Expect China to pay the price instead." Assaf Rosenzweig. N12 Published:01.14.26. Iran is in the midst of its most serious crisis in recent decades, and against the backdrop of the US and Israel's threats of attack, Tehran is trying to gather support from countries and powers close to it. Military beat: DEI Spurred US Recruitment CrisisThe “racist ideology of diversity, equity and inclusion” spurred a US military “recruitment crisis” by driving away thousands of white men, conclude Mike Gallagher & Kevin Wallsten at The Wall Street Journal. Brass under President Joe Biden worked “to make our military less white”; the result: “Between 2013 and 2023, annual male enlistments in the Army fell 35%”; from 2018 to ’23, “white Army recruits dropped from 44,042 to 25,070. No other groups saw such steep declines.” Happily, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s “reset,” scrapping DEI, “is working, with the Pentagon announcing its ‘best recruiting...

The president of Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota on Tuesday called for the immediate release of tribal members who were detained at a homeless encampment by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minnesota last week. Three of the four Oglala Sioux Tribe members who were arrested in Minneapolis on Friday have been transferred to an ICE facility at Fort Snelling, President Frank Star Comes Out said in a statement released with a memorandum sent to federal immigration authorities. “The Oglala Sioux Tribe’s memorandum makes clear that ‘tribal citizens are not aliens’ and are ‘categorically outside immigration jurisdiction,’” Star Comes...

"She is nearly 100 feet longer than any other ship in the world except her sister — and her tonnage of 45,000 is 13,000 in excess of that of the biggest of rival liners. Her engines — 50,000 horsepower — are both turbine and reciprocating, are expected practically to eliminate vibration. "She has accommodations for 5,000 passengers. She cost $7,500,000. The Titanic is not a speed marvel — she makes but 21 knots as against the Mauretania’s 25 — but she is the last word in the way of comfort and luxury in trans-Atlantic travel."

John Mellencamp has no interest in being a "(Expletive) clown" for his fans. During an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the singer explained why he recoiled from playing arena and amphitheater-sized shows in recent years. “I got tired of going on tour and being a cheerleader, which is what I was,” Mellencamp admitted. “’Let's do a rounding hit of 'Small Town!' ‘I was born…’ You know, and everybody’d stand up and sing. I was playing to 20,000 people and everybody was drunk and I was just kind of the cheerleader.” “I just thought, I'm here to be a...

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said Greenlanders could vote to join Russia if US President Donald Trump did not move quickly to secure the Arctic island, Interfax reported on Monday. “Trump needs to hurry. According to unverified information, in a few days there could be a sudden referendum, at which the entire 55,000-strong Greenland could vote to join Russia,” Interfax reported, quoting Medvedev, a former Russian president. “And then that’s it. No new little stars on the (US) flag.” Trump has revived his push for the United States to take control of Greenland. The Arctic island’s Prime Minister...

One-third of students think Reform UK politicians should be barred from speaking on university campuses, according to a survey of student attitudes towards free speech that organisers described as “contradictory” and confusing. While 69% of students told the Higher Education Policy Institute (Hepi) survey that universities should “never limit free speech”, similar numbers also supported speaking bans on specific political parties. Announcing its findings, the institute said: “The results show students’ views on free issues tend to be nuanced and they sometimes seem contradictory. In particular, while the principle of free speech has stronger support from students than in the...

I was wondering if we might see a push from the Stephen Miller faction in the Trump administration to take the Minneapolis ICE shooting one step further and criminally charge Renee Nicole Good’s wife for inciting the shooting. That would be the classic Miller move, and one that goes a step further than the typical Trump DOJ pattern of lawfare against personal and policy enemies of the president. There’s more than a fig leaf of justification for such charges, as the wife seems to have gotten Good involved in ICE Watch as well as yelling “Drive, baby, drive” just before...
