Erythritol, a commonly used sugar substitute often marketed as "healthy," may impair blood vessel health by disrupting the brain's ability to produce a critical compound, according to new research. Erythritol is a low-calorie sugar substitute found in many sugar-free products, including energy drinks, snack foods and protein bars. Like other sugar alcohols, erythritol is popular because it does not affect blood glucose and insulin levels as much as sugar. However, previous research links consumption of erythritol to a higher risk of adverse cardiac events, including stroke. In a new study, researchers treated human cerebral microvascular endothelial cells—cells from the tiny...

New research suggests that lycopene, which gives fruits like tomatoes and watermelons their bright red color, supports healthy liver functioning and may help prevent weight gain. Lycopene is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory compound that is naturally produced by some plants. It is also available as a dietary supplement. The researchers' interest in studying the impacts of tomato consumption and lycopene on obesity was sparked by a previous study that showed dietary estrogen supplements prevented zebrafish from becoming obese despite being overfed. Since lycopene and other compounds found in tomatoes affect some of the same chemical pathways as estrogen, the scientists wondered...

Despite the ‘album era’ fast approaching its approximate 60th anniversary, the lauded rock heritage that deified stadium monsters such as Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones as the paragons of musical achievement and authentic expression still looms over a pop climate that’s undergone seismic creative and social shifts across the last half-century. It won’t be too long before the cultural totems that still command such collective veneration, rock and roll, Woodstock, and AOR, will all cease to be living memories sooner than you think. With Rolling Stone‘s ‘rockist’ residue still colouring many muso’s quality metrics and indication of a healthy...

Pakistani use of PL-15Es against Indian fighters opens up a new vector for intelligence exploitation on one of China's most threatening missiles. ================================================================= The largely intact rear section and other parts of a Chinese-made PL-15E active-radar-guided air-to-air missile came down in India during a battle in the skies along the country’s border with Pakistan earlier this week. While many details about the aerial confrontation between the two countries remain murky, it marked the first known combat use of any version of the PL-15. Recovery of any parts of what is one of China’s most modern air-to-air missiles could be of...

Throughout the sprawling saga of human history, every period has proclaimed its moment as the defining pivot, crafting narratives of grandeur and crisis that cast it as the fulcrum of destiny. From the marble-clad majesty of Ancient Rome to the nuclear-shadowed tensions of the Cold War, each age believed its challenges were unparalleled, shaping the course of civilization. Yet, as we stand in this era, confronting a convergence of existential threats—artificial intelligence (AI) poised to redefine the essence of humanity, nuclear arsenals capable of annihilating billions, pandemics that exploit global connectivity, and the corrosive spread of socialist propaganda promoting disgusting...

Back in 2021, "Dune: Part One" released to no small amount of acclaim. Really, the accolades just kept coming — six wins at the Oscars (of 10 nominations), and a long laundry list of other awards. A few years later, a sequel arrived with a similar level of aplomb — a ton of awards and nominations, in other words. And all of that is aside from the general level of popularity that both movies have won from legions of fans. That's all well and good, and as a movie, it's hard to deny that Denis Villeneuve's works are masterclasses in...

Some men just want to go Hogg-wild. Democratic National Committee vice chair David Hogg bashed his own party for being too hostile toward men, arguing it is a major factor Dems’ massive defeat in the 2024 election. “What I think happened last election is younger men — they would rather vote for somebody who they don’t completely agree with, they don’t feel judged by,” Hogg told “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday, “than somebody who they do agree with, that they feel like they have to walk on eggshells around constantly because they’re going to be judged or ostracized or...
