Chinese hackers tried to break into the cellphones of former President Donald Trump and GOP vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance by compromising US telecommunications systems, a shocking breach revealed 11 days before the US election. The sophisticated hacking campaign targeted Verizon and may have gained access to data or messages sent by Trump, 78, and Vance, 40. The hack was first reported Friday by the New York Times. Trump and Vance were only informed of the situation this week, though it remains unclear how many communications — encrypted or unencrypted — were obtained or may be still accessible by...

A federal judge has turned away allegations that billionaire Elon Musk violated the law when he started giving $1 million away to registered voters. California resident Aaron Greenspan in a lawsuit filed over the summer accused Musk of violating state laws and the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. In a recent emergency motion, Greenspan, who founded the company PlainSite, said Musk’s newly announced million-dollar giveaways to voters in swing states violated federal law that prohibits paying or offering to pay people to either register to vote or vote.

A House committee revealed Friday that the Pentagon, other US agencies and the European Union — in addition to the State Department — have funded a for-profit “fact-checking” firm accused of suppressing The Post. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) wrote a letter to the firm, NewsGuard, demanding more details about the public-private collaboration that led last year to the State Department being sued by conservative outlets that were labeled more “risky” than their liberal counterparts..... The Oversight panel in June opened its investigation into NewsGuard’s apparent participation in a government-funded “censorship campaign” to allegedly discredit and even demonetize...

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump expressed support for Israel’s offensives against Hamas and Hezbollah in a recent call with the country’s prime minister — a position that could complicate his campaign’s outreach to Arab Americans claiming he opposes the war. Trump told Benjamin Netanyahu in one call this month, “Do what you have to do,” according to six people familiar with the conversation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive and confidential information. Trump has said publicly that the two have spoken at least twice in October, with one call as recently as Oct. 19. “He didn’t...

An AI was asked to create images of what Europeans think the average American from different states looks like - and the results are shocking. According to the tech, Europeans hold racist and sexist stereotypes about Americans, and generally see people from the US as gluttonous, overweight consumers who only eat McDonalds. That belief churned out a series of startling images - only of women - that presents how Americans are seen. In the bot's view, only Florida and Texas have attractive women. The images presented to represent those states were of scantily-clad blonde beauties. The other states were summed...

Do not argue with or try to reason with a Black male Trump supporter. He is lost. He does not want to be found. And he is beyond redemption. In the classic 1968 version of “Planet of the Apes,” Cornelius quoted the sacred scrolls by noting, “Beware the beast man, for he is the devil's pawn …. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him. Drive him back into his [treasonous] lair, for he is the harbinger of [political] death.” And in one of his powerful speeches, the...

Situated between Poland and Lithuania, both members of the European Union and NATO, Kaliningrad Oblast is a Russian exclave on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea, as well as the westernmost region of the Russian Federation.Tactically, in the event of conflict, Russia could form a land bridge from Belarus to the Kaliningrad exclave along the so-called Suwałki Gap, severing the Baltic states, including Lithuania, from other members of the Atlantic Alliance. In this scenario, troops stationed in Lithuania as part of a German-led NATO brigade would be surrounded and cut off from Central Europe. In addition, the deployment of...

U.S. — With the presidential election less than two weeks away, top Democrats warned the American people that it could be some time before we know who the winner is because it may take at least four years to count all of the ballots. Though other, far less-developed countries have been able to count all ballots by hand in much shorter periods of time, Democrats stressed the very real likelihood that counting all the ballots in swing states would probably last until the 2028 presidential election. "You just can't rush this type of thing," said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer....

Half the country sees former President Donald Trump as a fascist, amplifying concerns raised in recent days by Vice President Kamala Harris and past members of Trump's own administration. Far fewer in a new ABC News/Ipsos poll level the same charge against Harris. Nearly two-thirds also say Trump often departs from the truth, again more than say so about Harris. But Harris gets more criticism than Trump for pandering for votes by promoting policies she doesn't intend to carry out -- underscoring challenges for both candidates as the fur flies in their increasingly heated presidential race. Responding to one of...

Short on the heels of another major refinery closure, Valero signaled it is considering closing its two California refineries that produce over 14% of the state’s gasoline. Refinery closures already have the state importing 8% of its gasoline supply, which means the state could soon have to significantly increase its imports of refined products such as gasoline, on top of its existing reliance on the Middle East and South America for the majority of its crude oil. Valero announced its profit is down significantly due to very low margins from its refinery business, prompting a question during its earning call...
