A WPI research team has improved iron-based alkaline batteries by adding silicate, preventing hydrogen gas formation during charging. The world is swiftly shifting toward renewable energy, but challenges remain. Solar power is unavailable at night, and wind energy fluctuates unpredictably. To address these gaps, new technologies are needed to store excess energy from the grid when production is high and release it during times of shortage. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries play a crucial role in everyday life, powering devices from smartphones to electric vehicles. However, they rely on limited resources like lithium, nickel, and cobalt, raising concerns about sustainability and cost....

Waking up to a good hearty laugh, millions of American watched gleefully as former President Trump reached out of a McDonald’s drive-thru window to hand a customer their order. It pleased us not because it was, as the Kamala campaign declared, a stunt. Rather it was, Trump being Trump, but far beyond that it was Trump being us.

Updated, 10 PM, 10/22/24 Good evening, blog mates. Headline: Rurals matter. Especially when they are turning out 3.5 points above their registration and producing landslide ballot wins (58-20) over the Ds. Consider that Other 22 percent will mostly go to Trump, too, and maybe we should be talking about the GOP firewall in the rurals this cycle. It’s up to 16,500 out of only 44,000 ballots cast -- and that's without allocating the indies. R statewide lead: Almost 14,000 Clark D firewall: 5,000 Washoe D advantage: -2,200 Total voters: 320,000, or 16 percent of registered voters. Could be approaching a...

During an interview with Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” released on Tuesday, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm blamed the “hiccup” in electric vehicle demand on “a lot of talking down of electric vehicles,” and predicted that after the election, there will be “more positivity” around EVs. Host Michael Kosta asked, “It feels like electric — sorry to be the bummer — it feels like EV has slowed a little bit. What are some of the challenges you’re facing?”

23 October 2024 Wednesday of week 29 in Ordinary Time San Juan Capistrano Mission, CA Readings at MassLiturgical Colour: Green. Year: B(II).First readingEphesians 3:2-12The pagans now share the same inheritanceYou have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery, as I have just described it very shortly. If you read my word you will have some idea of the depths that I see in the mystery of Christ. This that has now been revealed through...

God is only mentioned once. Kamala is mentioned several times. When Kamala isn’t falsely accusing the Jewish State of “genocide”, her campaign is sending out her husband, Doug Emhoff, who has no connection to Judaism, to try to ‘Jewface’ Jewish voters. The result seems to be some sort of bizarre new religion built around Kamala. The Democrats are hyping “Kamala Shabbat” dinners in which everyone sits around and discusses her (hopefully non-plagiarized) book. Here’s an example of a Kamala Shabbat dinner which instead of marking the time when G-d created the world in seven days and took the Jews out...

“It's also been an imperative for us to try to make sure that this conflict doesn't spread." US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Israel not to escalate its conflict with Tehran and the Iranian proxy group Hezbollah as it continues to respond militarily to attacks from both entities. “It's also been an imperative for us to try to make sure that this conflict doesn't spread. We are resolute in our defense of Israel when it comes to attacks it's receiving from Iran, from Iran's proxies,” Blinken told reporters on Wednesday morning before departing Tel Aviv for Saudi Arabia. “We...

The futures of Elon Musk, SpaceX, Starlink, Tesla, and the Second Amendment are inexorably linked to the future of the United States of America. The world watched in amazement and awe as the SpaceX Starship performed its fifth test flight. The Starship is made mostly of stainless steel. Starship is the largest spaceship and rocket system ever built. It is designed to take 100-200 tons into orbit at a time. The booster (first stage) is about 233 feet tall. The cost to take a kilogram to orbit before SpaceX was about $11,000 to $13,000 per kilogram, or about $5000 to $6000...

Let’s separate the facts from the fiction with respect to the U.S. Democrat party and communism as dictated by the philosophy of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. The bible for the political and economic ideology known as communism is the Manifesto of the Communist Party (the “Communist Manifesto”), written by Marx and Engels in 1848. In the Communist Manifesto, Marx and Engels set forth their philosophy that calls for the organization of the proletariat into a class, which then overthrows the bourgeois, secures political power, and imposes a communist system of government based on Marxist principles. An examination of the...

North Korea has sent 3,000 troops to Russia to support its war against Ukraine, South Korean lawmakers said on Wednesday after being briefed by the national intelligence agency, an estimate that is twice the previous figure. Pyongyang had promised to provide a total of about 10,000 troops, whose deployment was expected to be completed by December, the lawmakers told journalists. The latest numbers came after Seoul's National Intelligence Service said on Friday the North had sent some 1,500 special forces to Russia by ship. "Signs of troops being trained inside North Korea were detected in September and October," Park Sun-won,...

A video recently emerged showing several cows lying dead on roadsides in California’s Central Valley amid an avian influenza outbreak across the U.S., sparking biosafety concerns. The dead cows were close together with swarms of flies buzzing around them, video shows. Dr. Crystal Heath, a veterinary doctor with the Berkeley, California-based nonprofit Our Honor, took the video Oct. 8 and shared it on Twitter on Oct. 17. The dead livestock were in front of Mendonsa Farms and Land O’Lakes Borges Dairy, both in Tulare County, Heath said. There were no visible warning signs of potential biosafety risk that the exposed...

World War III is well underway, both conventional wars, as in NATO versus Russia via Ukraine, and the US playing both sides of a battle between Israel and Iran and their proxies. There is also a psychological war underway. This is the war against the First Amendment in America and the longstanding Western concept of freedom of speech in many other countries. Misinformation and disinformation are the new enemies, concepts known only in the eyes of the beholder. One man’s disinformation is another man’s speaking truth to power. Who is the referee? We, the people, or the administrative state? This...

Dozens of Honolulu police officers piled into a recent city council meeting to block a proposed $1.5million payout to the widow of a 'Zulu prince' who was shot dead by a cop. Lindani Myeni, who was a member of the Zulu tribe and a descendant of Zulu royalty, was fatally shot on April 14, 2021 following a struggle with police officers outside a vacation rental in the city's Nuuanu neighborhood, which he was accused of entering without permission. The 29-year-old's widow, Lindsay, filed a wrongful death suit in the aftermath, arguing that police failed to identify themselves when they pointed...

Victory is such a glorious word. Anybody who has ever felt victorious knows exactly what I mean. Those of us who have been lucky enough to grasp it also know that it does not last. It arrives, fills the soul with a warm sensation of contentment and gratitude, and vanishes almost as quickly as it appeared. Once the effervescence of victory blows away, those who felt its touch speak of it with reverence. The word is pronounced more slowly and with more care as the passage of time pushes it deeper into our memories. I hope President Trump is re-elected...

– U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today led a letter signed by 30 of his Senate Republican colleagues demanding a full accounting of actions taken by a senior Pentagon official who has close links to the Iranian government. Ariane Tabatabai, the chief of staff to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict, was reportedly engaged in an Iranian government-linked initiative to bolster the Iranian government’s image and reinforce Tehran’s national security views. Leaked emails show Tabatabai asking the Iranian government for input on her speaking engagements and...

Mole DayCelebrated annually on October 23 from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m., Mole Day commemorates "Avogadro's Number": 6.02 x 1023. This number--called a mole--is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. Mole Day typically falls during National Chemistry Week.https://www.acs.org/education/students/highschool/chemistryclubs/mole-day.htmlNational Chemistry WeekIn 1986, George Pimentel, then ACS president, had an idea to better educate the public about the crucial role of chemistry in everyday life. ACS organized its first official National Chemistry Day on Nov. 6, 1987. By 1989, the ACS Board had approved National Chemistry Day, and it became an annual celebration, held every year in late October. In 1993, it...

The aftermath of the 2023 Supreme Court ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard (SFFA) has put a spotlight on the capriciousness of admissions practices at selective colleges. In SFFA, the Supreme Court ruled that race-based admissions violate the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. After immense consternation about the impact of the ruling, dire warnings, and earnest discussion about how colleges should respond, the truth is that we have limited insight into what’s changed, how colleges are actually responding, or whether they’re even abiding by the law. Here’s what we do know: At...
