Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven,
How Blessed,
How Glorious,
How Wonderful,
Is Your Most Holy Name!
How Mighty and Perfect is Your Word,
And Your Promise,
Which You have allowed us a glimpse into Your Perfect Will!
You, The Eternal,
The Omnipotent,
The Immortal,
Not Bound By Time or Space,
because You Created it,
Your Ways are not our ways,
And yet we hunger and thirst for You,
like a thirsty little deer panting in the forest,
seeking a bubbling spring for a fresh sip of water!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Peter was a boy I dated briefly in High School. He was Syrian, and told me that his grandfather had been a Sheikh, and he had the regalia to prove it. Sure enough, during a visit to his home, his mother proudly displayed the ceremonial daggers and other symbols of their family's rank. It was pretty exotic for a Boston Baby Boomer.

Peter and his family were going to church and invited me to come along. It was in an old brick building in a tough section of Boston, but, inside the church it was as if you had been transported to a palace in the Arabian Nights. Candles glittered everywhere on gold-encrusted icons, incense wafted up through a huge chandelier, and an acapella choir chanted in Arabic. There where no pews, and everybody just stood...for hours. The long standing, heavy incense, and beautiful music made me feel very "spiritual".

Many years later, the church was able to build a beautiful new facility in a nicer part of Boston. The priest in charge was interviewed on the local news.

To my horror, the interview turned into an antisemitic diatribe against Israel. I turned it off, and decided I wasn't even going to go and check out the new building.

As I matured in Christ, I learned a lot about The Early Church Fathers and Church History. One of the biggest rifts in Christianity came about over a single Latin word in the Creed: Filioque.

To put this in the simplest terms, The Western Church believed that The Holy Spirit proceeds from The Father and the Son, while the Eastern Church believes that the Holy Spirit proceeds only from The Father. One would think we have better things to argue about, but this rift hasn't healed in centuries. In that particular part of the world, especially during the reign of ISIS, it didn't matter if you were Catholic or Orthodox, Maronite or Melkite, Monophysite or Myaphysite, Protestant or Pentecostal, ISIS would paint an Arabic "N" on your door ("N" for "Nazarene"), and you would be fair game for beheading, rape, capture, or slavery. Whole communities were wiped out during that horrible time.

In Today's Scripture, Jesus says that the Holy Spirit proceeds from The Father. But in other Scriptures, Jesus indicates that He Himself is sending the Holy Spirit. That is why every Scripture should be taken in CONTEXT. It also helps to have different translations, and to look at the meanings of words in the original languages

It would have saved Christianity a LOT of Trouble!
