With the presidency on the line in battlegrounds like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, why would Donald Trump venture into California, one of the most solidly Democratic states, just weeks before Election Day? Trump is almost certain to lose California, and that won't change after his scheduled Saturday stop in Coachella, a desert city east of Los Angeles best known for the annual music festival bearing its name. Still, there are practical reasons for him to visit, despite the Republican nominee's prospects Nov. 5 in the most populous state. The former president lost California in a landslide in 2020. He did get...

Catching up from the power and internet outage from Hurricane MiltonExplanation: The second solar eclipse of 2024 began in the Pacific. On October 2nd the Moon's shadow swept from west to east, with an annular eclipse visible along a narrow antumbral shadow path tracking mostly over ocean, making its only major landfall near the southern tip of South America, and then ending in the southern Atlantic. The dramatic total annular eclipse phase is known to some as a ring of fire. Also tracking across islands in the southern Pacific, the Moon's antumbral shadow grazed Easter Island allowing denizens to follow...

I cannot believe this needs to be said in 2024, but there is no context in which killing innocent Jews becomes understandable. Everywhere one looks these days, people are ‘contextualising’ pogroms. Among the cranky online right there is a creepy new trend of excuse-making for the Nazis’ extermination of Europe’s Jews. And among the woke left, there’s a rush to provide context for Hamas’s butchery of 7 October. Gaza is hellish, they say. Its people are oppressed, they insist. As if any of that explains the rape of Jewish women or the hurling of hand grenades into Jewish children’s faces....

Year: B(II).First readingWisdom 7:7-11I esteemed Wisdom more than sceptres or thronesI prayed, and understanding was given me;I entreated, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.I esteemed her more than sceptres and thrones;compared with her, I held riches as nothing.I reckoned no priceless stone to be her peer, for compared with her, all gold is a pinch of sand, and beside her silver ranks as mud.I loved her more than health or beauty, preferred her to the light, since her radiance never...

U.S. — Doug Emhoff boasted today that he could literally slap a woman in the middle of 5th Avenue and he wouldn't lose any votes for his wife, Kamala. "I can just slap a woman in the face, right in public, and they'll still love me," said Emhoff. "I'm the icon of masculinity, haven't you heard?" Emhoff went further, bragging he could have an affair, impregnate a nanny, force her to have an abortion, and the media would still praise him as a paragon of virtue. "Women, you can slap them, knock them up, they just let you do it,"...

... Although states are taking strides to increase base pay for workers, it is still not enough. In California, the living wage for an adult with no children is $27.32 and is $61.58 for an adult with two children. Further, the value of the federal wage is at its lowest point since 1956, although businesses are within the financial means to pay significantly more. These drastically low wages have critical effects on equality in the U.S., with women being considerably overrepresented in low-wage jobs. Not only will increasing the minimum wage help ensure all workers earn a living wage, but...

Saudi Arabia condemns “in the strongest terms” Israel’s decision to turn the Jerusalem headquarters of the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency into apartments. Last week, the Israel Land Authority said it was preparing plans to turn the Ma’alot Dafna complex into 1,440 housing units, after telling UNRWA it must evacuate the premises. The Saudi Foreign Ministry notes in an English-language statement “the Kingdom’s rejection of the continued blatant Israeli violations of international laws and resolutions…and its systematic political and military targeting of the United Nations agencies and its relief organizations. “The Kingdom also rejects the continued endangerment of the lives of...

Americans have always been able to make their own guns, even without serial numbers, but various anti-liberty/gun jurisdictions are considering changing that. “Ghost guns” are very much like “assault weapons” in several significant ways. They don’t exist in firearm nomenclature. They’re the invention of anti-liberty/gun Democrats/socialists/communists (D/s/cs), and they describe any gun, or in the case of “ghost guns” any gun part or group of parts, D/s/cs want to ban. Both are used in an insignificant number of crimes. The most common application of the term describes homemade guns without serial numbers. Americans have always been able to make their...

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) revealed Sunday that it had discovered a Hezbollah terrorist hiding in a tunnel amid stockpiles of weapons, as fellow terrorists retreated north rather than face advancing Israeli forces in direct combat. The IDF has encountered remarkably little resistance as its ground troops press forward across the border, after targeting Hezbollah outposts and weapons caches with artillery and airstrikes. However, the Hezbollah tunnel infrastructure is significant enough to present the threat of terrorists lying in wait and striking from the rear.

President Trump will highlight Kamala Harris' devastating policies that have wreaked havoc on Arizonans from the border to their wallets. KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman urged international organizations Sunday to respond to a claim that several Ukrainian prisoners of war were executed in Russia’s Kursk region, where Kyiv had launched an incursion in August. DeepState, a Ukrainian battlefield analysis site close to Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, said Russian troops shot and killed nine Ukrainian “drone operators and contractors” on Oct. 10 after they had surrendered. Dmytro Lubinets said on Telegram that he sent letters to the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross regarding the claim, calling it “another crime committed by the Russians.”

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin told his Israeli counterpart, Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant, that Israel needed to “pivot” to a “diplomatic pathway” in Lebanon, despite stunning Israeli advances against Hezbollah. The statement came after Israel acknowledged that two United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) “peacekeeping” soldiers had been injured by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) fire in southern Lebanon. The IDF said it had been firing on Hezbollah terrorists near a UNIFIL position. Later, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the United Nations to withdraw UNIFIL troops from Lebanon, as Hezbollah was using them as “human shields.”

Catching up after the power and internet outage due to Hurricane Milton Explanation: Five bright comets are compared in these panels, recorded by a coronograph on board the long-lived, sun-staring SOHO spacecraft. Arranged chronologically all are recognizable by their tails streaming away from the Sun at the center of each field of view, where a direct view of the overwhelmingly bright Sun is blocked by the coronagraph's occulting disk. Each comet was memorable for earthbound skygazers, starting at top left with Comet McNaught, the 21st century's brightest comet (so far).
