A research team from the University of Bonn has succeeded for the first time in using light stimuli to stop life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia in mouse hearts. Furthermore, as shown in computer simulations at Johns Hopkins University, this technique could also be used successfully for human hearts. The study opens up a whole new approach to the development of implantable optical defibrillators, in which the strong electrical impulses of conventional defibrillators are replaced by gentler, pain-free light impulses. The Journal of Clinical Investigation has now published the results. Ventricular fibrillation! When the heart muscle races and no longer contracts in an...

When Emmanuel Macron called the snap National Assembly election in June my sense was that this election was ultimately about electing a majority that was Pro-Capitalist and Pro-Israel. The new majority would weather tough times ahead driven by military conflict with Russia, economic conflict with China and the Middle East conflict in general. Pivotal in that majority would be the National Rally which in the end did not finish first like the New Popular Front of the Left did but together with Macron's centrist forces and Les Republicains the Mainstream Right create that majority... an angry man confronted President Macron...

Singer John Legend has called on the residents of Springfield, Ohio, to accept thousands of illegal Haitian migrants into their communities, claiming former president Donald Trump lied about them eating pets. Legend, who was born in Springfield, posted a video to his 15.8 million followers on Instagram saying Trump’s claims about the illegal migrants were false. “So I think all of us need to have the same kind of grace that we would want our ancestors to have when they moved here,” Legend said. “Springfield has had a large influx of Haitian immigrants who come to our city,” said the...

Pope Francis Weighs In on Trump-Harris Race with Damning Words That May Give Voters a Lot to Think AboutPope Francis, center, didn't support either former President Donald Trump, left, or Vice President Kamala Harris, but he threw out a challenge for votersIn more than a decade since taking over as head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has left little doubt about his preferences in American politicsEven in the face of the Democratic Party’s unflinching dogma promoting abortion — a procedure Catholic theology considers equivalent to murder — he has made his distaste for conservatives clear. But in cautiously weighing in...

Three big retailers have found another way to make money from shoppers - charging them for something that has always been a free perk. Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Kroger are charging customers between 50 cents and $3.50 to get cash back when they make a purchase, a study has revealed. Competitors including Walmart, Albertsons and Target are still offering it for free. Charging for cashback 'preys on shoppers' - especially those who rely on dollar stores, a Reddit user posted in reaction to the news. 'So many of their customers lack the car or the gas money to drive...

What do you think of these questions given to seventh-grade students at the Middle Village Prep Charter School in Queens County, New York? These are questions they were told to ask one another. And they were asked to write about them. "5. On an airplane, you are talking pleasantly to a person of average appearance. Unexpectedly, the person offers you $10,000 for one night of sex. Knowing there is no danger and that payment is certain, would you accept the offer? 14. What are your feelings about killing a handicapped child at birth? 19. What has been the worst sexual...

An artist’s concept shows the Voyager spacecraft traveling through space against a field of stars. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech NASA’s Voyager 1 team tackled complex challenges by successfully switching to backup thrusters after the primary ones became clogged with silicon dioxide. The spacecraft uses its thrusters to stay pointed at Earth, but after 47 years in space some of the fuel tubes have become clogged. This adaptation was complicated as the spacecraft, now in interstellar space, continues its journey on dwindling power. Resolving Thruster Issues on Voyager 1 Engineers working on NASA’s Voyager 1 probe have successfully mitigated an issue with the...

Artistic view of the imploding wire: a strong current of high-energy electrons (pink) heats up the surface, thus driving subsequent shockwaves that compress the wire radially. Credit: HZDR / T. Toncian, edited Using a novel laser method, scientists mimicked the extreme environments of stars and planets, enhancing our understanding of astrophysical phenomena and supporting nuclear fusion research. Extreme conditions prevail inside stars and planets. The pressure reaches millions of bars, and it can be several million degrees hot. Sophisticated methods make it possible to create such states of matter in the laboratory – albeit only for the blink of an...

It was my first time voting in a presidential election, and, while only twenty-one years old, I was already disenchanted with the state of partisan politics in America. Entering the voting booth I had no idea for whom I was going to cast my vote, but I was thrilled at the opportunity to exercise my newfound citizenship privilege. I scanned the seven names listed and stopped at the Communist Party candidate, Gus Hall. I was vaguely familiar with the name but knew nothing about him. I pulled the lever on my protest vote and became one of the 58,709 Americans...

Robin DiAngelo is a grifter who has made millions off a hateful book titled White Fragility. She is one of the left-wing “anti-racists” who were interviewed by Matt Walsh in the Daily Wire film Am I Racist?, which opened yesterday and which I reviewed at the link.Walsh’s interview of DiAngelo is one of the film’s highlights. She has no idea who Walsh is, and he introduces himself as “Matt.” You can’t be too careful these days, she says. The high point of the interview is when they talk about reparations, which DiAngelo favors. It happens that a member of the...

Vodka is perhaps the spirit with the least personality. It doesn't bring much by way of tasting notes to the table, but when you're looking for a clean, clear liquor to serve a boozy kick without dominating the flavor profile of your drink, vodka is what you want to reach for. Around the world, vodkas are made from grains, potatoes, sugar cane, and even maple sap. There are some pretty cheap ones on the market, leaving you wondering which of them are worth the buy? Bottom shelf is a term that can come with some stigma, but here we use...

It's a given that the number of conservative professors on campus is very small. What few there are probably exist solely in the economics department or in a few cases the law school. Lately, the idea of viewpoint diversity (sometimes called ideological diversity) has caught on among people on the right, especially as more woke politics is being exported by universities. This debate may have peaked last year when university presidents were called before congress to defend their handling of pro-Palestinian protests, but the basic idea that universities discriminate against conservatives has been around for a long time. Now there...

TITLES AND POWER Now I see why powerful people often wear sunglasses--the spotlight blinds them to reality. They suffer from a delusion that power means something. They suffer from the misconception that titles make a difference. They are under the impression that earthly authority will make a heavenly difference. Can I prove my point? Take this quiz: * Name the last ten Heisman trophy winners. * Name the last ten winners of the Miss America contest. * Name eight people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize. * How about the last ten Academy Award winners for best...

Boar's Head on Friday announced that it is "indefinitely" closing the Virginia manufacturing plant that's been linked to the deadly listeria outbreak. "Given the seriousness of the outbreak, and the fact that it originated at Jarratt, we have made the difficult decision to indefinitely close this location," which was shut down in late July, the company said. The company's Jarratt facility was linked to the meats sliced at deli counters, including Boar's Head brand liverwurst, that caused the biggest listeria outbreak since 2011, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

hile Donald Trump made baseless, dangerous claims that immigrants in Ohio were eating people’s pets in front of millions of viewers at Tuesday night’s presidential debate, Johnson Salomon, a Haitian man who moved to Springfield in 2020, was watching cartoons with his kids before putting them to bed. He got a text from a friend telling him to turn on the debate. When he saw the headlines about what the former president and Republican nominee in November’s election had said, he was in total shock. “This was a false claim. I couldn’t believe that such a high official could make...

It might not be such a “Love Story” after all. Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, may turn more voters away than it attracts. A new post-debate poll from YouGov released Saturday found that 8% of voters said the pop superstar’s nod is either “somewhat” or “much more likely” to convince them to cast their ballot for the Democrat. But a whopping 20% said they are “somewhat” or “much less likely” to vote for former President Donald Trump’s opponent now that Swift has spoken. Advertisement
