Boar's Head discontinues product, closes facility linked to listeria outbreak 'indefinitely'

Boar's Head on Friday announced that it is "indefinitely" closing the Virginia manufacturing plant that's been linked to the deadly listeria outbreak.

"Given the seriousness of the outbreak, and the fact that it originated at Jarratt, we have made the difficult decision to indefinitely close this location," which was shut down in late July, the company said.

The company's Jarratt facility was linked to the meats sliced at deli counters, including Boar's Head brand liverwurst, that caused the biggest listeria outbreak since 2011, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

You can eat a ham and cheese sandwich when driving, and it doesn’t super soak the bread if you pack in a lunch. BBQ is great, but good cold cuts have a place.

The local Blue Bell ice cream factory had to close due to listeria several years ago. They went through that place with a zeal to wipe out the bacteria, including full machine tear down & rebuild after a sanitation/cleaning protocol. It took quite a while but they did return to production. I expect this meat facility will require a similar effort.

I’ve noticed the local deli no longer has Boar’s Head Liverwurst or Olive Loaf. That is fine by me, I’ve never even been interested in trying it

Hopefully, the other brands that mega corporation Boars Head pushed out of local markets will return.

On a related note, my father was in the US Navy during WW2. And one day his warship was moored next to a British warship.

My father was amazed at how casually the British sailors would pee onto the deck, into a lifeboat, etc. Very odd, thought my father.

Listeria is easily eliminated by irradiation. Unfortunately, people have seen too many sci-fi movies to ever eat meat made safe with harmless radiation.
