(WTVO) — Soon Illinoisans will no longer be able to buy fluorescent light as a result of the Clean Lighting Act.
The main goal of the act is to stop pollution that comes from fluorescent lights. Fluorescent lighting is known to be incorrectly disposed of which leads to mercury and other toxins being released into the air.
The act changes the wording of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act. The law will take partial effect in 2026 by banning screw-based or bayonet-based compact fluorescent lamps from being produced or sold.
By 2027, the law will take full effect and will also ban pin-base compact fluorescent lights and fluorescent tubes.

Wasn’t it Obozo Bush who banned the lightbulb?
incandescent bulbs were banned under obummer
so I loaded up on them
I wonder if Illinois will be going back to candles
Cui bono...
Where do they think they are? California?
I’m an EE. I specify LEDs in all my building designs.
Fluorescents and incandescents suck. LEDs are the future. They do last longer, have less energy consumption and have the same Kelvin rating (color temp).
All that remains is LED bulbs.
Aren’t those Chineses-made curly-q fake light bulbs just small versions of fluorescent tubes? Governor Jelly Belly may be upsetting his Chinese overlords.
Fear not other countries have them by the billions and cheap.
The high wattage CFLs were a fire hazard. I used them in my basement (100-150W equivalent) and had more than one burn out at the base where the voltage was supplied. Melted and to the point of becoming fire. Yet, they were what this government pushed.
The only real solution was LEDs throughout and as time wore on they became brighter and color temperature options broadened.
I like the brightness of 100 watt equiv. LED bulbs in 500k daylight, drawing about 15 watts apiece, I also use a couple of 300 watt equiv. drawing about 20 watts apiece.
In my kitchen I have 2 each over every work area, if I want I can turn them all on giving me 11 100 watt bulbs in daylight clarity/brightness, and using only about 170 watts of electricity, which is nice since I have only a 60 amp electrical box.
See post 11, I like bright lighting, and I like cheap, and I don’t like extra heat during the summer, and while I use warm white LEDs in the living room (with one 300 watt equiv. daylight bulb in the mix to boost the brightness) I like the daylight bulbs for the clarity of detail and brightness.
You probably see a lot of expert lighting designs with the very best of LED bulbs and lighting fixtures, top quality lighting is a fantastic capability, even those of us short of money should do some research and try to maximize the lighting in our modest homes and work shop, and garages.
Rather than just letting free market technology make these obsolete via of better choices, the communists want to show the “unwashed masses” just how they can control every aspect of human existence. spit.
Nope. Candles are out. Particulate Matter (smoke), a wildly dangerous OPEN FLAME, and of course, the warming effects of same. (I also purchased what I’m pretty sure is a lifetime supply of incandescents of various types before the sales ban... such a renegade.)
Banning in 0000 is their new scam . Wait didn’t they go crazy about everyone should use fluorescent light bulbs ,LOL Every new group of these nuts are nutter than last group ,LOL
What will they do when they ‘discover’ that fluorescence is
basis of white LEDs?
I use 100 w bulbs in the well house to keep the pump from freezing and 40 watts in the dog houses. Now can’t find them anymore.
When buying baby chicks I used the same to keep them warm for a few weeks till feathered out. Not any more.Sad.
The politicians prefer to work in the dark where nobody can see what they are doing.
Looks like they’re banning the compact curlicues in 2026 and then the full sized tubes in 2027.
I have to say, the transition to LEDs has been pretty painless and overall an improvement.
