So many things can keep you from seeing your loved ones in person, from busy schedules to long distances to a rather unexpected pandemic. According to science, if you want to feel more connected to the people you're talking to, you should call them instead of texting. A new study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, found that communication interactions that...

The Asahi Shimbun reports that scientists from Japan's Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties have identified the function of a six-inch strip of wood unearthed in 2001 at a government workers' office in the ancient capital of Fujiwara-kyo. Infrared imaging of the object revealed that the fragment is part of a 1,300-year-old multiplication table written in kanji. The entire multiplication table with all of the equations written out was likely about 13 inches long, explained team member Kuniya Kuwata. In this section, which was likely from the upper-right corner of the document, the equations were written in five rows...

Self-described “progressives” appear to be tiring of Kamala Harris’s effort to downplay her left-wing policies, and are reminding her that they do not want to be taken for granted as she tries to portray herself as a “moderate” candidate. While Harris told CNN last month, in her first and only media interview, that “my values have not changed,” Harris’s campaign has been telling the media that she no longer supports some of her most radical policies, such as canceling private health insurance, defunding the police, ending detention for illegal migrants, backing the “Green New Deal,” banning fracking, and other policies...

In July, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the country's low birth rate was "catastrophic" for Russia's future. Russia's birth rate is at its lowest since 1999 with the number of live births falling under 100,000 in June, causing concern in Moscow over what has been described as a severe population downswing. From January to June of 2024, 599,600 children were both in Russia — 16,000 less than the same period in 2023, according to data published by Russia's governmental statistic agency Rosstat. Over the same period, Russia's population decline accelerated by 18%, with 49,000 more deaths recorded in 2024 than...

Democrats privately fear that Vice President Kamala Harris’s debate performance will not meet the party’s expectations after weeks of media hype. The debate will be the first time many viewers see Harris as the party’s nominee. Harris hid from the media and only sat for one interview. Former President Donald Trump, meanwhile, conducted many interviews and is the most experienced debater in the “modern age,” according to CNN. “People are extremely anxious about her performance,” Ray Zaccaro, a Democrat strategist and former Senate aide, told the Hill, noting the showdown could be “catastrophic or monumental … There’s a sense of...

It was the embrace that launched a thousand tweets: on Sunday, Taylor Swift hugged Brittany Mahomes – the wife of NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes – at the US Open. A photo of the hug immediately had tongues wagging. If you’re not Extremely Online, the only thing that might stand out from the innocuous-seeming hug photo is that Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce (also in the photo) has horrendous taste in hats. The broader context, however, is Mahomes’s link to Donald Trump. Last week the former president thanked Mahomes for “strongly defending me” after she liked one of his Instagram posts back...

An illegal immigrant arrested for the rape of a 10-year-old in Pontotoc County crossed the southern border 24 years ago and was deported at least once before. 34-year-old Filiberto Gonzalez was detained on Aug. 12 and charged with two counts of rape of a 10-year-old boy, according to the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Department. Chief Criminal Investigator Jimmy Whitehead told Magnolia Tribune that Gonzalez came to the U.S. when he was 10 years old. According to Whitehead, Gonzalez was previously arrested in Pontotoc County on charges of domestic violence, alcohol-related offenses, and contempt of court. Whitehead also said that U.S. Immigration...

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is plowing ahead with his plan to avert a government shutdown despite GOP opposition that is large enough to tank the effort, setting the stage for a potentially embarrassing vote on the House floor that will foil the Speaker’s funding strategy. At least six Republicans, including hard-line conservatives and defense hawks, have said they will vote against Johnson’s government funding gambit, which pairs a six-month continuing resolution (CR) with a Trump-backed bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote. Republicans can only afford to lose four of their members if all Democrats vote “no” and there is...

In yet another setback for the Biden-Harris regime’s push for electric vehicles, American consumers are showing a distinct lack of enthusiasm for purchasing new EVs. The latest Mobility Consumer Index (MCI) from consulting firm EY reveals a shocking drop in interest, with only 34% of US consumers planning to buy an electrified vehicle—down from 48% in 2023. This decline raises serious questions about the administration’s ability to force their “Electric Revolution” onto consumers. Now, after seemingly rushing to promote electric vehicles as the future of transportation, the reality is hitting hard: fully electric vehicle interest has plummeted to a mere...

Covid lockdowns, such as school closures, canceled sports activities and stay-at-home orders, prematurely aged teen brains by as much as four years, researchers from the University of Washington found. The new study, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is more evidence of how disruptions to daily routines may have contributed to behavioral problems, an increase in eating disorders, anxiety and depression in adolescent girls and boys. Scientists at the university's Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences (I-LABS) began the study using MRIs in 2018 to see how the brain structure of 160 teens from the...

For the nearly two centuries since this Etruscan oil lamp was found near the city of Cortona, Italy, it has confounded scholars. It was unearthed in a ditch, so its original context is unknown. And its combination of imagery is unique in the ancient Mediterranean world, leaving nothing to compare it with that might hint at how it was used. On the bottom of the lamp, at the center, is an image of a fearsome Gorgon surrounded by snakes. This Gorgon is encircled by a frieze of animals, including dolphins, in combat. In the next ring, crouching male demigods known...
