Speaker Johnson plowing ahead with funding plan despite GOP opposition

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is plowing ahead with his plan to avert a government shutdown despite GOP opposition that is large enough to tank the effort, setting the stage for a potentially embarrassing vote on the House floor that will foil the Speaker’s funding strategy.

At least six Republicans, including hard-line conservatives and defense hawks, have said they will vote against Johnson’s government funding gambit, which pairs a six-month continuing resolution (CR) with a Trump-backed bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote. Republicans can only afford to lose four of their members if all Democrats vote “no” and there is full attendance.

The Speaker, however, is moving forward with his plan, arguing that the importance of the legislation — especially the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act — demands a vote on the floor.

“We’re going to put the SAVE Act and the CR together and we’re going to move that through the process,” Johnson told reporters Tuesday morning. “I am resolved to that. We’re not looking at any other alternative or any other step; I think it’s the right thing to do.”

Putting the SAVE Act together with the funding bill will likely kill it. Democrats HATE fair elections.

It’s something because it will put the onus on the Senate and Biden to fund this or defund it. It’s a good poison pill. It’s not everything, but you can get something, or shut the government down. I’m good either way.

The Senate won’t pass it and Biden will veto it because it has the SAVE Act with it.

This is really about showmanship. The dems want to pin a govt shutdown on R’s. Johnson wants this to pass so the R’s can say they did their part. The D’s hold the R’s hostage EVERY TIME because they will only let a massive overspending CR pass and they accuse the R’s of shutting down the govt if they don’t cave on everything.

I think it comes down to the idiots in this country. If we have enough voters who buy into the media/dem crap, the country is lost. This election is a trial of the American public, to see if we win the Darwin Award.

Great optics to lose an important floor vote late during an election year.

But what choice does he have? He owes his speaker ship to the Democrats.

I'm not going to criticize anyone trying to keep our nation intact doing their job.

Perhaps WE THE PEOPLE could do OURS and utilize our Second Amendment before we criticize what others are trying to do.

Even if you accept the Democrat rationalization that the SAVE Act is not needed, why oppose it? What harm does it do?

The 6 "R"s opposed (per the article, highlighting is mine):

The chorus of concerns that emerged publicly Monday night was headlined by Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.), the chair of the House Armed Services Committee, who said he was opposed to the spending plan because of the impact it would have at the Department of Defense.

“Six months are terrible for defense,” Rogers said. Asked if other members of the Armed Services panel would join him in opposition, he responded: “I hope so.”

Republican Reps. Matt Rosendale (Mont.), Thomas Massie (Ky.), Cory Mills (Fla.), Tim Burchett (Tenn.) and Jim Banks (Ind.) have also publicly said that they will not support the CR-plus-SAVE Act, mounting pressure on Johnson in the government funding negotiations.

If they don’t pass an emergency budget supplemental bill for the VA, the VA will be out of money at the end of September. “Some people” need that money, dammit.

One of the main constitutional jobs of Congress is to pass a budget..
Not a CR, but a real damn budget..
Has not been done since fubo..
Vote NO and shut the damn government down!!!!
Vote NO until you do your freaking jobs and pass a budget!!!!
You all took an oath to uphold the constitution...
You have failed miserably...

If Mr. Johnson has attached the SAVE Act to the CR, then he is definitely NOT working for the Democrats this time around. It would be embarrassing to see the “hardliners” torpedo a shot at having good elections.

Johnson knew that accepting the Speakership would end his political career as an elected Republican politician in a cycle or two by doing the dirty work for all of the cowardly Republicans in the House.

But he knows that when he leaves elected office, he will make millions as a lobbyist just like Boehner.
