When I was 18 years old, I decided to hike all 2,193 miles of the Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine. It was a strange year to come of age, 2020. Covid had canceled my high school graduation and delayed my freshman year of college; it was hard to see how to go out into the world and grow up. But from my bedroom in the suburbs of Chicago, there was an image I couldn’t get out of my head, a memory from a childhood trip in Vermont: little carved signs pointing out a path through the woods. Turn one...

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has won a $1.4 billion settlement from Facebook-parent Meta over charges that it captured users' facial and biometric data without properly informing them it was doing so. Paxton said that starting in 2011, Meta, then known as Facebook, rolled out a “tag” feature that involved software that learned how to recognize and sort faces in photos. In doing so, it automatically turned on the feature without explaining how it worked, Paxton said — something that violated a 2009 state statute governing the use of biometric data, as well as running afoul of the state's deceptive...

Instead of quoting a historical figure like Adam Smith, Daniel Kahneman or John Maynard Keynes, legendary investor Warren Buffett believes the most consequential words on modern economics came from a surprising source: former U.S. President George W. Bush. At the height of the 2008 financial crisis, Bush said: “If money isn’t loosened up, this sucker could go down!” Buffett deemed this quip “the 10 most important words in the history of economics,” he told billionaire Dan Gilbert during an interview at the Detroit Homecoming event at the College for Creative Studies in 2014. Here’s why Buffett believes these words had...

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who ambushed a stunned U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken during an early encounter in 2021 with allegations that America has a worse human rights record than China, gave Blinken one more political lecture on Saturday. Wang told Blinken that China “does not seek hegemony or power politics” like the United States does, and it “has the best record among major powers on peace and security issues.” Wang scolded Blinken on the sidelines of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meeting in Laos, telling him the U.S. must show more respect for the Chinese...

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday said President Biden’s proposed term limits for Supreme Court justices are “unconstitutional” and will be “dead on arrival” in Congress. McConnell, one of the Supreme Court’s most ardent defenders in the Senate, said he was “surprised” that Biden, a former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, proposed authorizing presidents to appoint justices every two years and limiting them to 18 years in active service. “I couldn’t be more disappointed. This is a man who was chairman of the Judiciary Committee for a long time. He absolutely knows what he recommended is unconstitutional,...

The FBI has linked Thomas Matthew Crooks, the would-be assassin of former President Donald Trump, to a social media account purportedly filled with anti-immigrant and anti-Semitic rhetoric. This revelation was made during a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing on Tuesday, where U.S. Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe and FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate provided updates on the ongoing investigation. Despite initial reports that investigators had found no threatening posts on Crooks’ social media accounts, Deputy Director Abbate claimed new evidence had surfaced. “Something just very recently uncovered that I want to share is a social media account which is...

So much for the establishment media’s overhype of Democrat presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris: a scientific model published on Tuesday demonstrates that GOP nominee for president former President Donald Trump is heavily favored to win the election. Statistician Nate Silver’s model, which pulls together polls and other data to forecast the probabilities of which candidate will win in November, opens the new race between Trump and Harris with an aggressive prediction of a likely Trump victory. Trump is forecast to have a 61.3-percent chance of winning, while Harris only has a 38.1-percent chance of winning. That means Trump has...

So Team (W)USA's quest for their 8th straight Gold Medal started off on the right foot yesterday with a 102-76 victory over Japan. That result is not the point of this blog, seeing as the team has not even lost a GAME in Olympic play since 1992. My eyebrows didn't raise a millimeter when I saw they won big. However one stat from yesterday's game that did suprise me was to hear that of all the games played thus far, Team USA's was the least attended by a mile. Look I'm not saying that their cranky head coach Cheryl Reeve...

Former President Donald Trump’s appeal in the “Blue Wall” states might be too strong for Vice President Kamala Harris to overcome, Democrats indicated this week in fear of losing the presidential election. Seven states — Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and North Carolina — will decide the president, political experts believe. If Trump wins one or more of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, Harris’s chances of obtaining 270 electoral votes become narrower. She’s done an amazing job not only uniting the base but exciting the base,

On Thursday on MSNBC’s “Monring Joe,” network contributor Molly Jong-Fast argued that Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), the GOP vice presidential nominee, wanted “more white children” and that this is why he made his comment about policy directed by “childless cat ladies” in 2021. Vance and his wife Usha are the parents of three biracial children. “Well, so what’s interesting is this is this natalism that comes from an authoritarian playbook, right?” Jong-Fast said. “That there there need to be more white children, right? That’s the idea that there’s, you know, this is about Great Replacement Theory racism, right? This is...

The Russian Foreign Ministry has reacted to the Israeli regime's latest strike on Lebanese soil that led to the killing and injury of several people. Israel’s strikes on Lebanon constitute a flagrant violation of international law, the Russian foreign ministry told TASS. "This is a blatant violation of international law," the ministry said. Do you have your VMware ESXi hypervisor joined to Active Directory? Well, the latest news from Microsoft serves as a reminder that you might not want to do that given the recently patched vulnerability that has security experts deeply concerned.CVE-2024-37085 only carries a 6.8 CVSS rating, but has been used as a post-compromise technique by many of the world's most high-profile ransomware groups and their affiliates, including Black Basta, Akira, Medusa, and Octo Tempest/Scattered Spider. The vulnerability allows attackers who have the necessary privileges to create AD groups – which isn't necessarily an AD admin – to gain full control of...

Kamala Harris's search for a running mate has hit yet another snag. Previously, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.) took herself out of consideration, and two others have followed suit since dirt dug up on them made them a lot less likely to be picked. Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-Pa.) has been accused of covering up sexual harassment in his office, and then Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) has been exposed as the co-founder of a spy balloon company that was partially funded by China. This may not preclude Kamala from selecting either, but it likely hurts both of their chances. Now, another top...

Less than three weeks ago, President Donald Trump barely survived an assassination attempt at his political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The incident, which resulted in the injury of President Trump and two of his supporters, and the tragic death of Trump supporter Corey Comperatore, has received surprisingly little media attention. Despite the gravity of the situation, the mainstream media has largely ignored this historic event. The lack of coverage has sparked concerns and criticisms from various quarters, including Trump himself, who recently highlighted the issue on his Truth Social platform. Newly surfaced evidence reveals significant lapses in the security measures...
