Milan Kundera, whose dissident writings in communist Czechoslovakia transformed him into an exiled satirist of totalitarianism, has died in ParisMilan Kundera, the renowned but reclusive author whose dissident writings transformed him into an exiled satirist of totalitarianism and explorer of identity and the human condition, has died in Paris. He was 94. Kundera died Tuesday afternoon, his long-standing publishing house Gallimard said in a one-sentence statement on Wednesday. It confirmed that he died in Paris, where he has lived for decades, but provided no further information. The European Parliament held a moment of silence upon news of his passing. Kundera...

Which state will report power shortages first? Those that are caused by the high heat warnings over the next month?

An open letter signed by “46 foreign policy experts” calling for more arms shipments to Ukraine published in POLITICO failed to mention ties of nearly half of the signatories to the defence industry, allegedly glossing over conflicts of interest, the Washington-based Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft claimed.

A study has shown that a physical activity dose equivalent to just 20 minutes a day (for five days a week) of moderate-intensity physical activity, like brisk walking, was linked with less risk of depressive symptoms and odds of major depression. Recent research has shown moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was linked with benefits for depression. "We sought to identify the lowest dose of MVPA associated with protection against Major Depression and depressive symptoms and the extent to which this varied based on the presence of chronic disease," added Dr. Laird. Key findings: A physical activity dose equivalent to 20 minutes...

This is a pretty darn impressive video of the Iron Dome in action.

Newly obtained documents indicate that then-outgoing President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and their administration sought to hamper the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump in significant ways. According to The Daily Signal, which obtained the documents via a Freedom of Information Act request made to the National Security Agency (NSA) two years ago, “show how much the D.C. elites feared” Trump, the Western Journal reported. “In the 217 redacted pages, we see the coalescing of the effort to smear the incoming president as a Russian agent,” the outlet noted further. According to The Daily Signal: “The documents reveal...

Threads, the soon-to-be-launched app touted by Facebook (now known as Meta) as the “sane” alternative to Elon Musk’s Twitter, will — much like other Facebook apps — collect a dizzying array of details about its users. Screenshots of the app, which is available for pre-download on the App Store, shows it will collect data on users’ health & fitness, financial information, contact information, user content, browsing history, usage data, diagnostics, purchases, location, contacts, search history, identifiers, sensitive info, and more. Many other apps, including Twitter, collect data on their users, but Facebook (along with Google) is particularly notorious for it....

Policy-makers are being urged to take notice of a study that confirms that undertaking a short program of high intensity interval training before surgery can substantially help with recovery. The study reviewed and analyzed 12 studies including 832 patients who had undertaken preoperative high-intensity interval training. Such training involves repeated aerobic high-intensity intervals at about 80% of the maximum heart rate followed by active recovery. Dr. Kari Clifford says the study included all types of major surgeries—those expected to last more than two hours or with an anticipated blood loss of greater than 500ml—and included liver, lung, colorectal, urologic and...

Ken Griffin, founder of Miami-based hedge fund Citadel, is frustrated with DeSantis' lack of progress in the GOP primary race, and has 'hit the pause button' on his support, ABC News reported on Thursday, citing a person familiar with Griffin's thinking. However, Griffin's spokesperson dismissed the claim, telling DailyMail.com: 'Ken is not pausing anything. He continues to assess the field.' According to sources cited in the recent ABC News report, Griffin has grown impatient as he waits for DeSantis to show progress as a presidential candidate. The outlet reported that other GOP donors have privately begun to question DeSantis' viability...

As the revelations of potential bribery, bank fraud and tax evasion swirl around Joe Biden and Hunter Biden, both men, who are increasingly appearing together, seem extraordinary calm and unconcerned in public as Joe flashes his signature supercilious and mocking smirk whenever he is asked about the various investigation into his and his son’s activities over the past 12 years. Thanks to pre-emptive presidential pardons, Joe knows that he, Hunter, and the family will never have to answer for any of their alleged egregious criminality. The Supreme Court has ruled that a president can issue a pardon before charges have...

Hunter Biden was spotted Thursday walking with his Secret Service agent in Malibu, as his lawyer sent a cease-and-desist letter to former President Donald Trump's attorneys insisting he stop saying the cocaine found at the White House belonged to the first son. Hunter's attorney Abbe Lowell asked the ex-president's legal team to push Trump to stop disparaging the Bidens, for fear that there could be an escalation of violence akin to January 6 or the hammer attack on Paul Pelosi. In recent Truth Social posts, Trump has made wild claims about the Biden family's drug use - suggesting on Thursday...

In the final year of World War II, the U.S. spent about 38% of its GDP on its military. When adjusted for inflation, the military budget over those four years of war came to a staggering $4.1 trillion in 2020 dollars. And as Visual Capitalist's Pallave Rao and Joyce Ma detail below, almost 80 years later, modern day military spending isn’t much of a far cry from World War II budgets. The top spenders have continued to increase their military capabilities, while war in Ukraine has caused countries in the region to re-evaluate their budgets as well.In 2022, global military budgets...

p>The phrase “small town America” often conjures up images of white picket fences, well-trimmed lawns, and big houses. But how safe is modern-day suburbia in America? Some of the smallest places in the country can actually be among the most dangerous. Take for example Bessemer, Alabama, with a population of around 26,000 and a violent crime rate of 33.1 per every 1,000 residents. That said, there are many small cities that are true havens for families across the United States. Visual Capitalist's Avery Koop uses this map to showcase the safest cities in the U.S., using FBI data and Census Bureau populations...

A recent Gallup poll finds that a majority of nearly 70 percent of respondents oppose allowing men who claim to be transgender women to play women’s sports, and 55 percent say changing one’s gender is “morally wrong.” The poll released on Monday seems to show that the radical transgender movement is not achieving its desired goal of normalizing transgenderism. Indeed, it seems to be backfiring. Two findings, in particular, seem to show that many are pulling away from trans acceptance. A previous poll from 2021 found that 51 percent felt changing one’s gender is “morally wrong,” but this year’s survey...

Yesterday California adopted a set of new math standards which are focused less on math skills and more on equity and “meaning-making.”The California State Board of Education voted to adopt a new—and much-debated—math framework on Wednesday, concluding a years-long process that involved three drafts, prompted hundreds of suggested revisions, and reignited decades-old arguments over the purpose of math education and the meaning of equity. The 1,000-page framework aims to put meaning-making at the center of the math classroom, promoting a focus on problem-solving and applying math knowledge to real-world situations. It also encourages teachers to make math culturally relevant and accessible...

During the NATO summit this week, President Biden promised Ukraine President Zelenskyy that there would be no end to U.S. assistance to his country. Coincidentally, perhaps, this announcement has appeared on the White House's website:So, what's going on what that? Something's up.Nothing to see here. The Secret Service gave a classified briefing to Congress on Thursday about the cocaine that was found in the West Wing over the Fourth of July weekend on Sunday, July 2, after the House Oversight Committee demanded answers from them.As we reported, they’re insulting our intelligence with the claim that agents are unable to find the culprit and that they’re wrapping up the case already. That’s despite visitor logs and cameras. It’s a horrible take, and the statement the Secret Service released about what they did to investigate just makes them look worse. This is just going to feed the...
