Court Strikes Down Racism In a case brought against Harvard University and the University of North Carolina by Students for Fair Admissions, the US Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that using different admission standards for different races is unconstitutional. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote "Harvard and UNC admissions programs cannot be reconciled with the guarantee of the 14th Amendment that all persons are entitled to equal protection under the law. Granting special privileges to some based solely on skin color is illegal." Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, writing that "given the history of discrimination against blacks a counterbalancing period of discrimination...

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Sunday slammed the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of a Christian web designer in Colorado who refuses to create websites to celebrate same-sex weddings out of religious objections, saying the case was designed “for the clear purpose of chipping away” at LGBTQ equality. “It’s very revealing that there’s no evidence that this web designer was ever even approached by anyone asking for a website for a same-sex wedding,” Buttigieg, the first out Cabinet secretary confirmed by the Senate, told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.” The Supreme Court’s conservative majority, in a 6-3...

(Daily readings from the USCCB)“Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” John 20:27–29Thomas the Apostle, in many ways, represents each and every one of us in this exchange with Jesus. We’d like to believe that we always believe and are not unbelieving. But it’s important to admit...

The ever-expanding popularity of weight loss injectables has NYC moms clamoring to get their shots — even if it means resorting to “shady” and “unethical” measures. Ozempic and Wegovy, brand name semaglutides initially designed for people with Type 2 diabetes, have surged in demand due to their controversial effectiveness as weight loss drugs. And despite the FDA’s warning against using off-brand semaglutide compounds due to their potential “adverse effects,” a shortage of brand-name drugs and their hefty $1,300-a-month price tag is motivating people to seek cheaper, more accessible options. One 40-year-old fashion executive and mom of three who lives on...

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked French leader Emmanuel Macron for sending light combat tanks to Kyiv, and Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov was filmed riding in one. But a Ukrainian commander says the highly mobile AMX-10 RC infantry fighting vehicles -- sometimes described as light tanks -- are "impractical" for front-line attacks, claiming one four-man crew has already died because of the vehicle's thin armour.

Roughly 300,000 illegal aliens across Illinois will soon be eligible to secure standard driver’s licenses thanks to a law signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D). “This legislation is a significant step in eliminating the barriers to opportunity that many undocumented immigrants face,” Pritzker said in a statement. “We’re ensuring every eligible individual can obtain a driver’s license, making our roads safer, decreasing stigma, and creating more equitable systems for all.” The law will take effect at the start of next year. Illinois, today, has an illegal alien population of about 680,000 — one of the largest in the United States....

BALTIMORE, Thursday, July 2 -- 11 P.M. I shall send you soon an account from the battlefield near Gettysburgh of yesterday's battle, which is very favorable. Meanwhile, the cheering announcement has been made of the capture of a large number of prisoners, some of whom have arrived here and others are on the way. The number is stated at 6,000; but this may be an exaggeration. Gen. SCMENCK has just announced at the Eutaw House that 2,400 of them have already arrived. BALTIMORE, Thursday, July 2. The American learns from parties who left Gettysburgh at noon to-day that everything was...

Well, it was another banner week from the six unelected zealots who apparently make all of America's public policy decisions. Yet even after the hard-right supermajority on the Supreme Court torched affirmative action, greenlit all manner of ugly discrimination against LGBTQ Americans and yanked up to $20,000 from millions of indebted borrowers, President Biden and his allies still can't bring themselves to threaten or even contemplate serious reform to the judicial branch. Instead, they seem content to watch our very own Guardian Council wreak total havoc on American society...

U.S. and Mexican officials are discussing a new U.S. refugee program for some non-Mexican asylum seekers waiting in Mexico, four sources said, part of President Joe Biden's attempts to create more legal avenues for migration. The program would likely be open to Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan refugees in Mexico, the sources said. Migrants would need to show they were in Mexico before June 6 to qualify, one of the sources said. The sources - a U.S. official, a Mexican official and two people familiar with the matter who all spoke on condition of anonymity - stressed that the issue...

For as long as I can remember, the Democratic Party has claimed to be a champion for all Americans, particularly for the working class, minorities and for those who are considered marginalized, oppressed or downtrodden. But somewhere between fighting to keep slavery alive (Andrew Johnson); deliberately reducing the number of black civilian employees from the federal workforce and airing a film that glorified the Ku Klux Klan at the White House (Woodrow Wilson); throwing Japanese Americans into internment camps during World War II (Franklin Delano Roosevelt); promoting a culture of government dependence, poverty and fatherlessness (Lyndon Johnson); creating racial tension...

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, the president falsely claimed that Russia is at war with Iraq. Russia is at war with Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin is “clearly losing the war in Iraq,” Biden told the press pool, “losing the war at home. And he has become a bit of a pariah around the world.” On Tuesday, during an unrelated fundraising event in Chevy Chase, Md., Biden had made the exact same slip-up, mistaking Ukraine for Iraq. “If anybody told you … that we’d be able to bring all of Europe together in the onslaught on Iraq and get NATO to...
