The 2015 paper published by UNC Chapel Hill Professor Ralph Baric et al. titled A SARS-like cluster of circulating bat coronaviruses shows potential for human emergence. As the authors (including Zhengli-Li Shi at the Wuhan Institute of Virology) state in their abstract: "Here we examine the disease potential of a SARS-like virus, SHC014-CoV, which is currently circulating in Chinese horseshoe bat populations1. Using the SARS-CoV reverse genetics system2, we generated and characterized a chimeric virus expressing the spike of bat coronavirus SHC014 in a mouse-adapted SARS-CoV backbone. The results indicate that group 2b viruses encoding the SHC014 spike in a...

Former President Trump on Monday opened the door on what might be the nastiest primary fight yet, lashing out at acolyte-turned-rival Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida who is widely seen as his most powerful rival for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Eight years removed from a 2016 GOP primary where he regularly mocked would-be rivals such as “low-energy” Jeb Bush and “lyin’” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Trump ahead of a visit to Iowa told reporters on his plane that he regretted endorsing DeSantis during his 2018 bid for governor. Later in the evening, he used a speech in Davenport...

The one year I don’t go to the movies, the Asians dominate the 95th Academy Awards. The film Everything Everywhere All at Once scored seven wins, including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. I have yet to see the film, but any movie that combines the immigrant experience with the multiverse (not MCU) must be quite the trip. The plot revolves around a Chinese immigrant laundromat worker who must set things right in several parallel universes featuring herself to avoid a calamity. It has historic for actress Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian woman to win in...

For patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma, progression-free survival and overall survival are improved with lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab versus sunitinib, according to a study. Toni K. Choueiri, M.D. and colleagues conducted a protocol-prespecified updated overall survival analysis of the phase 3 CLEAR trial. Patients with clear-cell advanced renal cell carcinoma who had not received any systemic anticancer therapy were eligible and randomly assigned to receive lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab, lenvatinib plus everolimus, or sunitinib (355, 357, and 357, respectively). This updated analysis did not report on patients in the lenvatinib plus everolimus group. The median follow-up for progression-free survival was 27.8...

Florida Democrat Representative Anna Eskamani did her part in kicking off the Pride at the Capitol activities by stepping up to the mic and announcing that the legislation the group is protesting is “erasing trans babies”. Yes, you read that correctly: Erasing. Trans. Babies. Take a listen to the jaw-dropping statement at the 0:18 mark: Let’s pretend for a moment that there even is such a thing as trans babies. How could you tell if a baby was trans? How would trans babies communicate their trans status? Do they cry when you put them in a color traditionally associated with...

This year, Uncle Sam will take his cut of the past year’s earnings on April 18. Many taxpayers are undoubtedly wondering how this year’s Tax Day will affect their finances, as a lot of people are still struggling financially as a result of the pandemic. Since the tax code is so complicated and has rules based on individual household characteristics, it’s hard for the average person to tell how they will be impacted. One simple ratio known as the “tax burden” helps cut through the confusion. Unlike tax rates, which vary widely based on an individual’s circumstances, tax burden measures...

Patients with "blinding" headaches known as Idiopathic Intercranial Hypertension (IIH) could be treated with an injectable peptide used for type 2 diabetes, a new trial has found. The study reports on a phase two trial of a drug called exenatide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, as a potential treatment for IIH. The IIH Pressure Trial found that for the seven patients who received regular injections of the drug, currently approved for use in Type 2 Diabetes, led to a drop in pressure in the brain during both short (2.5hrs and 24hrs) and long term (12 weeks) measurements. The trial also saw...

That’s a whale of an economy you’ve got there, Brandon. The good news is swirling like…well…Ty*D*Bol. It sure seems you and your team are the only ones missing the picture.None of this is news to any of us, no matter how you insist it’s not happening or better than it was.Beef prices were holding food down a little (it was because ranchers couldn't afford to feed their herd) That may have worked it's way through.. Yesterday I wrote about the possible end of the Bay Area Rapid Transit train system (BART). Ridership on BART trains dropped dramatically during the pandemic and hasn’t recovered to even half of pre-pandemic levels. That puts the Bay Area in a financial bind with just two possible outcomes. Either the state of California steps up with hundreds of millions of dollars per year to subsidize the system or BART will have to dramatically scale back operations, shutting down entire lines, closing stops laying off most workers and reducing train service to once an hour.Today the LA Times published a story...

Trump holds a 24-point lead over the rest of the potential 2024 Republican Party primary field, according to a hypothetical poll. The Morning Consult poll released Tuesday shows that more than half of potential GOP primary voters, 52 percent, want Trump as the nominee. Wellesley College used to be what was called a women’s college. In keeping with progressive orthodoxy, the school already admits trans women but some students have decided that’s not enough. Today the school will vote on a resolution to accept all nonbinary and trans men applicants as well. The private Massachusetts college, which boasts on its website about being a place for “women who will make a difference in the world,” is holding the referendum after some students flagged concerns about the current admission policy.Wellesley — whose alumnae include Hillary Clinton and Madeleine Albright — at the moment only accepts students...

Joe Biden’s Treasury Department has been stymying the effort to get suspicious activity reporters related to the Biden family business deals for years. It’s been a scandal that hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves. When Rep. James Comer (R-KY) tried to get the records before the Republicans took over the House, the Biden administration changed the rules that prevented members of Congress from getting the records unless it was from the Committees (which Democrats controlled). Then, even when the Republicans took over the House, the Treasury Department wasn’t complying initially. But as we reported, the House Oversight Committees subpoenaed the bank...

Violent Antifa protesters are being arrested on the University of California, Davis campus after smashing doors and windows as they attempted to storm a speech by Charlie Kirk sponsored by the school’s Turning Point USA chapter.Antifa activists have been attacking Kirk in the press and on campus in the lead-up to the event, and one of the largest newspapers in the state, the Sacramento Bee, ran a piece Tuesday falsely claiming that Kirk has “called for the lynching of trans people” and calling for the cancellation of his speaking engagement.Charlie Kirk has called for the lynching of trans people, a...

A study suggests that cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins have the potential to reduce heart disease in people with obstructive sleep apnea, regardless of the use of CPAP machines during the night. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy improves sleep quality in people with obstructive sleep apnea. But CPAP does not improve heart health. Statins may be one such method, according to the study, by Sanja Jelic, MD. The researchers found that statins, but not CPAP, protected blood vessels against dangerous inflammatory changes that occur in people with the condition. The researchers looked specifically at the CD59 protein, which keeps inflammation...

CNBC host Jim Cramer just can’t stop saying dumb things. The Mad Money personality is now claiming the recent banking fiasco in the past week means the Federal Reserve is turning a corner on inflation. Cramer apparently hadn’t learned from the mockery he received for his horrific February call that Silicon Valley Bank was a buy at $320 a share before the stock collapsed a month later. During the March 14 edition of his CNBC show, Cramer fawned how he had been a big “supporter of Jay Powell, our Fed Chief” — the same person who tried to hoodwink Americans...
