RALEIGH, N.C. — Tens of thousands of people serving punishments for felony convictions in North Carolina but who aren’t behind bars can now register to vote and cast ballots this fall after an appeals court ruling. Expanding the scope of those able to register and vote began Wednesday, the State Board of Elections said — the day after local elections were held in more than a dozen localities. The change proceeds from litigation challenging a 1973 law that prevents someone convicted of a felony from having voting rights restored while they are still on probation, parole or post-release supervision. Jared Kushner alleges in his new memoir former Trump White House chief of staff John Kelly “shoved” his wife and the former president’s daughter Ivanka Trump following a contentious meeting. “One day he had just marched out of a contentious meeting in the Oval Office,” Kushner claims in the book. “Ivanka was walking down the main hallway in the West Wing when she passed him. Unaware of his heated state of mind, she said, ‘Hello, chief.’ Kelly shoved her out of the way and stormed by. She wasn’t hurt, and didn’t make a big deal about the altercation, but in...

A Georgia elementary school is under fire for its new logo that some parents insist resembles a Nazi symbol — prompting district officials to halt its rollout. The new logo for East Side Elementary in Marietta was unveiled Monday, depicting the school’s eagle mascot along with its initials in blue font. A message to parents said it was selected to “represent the eagle soaring into excellence,” as well as to honor the school’s history, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. But parents and other eagle-eyed observers, including some from the American Jewish Committee, quickly noted its “striking and uncomfortable” resemblance to the...

But a political era — that of the New Deal Democrats — is coming to its inglorious end.The University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics has a new poll out, and the numbers are pretty shocking — but not particularly surprising or even discouraging, if you understand the long view.As it happens, my new book, The Revivalist Manifesto, lays out that long view quite clearly, and you should of course buy your copy today. We’ll get to that in just a minute. In the meantime, here’s what the poll says:A majority of Americans say the U.S. government is corrupt and almost a...

US rate hikes are doing more to devastate Asian economies and currencies than tame US inflation and overheating ... The Fed’s hikes are their own nightmare for Xi Jinping’s China. Rising US rates put China’s giant export engine at risk. It complicates things for highly indebted mainland property developers struggling to avoid default. And then there’s the nearly US$1 trillion of state wealth parked in US government debt. The yen’s dwindling value – down 18% so far this year – is a crisis in slow motion for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda. Asia’s No...

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warned he’s ready to use his nuclear weapons in potential military conflicts with the United States and South Korea, state media said Thursday, as he unleashed fiery rhetoric against rivals he says are pushing the Korean Peninsula to the brink of war. Kim’s speech to war veterans on the 69th anniversary of the end of the 1950-53 Korean War was apparently meant to boost internal unity in the impoverished country amid pandemic-related economic difficulties. While Kim has increasingly threatened his rivals with nuclear weapons, it’s unlikely that he would...

John Binder of Breitbart News reported that House Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee have snuck in a Capitol Hill jobs plan for illegal aliens — all covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program — into a government funding package. DACA, which aimed to grant legal residency status to illegal aliens who were brought to the United States when they were children, was established under former President Barack Obama’s watch.
