RALEIGH, N.C. — Tens of thousands of people serving punishments for felony convictions in North Carolina but who aren’t behind bars can now register to vote and cast ballots this fall after an appeals court ruling.
Expanding the scope of those able to register and vote began Wednesday, the State Board of Elections said — the day after local elections were held in more than a dozen localities.
The change proceeds from litigation challenging a 1973 law that prevents someone convicted of a felony from having voting rights restored while they are still on probation, parole or post-release supervision.
More than 56,000 people in North Carolina were prevented from registering under the challenged law, according to evidence cited in a 2021 trial.
The voter registration expansion "means you've got a voice," Daryl Atkinson, the lead attorney for civil rights groups and ex-offenders who sued over the law in 2019, said while celebrating the change at an event behind the state Legislative Building in Raleigh. “Imagine if 56,000 had something to say. But they’re going to have something to say in November."
A panel of trial judges struck down the 1973 law in March, declaring it violates the state constitution largely because it discriminates against Black residents.

I can see getting your voting rights back AFTER serving time and parole but not during.
There is a solution to this: keep them behind bars to serve their sentences.

Just what we need - more judge-made law.
Additionally, the felon should also have zero balance on the court cost/restitution ledger also. Then I don’t see anything wrong with the felon voting or even owning firearms.

Heh, the Clintons, Kennedys, and Bidens are registered and vote. So, if professional felons can do this, we can allow the amateur felons do so. /s

If they are allowed to vote they should have their Second Amendment rights reinstated to them.

They probably won’t vote, though, but the dems will get their names and vote for them “for their convenience”. They did that to me in 2016 by putting in for an absentee ballot for me without my knowledge and tried again in 2020. My ‘16 in-person vote was never recorded. Thousands of legit votes for them to steal.
