So, you got a positive result on your home test for Covid-19. What do you do next? In addition to everything else on your plate — isolating and notifying close contacts, taking time off work and rescheduling appointments — it’s good practice to report your test results. And while home tests have made it easier and faster to screen yourself and get treatment, it is not always easy to report an illness. This confusion has meant that many cases are left out of official counts. If you test positive at a clinic or another community testing site, those results must...

A team of German and Kurdish archaeologists have uncovered a 3400-year-old Mittani Empire-era city once located on the Tigris River. The settlement emerged from the waters of the Mosul reservoir early this year as water levels fell rapidly due to extreme drought in Iraq. The extensive city with a palace and several large buildings could be ancient Zakhiku – believed to have been an important center in the Mittani Empire (ca. 1550-1350 BC)....The south of the country in particular has been suffering from extreme drought for months. To prevent crops from drying out, large amounts of water have been drawn...

"Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears." "How much do you charge?" "Eighty dollars per visit," replied the doctor. "I’ll sleep on it and if...

Michael Sussmann’s cozy relationship with the FBI was revealed during his two-week trial and in a new letter by congressional Republicans, shedding new light on the Hillary Clinton campaign lawyer’s close ties to the bureau as he pushed since-debunked Trump-Russia claims. Sussmann, a former Perkins Coie lawyer who represented the Democratic National Committee when it was hacked in 2016, was acquitted by a jury this week after being charged with lying to the FBI about whom he was representing when, in September 2016, he pushed false allegations of a secret back channel between the Trump Organization and Russia’s Alfa-Bank. NASA's Curiosity rover has a knack for snapping eye-opening pictures of the Gale Crater on Mars. There was the (actually very small) "doorway" recently and then a facelike cliff last year. The latest "wow, look at that" image to come to my attention shows two delicate, gravity-defying formations reaching upward from the dusty Martian surface. The SETI Institute -- a research organization focused on searching for life in the universe -- highlighted the image in a tweet last week, calling it a "cool rock." SETI offered a possible explanation for the fantastical shapes: "The spikes are most likely the cemented...

When incidents of defense against bears occur in the United States, a common position of bear apologists is to claim “bears were here first”, as if, somehow, a bear has moral authority over humans. A group that promotes the expansion of grizzly bear populations makes this claim, in a more sophisticated way. From conservationnw.org:Grizzly bears have coexisted with people in the North Cascades Ecosystem from when the first people arrived in North America. The most dangerous bear, the grizzly bear, was not in the lower 48 states before humans were. Humans were here first. The grizzly bear is a relative newcomer...

York County officials sent a clear message after GT Real Estate Holdings, LLC, announced Wednesday that it had filed for bankruptcy. Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper specifically formed GT Real Estate for the Rock Hill headquarters site off I-77, north of Dave Lyle Boulevard. On Thursday morning, York County issued a statement noting the bankruptcy protection lists the county as one of the creditors. That’s because of GT Real Estate’s and the county’s agreement to upgrade a section of Mt. Gallant Road bordering the new headquarters property, according to the county release. The county put up $21 million for the...

Instead of President Ronald Reagan saying ““Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” we need someone to tell President Biden and Federal Reserve Jerome Powell to “Stop driving up prices and making housing unaffordable.” Unfortunately, The Fed thinks that raising interest rates will temper price increases — it won’t. But it could tamper home price growth. So what we are left with is soaring home prices AND soaring mortgage rates, leaving this scary chart. The housing cost index has risen 114.5% under Biden. Its only going to get worse from here. Today’s jobs report for May showed that the U-3 unemployment...

A pair of Queens strippers who flaunted their lifestyles on social media were targeted by two decidedly anti-social armed bandits, prosecutors and sources said Friday. One of the well-to-do pair was the victim of 2021 home invasions — including one where she and her husband were zip-tied as the hoods aimed weapons at their children, authorities said. The two robbers are now in custody. Details of the two terrifying Queens apartment holdups emerged with the arrests of the bandits accused of fleeing with $79,000 cash in small bills — mostly singles — and $100,000 in high-end handbags in the first...

BATTLE-FIELD, Monday, June 2, 1862. The rebel army still occupied the camps of CAGEY'S and COUCH's Divisions on Sunday morning, with a strong picket force guarding the road facing SNEAD'S house and the wheat field where our earthworks were thrown up, extending from our extreme left to the railroad, near Fair Oak Station. The distance from the point where our earthworks were located to the edge of the wood could not have been more than four hundred yards. This position the rebels held until day dawned on Sunday morning. To our right, on the other side of the railroad, the...

Australia's federal police and Monash University are asking netizens to send in snaps of their younger selves to train a machine-learning algorithm to spot child abuse in photographs. Researchers are looking to collect images of people aged 17 and under in safe scenarios; they don't want any nudity, even if it's a relatively innocuous picture like a child taking a bath. The crowdsourcing campaign, dubbed My Pictures Matter, is open to those aged 18 and above, who can consent to having their photographs be used for research purposes. All the images will be amassed into a dataset in an attempt...
