Lemon Pickers Needed”, read the ad in the newspaper. Ms. Sally Mulligan of Coral Springs, Florida, read it and decided to apply for one of the jobs that most Americans are not willing to do. She submitted her application for a job in a Florida lemon grove but seemed far too qualified for the job. She has a liberal arts degree from the University of Michigan, and a master’s degree from Michigan State University. For a number of years, she had worked as a social worker, and also as a school teacher. The foreman studied her application, frowned, and said,...

Clotheslines with billowing linens and long dresses are a common sight on the off-grid farms of Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County, home to the nation’s largest Amish settlement. For many tourists they’re as iconic a part of Amish Country’s bucolic scenery as the rural lanes and wooden bridges. But for two days in late April, a clothesline with a different purpose was strung in a small indoor exhibit here. Hanging from it were 13 outfits representing the trauma of sexual assault suffered by members of the Amish, Mennonite and similar groups, a reminder that the modest attire they require, particularly of women...

Owen Jenkins is now hooking for Wales, just as his father did for more than a decadeHaving ploughed his own rugby path over the years, Owen Jenkins is now very much following in the footsteps of his old man. Owen’s career has up to now taken him down a different positional path, as a winger for Pontypridd, Cardiff Blues and the Dragons. ...cutting-edge DNA sequencing of more than 400 Viking skeletons from archaeological sites scattered across Europe and Greenland will rewrite the history books as it has shown:Skeletons from famous Viking burial sites in Scotland were actually local people who could have taken on Viking identities and were buried as Vikings. Many Vikings actually had brown hair not blonde hair.Viking identity was not limited to people with Scandinavian genetic ancestry. The study shows the genetic history of Scandinavia was influenced by foreign genes from Asia and Southern Europe before the Viking Age.Early Viking Age raiding parties were an activity for locals and included...

Tumors from desmoplastic melanoma, a rare cancer most commonly found on the head or neck, can often be shrunk significantly before surgery by an immunotherapy known as PD-1 blockade, a result that may reduce the need for disfiguring surgery and radiation. "This study suggests that up-front treatment may spare some from disfiguring surgeries," said Dr. Kendra. Desmoplastic melanoma is a rare form of malignant skin cancer that occurs on sun-exposed areas of the body. It's a cancer in which local relapse is common, so the standard of care is surgery with wide excision margins followed by radiation therapy. These wide...

San Francisco’s Lowell High School, regarded as one of the best in the nation, is seeing a record spike in Ds and Fs among its first batch of students admitted in fall 2021 through a new lottery system instead of its decades-long merit-based admissions. This marks a triple increase from 7.9% in fall 2020 and 7.7% in fall 2019. The lottery system...

Using the controversial CRISPR technology, researchers at Northwestern University were examining a hormone called vasopressin and its receptor, Avpr1a. They opted to try and remove the latter from a group of Syrian hamsters, with the expectation it would increase bonding and co-operation between the lovable little critters. ***** The academics found the adorable bundles of fluff turned into mutant rage monsters exhibiting ‘high levels of aggression towards other same-sex individuals’. All hamsters, regardless of genotype or sex, exhibited aggression (including chasing, biting, and pinning) when exposed to a nonaggressive, same-sex conspecific in a neutral arena.

Uvalde's school district police chief is under fire for refusing to let his officers engage the active shooter at Robb Elementary School, after the gunman barricaded himself in a classroom as kids cowered inside and called 911. During a bombshell presser Friday, Texas Department of Public Safety head Steven McCraw slammed Chief Pete Arredondo for failing to engage 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, mistakenly believing the teen had finished his killing spree and was hiding out from cops. 'With the benefit of hindsight, from where I'm sitting now, of course it was not the right decision. It was the wrong decision, period,'...

Considering Black Sabbath are largely responsible for inventing heavy metal as we know it, Butler’s remarks are intriguing. In his estimation, the label “heavy metal” was used in a slightly derogatory context in early 1970s and Black Sabbath got “stuck with it.” “When we were on tour in America — I think it was the second tour in the [United] States — I read this review, and the guy said, ‘This isn’t music; it sounds like a bunch of heavy metal being smashed together.'” Geezer recalled in a new interview with Eddie Trunk. “Somehow that got over to England, and...

China has been teetering on the precipice of an economic crisis for quite some time now. Structural issues within the country’s financial system and the protracted lockdowns of essential hubs, ports and even entire provinces resulted in supply chain disruptions, slowed economic growth and generalized unrest throughout the country. And because economic vitality is the basis of the Communist Party of China’s power, these circumstances pose a threat to government stability. Until now, President Xi Jinping has managed to consolidate power such that he could remain China’s ruler for life. But his failure in navigating new challenges has put his...
