During the “Overtime” segment of his “Real Time” show on Friday, Bill Maher expressed concern over massive levels of government debt, said that we’re not in a pandemic anymore, and stated that it’s questionable whether we should have had such a drastic response to the pandemic when there are legitimate arguments that lockdowns had no real impact. Maher stated, “Well, we have problems we haven’t had in a very long time like inflation. And certainly, we have been running up the debt, but not the levels that we have in recent years where we just sort of went, oh, numbers...

Patients with advanced melanoma whose cancer does not respond to treatment with widely used immunotherapy drugs known as PD-1 inhibitors are often switched to treatment with a second type of immunotherapy drug—a CTLA-4 inhibitor such as ipilimumab. New results from show that these patients are more likely to benefit from ipilimumab when it is given in combination with the PD-1 inhibitor nivolumab than when given alone. Patients in the study who got an ipilimumab and nivolumab combination had longer progression-free survival (PFS) time than patients who were treated with ipilimumab alone (six-month PFS estimates of 34% vs 13%). The overall...

Beijing believes U.S. could turn to nuclear weapons in a war; Ukraine invasion underscores the value of a robust arsenalChina has accelerated an expansion of its nuclear arsenal because of a change in its assessment of the threat posed by the U.S., people with knowledge of the Chinese leadership’s thinking say, shedding new light on a buildup that is raising tension between the two countries. The Chinese nuclear effort long predates Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but the U.S.’s wariness about getting directly involved in the war there has likely reinforced Beijing’s decision to put greater emphasis on developing nuclear weapons as...

It is often said that when something controversial is being pounded into the public via media headlines, there is something else that is going on behind the scenes that the public is being distracted from. This is certainly the case with Americaâs education system. While the public has been hammered with a full-frontal assault by activists pushing Critical Race Theory and gender ideology in the schools overtly, there has also been a covert assault from the flank called Social-Emotional Learning or SEL. Social-Emotional Learning supposedly arose out of the COVID-19 pandemic and a need to attend to the emotional psyches...

Very often, when companies go woke, it turns out that the wokeness is a cover for changing market forces. That is, they're not alienating traditional demographics; they're reflecting that their money is coming from new demographics. When it comes to Hollywood and the NBA, for example, the big bucks are coming from China, not America. And when it comes to Disney, the main profit center isn't children; it's young adults who, Peter Pan–like, refuse to grow up. The brilliant Daniel Greenfield makes this point in an article entitled "Disney's Business Model is Turning Kids into Dysfunctional Adults: Its customer base...

A large part of woke ideology revolves around the unrealistic idea that we should construct a society where no one’s feelings are hurt. It is not a value judgment to say that trans men and women fall outside of standard biological norms. The flaw in woke ideology is the belief that the bad feelings this statement creates in those individuals can and should be of paramount importance. It is one thing to ensure that trans men and women are protected from discrimination. It is another to attempt to eliminate the real and necessary cultural distinctions of man and woman to...

As the staging ground for an assault on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, one of the most toxic places on earth, was probably not the best choice. But that did not seem to bother the Russian generals who took over the site in the early stages of the war. “We told them not to do it, that it was dangerous, but they ignored us,” Valeriy Simyonov, the chief safety engineer for the Chernobyl nuclear site, said in an interview. Apparently undeterred by safety concerns, the Russian forces tramped about the grounds with bulldozers and tanks, digging...

Digital rights advocates are accusing the EU of working to create the world’s biggest biometric surveillance infrastructure, thanks to a proposal known as “Prüm II.” The original Prüm Convention was signed in 2005 by Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Spain, outside of the EU’s framework – but “open” to the bloc’s other member countries, 14 out of 27 of which have since joined. The treaty is meant to increase cross-border cooperation in tackling crime and terrorism. What this has meant so far is that the parties to the treaty have been collecting, processing, and sharing data like...
