President Joe Biden's apparent call for Vladimir Putin's exit reverberated instantly around the world, sparking an administration rush to course-correct -- and risks scrambling US efforts to rally a united front on the Ukraine conflict. Biden's comment that the Russian president "cannot remain in power" -- delivered in Warsaw at the close of three days of marathon diplomacy -- was termed "a horrendous gaffe" by one Republican senator. A senior US analyst said it could have the effect of lengthening the war. And even France's president warned such language could "escalate" a conflict the United States and its NATO allies...

In 2020, we saw more lawsuits filed over election laws and rule changes than in any prior year of American history. And with the congressional midterms fast approaching, litigation and other developments just keep coming. Pennsylvania In Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth Court, one of two appellate courts in the state, issued a ruling recently holding that a change made by the legislature in 2019 to the law governing absentee ballots violated the state constitution. *** In 2019, the legislature amended state law that required a qualified voter to have a reason to use an absentee ballot and turned Pennsylvania into a...

Amid Europe’s largest land war since World War II, 7 in 10 Americans expressed low confidence in President Biden’s ability to deal with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in a new NBC News poll, and 8 in 10 voiced worry that the war will increase gas prices and possibly involve nuclear weapons. And during the nation’s largest inflation spike in 40 years, overwhelming majorities said they believe the country is headed in the wrong direction and disapproved of the president’s handling of the economy. The erosion in Biden’s approval rating has been across the board among key demographic groups, including Black...

The pushback continues against Joe Biden’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) rules, put into place in February to consider greenhouse gas emissions and “vulnerable” communities when permitting natural gas pipelines, including criticism from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV).

COVID-19 has laid bare stark health care disparities between Black and Hispanics and their white counterparts. According to the CDC, these communities have borne the brunt of the pandemic, with cases and deaths nationally exceeding their share of the population. Here in New York, as a physician working for Weill Cornell Medicine, I witnessed this firsthand. On the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where Weill Cornell Medicine is located, mortality rates from COVID-19 were lower than in other parts of the city, particularly upper Manhattan and the Bronx, historically under-resourced areas where the population is largely Black and Hispanic. In...

Last week, the Senate voted on the 2,741-page omnibus spending package, clocking in at a whopping $1.5 trillion. It was released in the middle of the night, just hours before we were expected to vote on it. Mind you, when we vote on things, we’re expected to know what we’re voting on. At least that’s the expectation of the folks we represent back home. But do you really think there is a single person in the United States who actually believes that Congress is filled with speed readers capable of digesting thousands of pages in a matter of hours? Probably...

Everyone has a theory about the decline of the Academy Awards, the sinking ratings that have led to endless Oscar reinventions. The show is too long; no, the show is too desperate to pander to short attention spans. The movies are too woke; no, the academy voters aren’t diverse enough. Hollywood makes too many superhero movies; no, the academy doesn’t nominate enough superhero movies. (A querulous voice from the back row: Why can’t they just bring back Billy Crystal?) My favored theory is that the Oscars are declining because the movies they were made to showcase have been slowly disappearing....

How did Mussolini lose power? On July 25, 1943, Benito Mussolini, fascist dictator of Italy, is voted out of power by his own Grand Council and arrested upon leaving a meeting with King Vittorio Emanuele, who tells Il Duce that the war is lost. How did Mussolini die? On April 28, 1945, “Il Duce,” Benito Mussolini, and his mistress, Clara Petacci, are shot by Italian partisans who had captured the couple as they attempted to flee to Switzerland. Can History Repeat Itself?

“‘You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house’” (Matthew 5:13–15). With great responsibility, there is often great danger. We can’t be an influence for purity in...

There, right in your face, is a door that seems to be continually locked. This closed door I am speaking about is some issue, situation or need you’ve been praying about for a long time. It may be a crisis that requires nothing less than a miracle. I don’t know what your closed door may be, but you’ve prayed for the door of opportunity to open, yet everything you try seems to fail. The doors simply don’t open. For many Christians, it seems both the windows and doors of heaven are closed. The heavens seem like brass, and you haven’t...

Nature can be a force to be reckoned with, especially the dangers that lurk in Florida waters. While most people probably think of alligators first, it was the mud that proved to be most dangerous for one wayward dog this week. On Wednesday morning, a local good Samaritan spotted the dog, which appeared to be an elderly golden retriever, in water and mud along a canal. Golden retrievers are notorious for their love of the water, but this one had bitten off a little more than he could chew. While he was alive, he wasn’t moving and seemed to be...

ROME — Pope Francis renewed his appeal for an end to war Sunday, condemning the “bestiality” of the Russian war on Ukraine. “More than a month has passed since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, since the beginning of this cruel and senseless war which, like any war, represents a defeat for all, for all of us,” the pontiff told the 30,000 pilgrims gathered in the Vatican for his weekly Angelus address. “There is a need to repudiate war, a place of death where fathers and mothers bury their children, where men kill their brothers without even having seen...
