And the nominees are … The 2022 Academy Awards are almost upon us — the night when A-list actors, singers and other members of the Hollywood elite will descend upon the steps of the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles next month. While the telecast is set to air on March 27 on ABC, the nominations were announced by Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross on Feb. 8. The pair revealed the nominees across 23 categories in the announcement, which streamed on the Oscars website and the Film Academy’s social media accounts.

As the anti-pandemic rule protest in Ottawa continues into its second week, many residents in the downtown core say they have been living a nightmare, constantly under siege and with many terrified to leave their homes — except to seek refuge elsewhere. Residents described being bombarded by relentless honking, fireworks, being choked by diesel fumes, seeing hate symbols openly displayed, subjected to racial, homophobic and transphobic slurs, attacked for wearing masks, and feeling let down by all levels of government and police since the first vehicles set up Jan. 28. While there may be some reprieve to the horns after...

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Lawmakers in the Vermont House of Representatives are scheduled to vote Tuesday on a proposal to amend the state constitution to protect reproductive rights, including abortion. If approved, the proposal will go before state voters in November, the final step needed to amend the Vermont constitution. Supporters of the proposal say it enshrines the right for individuals to make their own reproductive decisions. Opponents say the proposal is vaguely worded and could have unintended consequences. Vermont’s proposed amendment does not contain the word “abortion.” Proponents say that’s because it’s not meant to authorize only abortion, but...

DETROIT - Hyundai and Kia are telling the owners of nearly 485,000 vehicles in the U.S. to park them outdoors because they can catch fire even when stopped. The recalls from the two Korean automakers are another in a long string of fire and engine failure problems that have dogged the companies for the past six years. This time the problem is contamination in the antilock brake control module that can cause an electrical short. Affected are certain Kia Sportage SUVs from 2014 through 2016, and the 2016 through 2018 K900 sedan. Recalled Hyundais include certain 2016 through 2018 Santa...

Key factors contributing to the current heightened threat environment include: The proliferation of false or misleading narratives, which sow discord or undermine public trust in U.S. government institutions: For example, there is widespread online proliferation of false or misleading narratives regarding unsubstantiated widespread election fraud and COVID-19. Grievances associated with these themes inspired violent extremist attacks during 2021. Malign foreign powers have and continue to amplify these false or misleading narratives in efforts to damage the United States.

NEW YORK (AP) — Not satisfied with urging fellow musicians to leave Spotify, Neil Young wants the company’s employees to jump ship, too. In a message posted on his website Monday, Young said to Spotify employees that company CEO Daniel Ek is a bigger problem than Joe Rogan, who has stirred outcry over vaccine skepticism and his past use of racial slurs on his podcast. “Ek pulls the strings,” Young said. “Get out of that place before it eats up your soul. The only goals stated by Ek are about numbers — not art, not creativity.”

You tend to Harvest what you sow. Not Neil Young, he was lucky. Despite a 40 plus year drug and alcohol fueled musical careerNeil Young grew up to be a reformed substance abuser (Imus would have called him a dry drunk, and he would know) who feels that making one smart decision in his entire life - when faced with the choice of quitting drugs and alcohol or imminent death he chose life: bully for him. He now lives under the illusion that this one smart thing makes him an expert on everything.Still crazy after all these yearsNeil Young takes...

John Williams, the man who changed the way we hear the movies, turns 90 today. As the key Hollywood composer during the blockbuster era of the 1970s and 1980s, Williams had an astronomical career alongside the likes of filmmakers Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. With his music for their movies, Williams revived the romantic orchestral sound of Hollywood's Golden Age — the sound pioneered by composers Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Max Steiner at the dawn of the talkies — and reinvented it for a new era. “John Williams has been the single most significant contributor to my success as a...

Three-year-old Lyla attends private day care four days a week. Alexis Telep says her daughter has developed a "constant cough" that she believes began when the mask mandates started. (There is no independent evidence that the masking caused the child's cough.) "Her teachers tell her she spits germs at everybody without the mask on," Telep said. "So she comes home and doesn’t want to take the mask off." The girl "even wears it to bed, for fear of making someone else sick." Telep said her daughter, as a result of all the masking, now considers herself "a walking germ."

There are between 400 and 500 vehicles illegally parked downtown, and the the tow truck operators on contract to the city won't move them. (Adrian Wyld/The Canadian Press) The tow trucks operators on contract to the City of Ottawa are taking a hard pass on requests to haul vehicles out of protest areas, according to the city's top public servant. "I've contacted them all and they're all refusing, as of today, to provide heavy tow truck work," city manager Steve Kanellakos told reporters Monday evening after a six-hour special council meeting. "Right now we're reviewing their contracts or standing offer,...

Yesterday, Allahpundit pointed out one of the early cracks in the blue wall of support for mask mandates, particularly in public schools. New Jersey’s governor seemed to be ready to throw in the towel and stop fighting public sentiment on the issue. Well, shortly after that, the push to put an end to the mandates appeared to start spreading faster than the Omicron variant. Three more blue state governors joined Phil Murphy in saying that mandates would be coming to an end either this month or in March. Oregon, Connecticut, and Delaware jumped on the bandwagon, with the governors of...

Workers of the world unite. You have nothing to lose but your chains. That's from Karl Marx, of course. He wrote that famous phrase in 1848. The weird thing is, it's pretty likely that Marx himself never met an actual worker. Wait a second. He didn't spend a decade in a cotton mill, witnessing the oppression firsthand. No. Karl Marx never spent a moment in a factory. He was a rich kid who became a journalist. Of course he was. But for more than 150 years, Karl Marx inspired generations of other rich kids who also became journalists to repeat...

Thinking of buying a car? Kimberly Walker, a mother of two in Columbia, S.C., can tell you exactly what that's like these days. She recently found herself having to shop for two vehicles on opposite ends of the market. For herself, she wanted a late-model electric Audi, and after looking around, she was able to find a used 2021 e-tron at a local dealership. The price? An eye-popping $68,000 with no room to negotiate. "We went back and forth. We were there for four hours," she says. "They did not budge on that price." For her teenage daughter, Walker was...

Several Republican senators have criticized the Republican National Committee (RNC) for voting to censure Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger on Friday. Some prominent members of the Senate GOP took aim at the decision in comments over the past few days and suggested it wasn't a way to unify the Republican Party. The criticism comes in a crucial midterm election year, in which Republicans are hoping to take back the Senate and the House of Representatives, and as the House Select Committee's investigation of the events of January 6, 2021, is ongoing.

Ever since this show began in the early 70s as a summer replacement for The Brady Bunch, we were on top of one trend: Cancel culture. The idea being, if your past isn't adaptable to current standards, you would lose your friends, social status, Netflix password and career. You'd be shunned from polite society. Its kindred spirit was wokeism, political correctness on more steroids than Lance Armstrong, which allowed no forgiveness relating not just to your past actions, but to who you are. Generally, it's things that can't be changed, like your race or Pete Davidson's bedsheets. In the world...

In 2008, Rick Warren, the pastor of the California megachurch Saddleback, hosted the Civil Forum on the Presidency between the two presidential candidates, Barack 0bama and John McCain. Later, Obama asked Warren to deliver the prayer at his inauguration. Of course, many on the left side of the cultural spectrum attacked 0bama’s choice of Warren to deliver the prayer. But Christians also went after Warren for his association with Obama’s inauguration. I’ll admit I’m not all that familiar with the optics of a move such as Warren made. But the way I figure it, even if Bubba asks me to...
