MI5 has issued a rare warning that an alleged Chinese agent has infiltrated Parliament to interfere in UK politics. An alert from the security service said Christine Ching Kui Lee "established links" for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with current and aspiring MPs. She then gave donations to politicians, with funding coming from foreign nationals in China and Hong Kong. It comes after a "significant, long-running" investigation by MI5, Whitehall sources told the BBC. One of the MPs funded by Ms Lee was Labour's Barry Gardiner, who received over £420,000 from her in five years - but he said he...

A subvariant of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, known as BA2, has arrived in Israel and 20 cases of it have already been detected in the country, Kan 11 News reported on Thursday. According to the report, BA2 is currently known to have even more mutations than the original Omicron, and as such, some scientists around the world have speculated that it may be more violent. However, at the moment this is only a hypothesis, and it is important to note that there is no absolute certainty and knowledge about this. The subspecies was first seen in China a few...

In separate remarks Thursday, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris made clear that the White House plans to double down on the failed policies that have led to an explosion of COVID-19 cases across the United States, and an increase in fatalities. During a one-on-one interview with TODAY’s Craig Melvin, Harris was asked if the administration plans to change its strategy since what they’ve been doing—vaccine mandates, mask mandates, suppression of early treatments—is clearly not working. “Six former administration officials wrote an open letter urging the administration to change course, to change strategy,” Melvin said. “Is it time?” Judging from the...

Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. Explanation: It's easy to get lost following the intricate, looping, twisting filaments in this detailed image of supernova remnant Simeis 147. Also cataloged as Sharpless 2-240 it goes by the popular nickname, the Spaghetti Nebula. Seen toward the boundary of the constellations Taurus and Auriga, it covers nearly 3 degrees or 6 full moons on the sky. That's about 150 light-years at the stellar debris cloud's estimated distance of 3,000 light-years. This composite includes...

On this episode of The Resistance Library, Sam and David discuss the Battle of the Bulge. When we think about American GIs in the European theater of World War II, much of our image comes from the Battle of the Bulge. Named so because of the distinctive "bulge" shape of the front lines, this is where so many American men laid down their lives on fields of frozen mud in France.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will update its guidance concerning masks in due time, CDC director Rochelle Walensky suggested during Wednesday’s press briefing. During the briefing, which featured members of the White House coronavirus response team, as well as public health officials, Walensky responded to a reporter asking why the CDC is not recommending Americans to wear masks that are more effective, such as N95s over a surgical mask or cloth masks, which studies show only filter out roughly ten percent of exhaled aerosols.

... but Australia seems prone to allowing the frenzy of the mob (and about the Mob, about which more later) to affect the course of justice.... Consider two Aussie criminal trials that garnered global attention, those of Lindy Chamberlain and George Pell. Chamberlain’s was the famous 1980s “dingo” case, where she was convicted of murdering her infant daughter in the wilderness... The Chamberlains were Seventh Day Adventists and their minority religious faith was used to whip up public indignation against them.... Even at the time of the original trial it was evident that the prosecution case was incompetent and unprofessional....

Egyptian Pope Distances Himself From Francis’ "Abrahamic Religion"The [Francis’] idea of an Abrahamic Religion comprising Judaism, Christianity and Islam indiscriminately is “categorically unacceptable,” Coptic Pope Tawadros II told the Egyptian state TV (January 7).The concept of "Abrahamic Religion" denies the three monotheistic religions, Tawadros explains. For him, this is a "political idea" used to blur the differences between Judaism, Christianity and Islam.Religions are “like colours, cannot be changed or replaced by innovation or adding false information to the constants of a given religion,” Tawadros explained. He further declared that the priesthood is reserved for men only, according to Christ's will who...

Those remarks weren’t just vintage Trump braggadocio. They’re likely also smart politics, as they provide an opening to win back some suburban voters that fled from him toward Biden in 2020. Sixty-seven percent of suburban residents were vaccinated as of August, according to a late summer NBC News poll. That was below the 79 percent of urban residents who got the vaccine, but well above the 52 percent of rural residents, where support for Trump runs deep. Even Biden gave credit to the Trump administration for the development of the Covid vaccine and for getting a booster shot. It’s unclear that...

If you were to ask any of the 1 million Americans living with multiple sclerosis, they’d probably say their disease started with changes so small they almost didn’t notice them: a wobbly step, a weakening grip, sight going soft around the edges. But MRI scans of their brains — dotted with ghostly white scars — would tell a different story. Those scars are signs of inflammation dating back multiple years. Each spot represents a dead zone filled with mangled remains of thousands, sometimes millions, of neurons. Like city blocks going dark during a power outage, these cells blinked out one...

MSNBC anchor Andrea Mitchel said Thursday “Katy Tur Reports” that Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) “completely embarrassed” President Joe Biden by giving a speech on the Senate floor opposing changing the filibuster ahead of Biden meeting with the Senate Democrats on Capitol Hill. Mitchel said, “Kyrsten Sinema did something that is extraordinary. Yes, anyone who was reading her body language had to know where she came down on this. She made no secret of it, but she wasn’t openly publicly verbal about it. But she went to the floor of the Senate within an hour of president coming up there to...

Just under five years ago more than half of the Democrats currently in the Senate signed a letter defending the 60-vote filibuster on legislation – but now many of them are leading the charge to eliminate it as soon as this weekend. "Reality changed," Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, said when asked what is different in 2022 compared with 2017, when she was among the signers of the letter led by Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Chris Coons, D-Del. -------------- Sen. Mazie Hirono said "reality changed" between 2017 and 2022, which is why she now opposes the Senate filibuster. (AP Photo/Julio...

Pope Francis: Synodality is Not a ‘Search for Majority Consensus’“Let us remember, in this regard, that synodality is not a simple discussion. It is not an ‘adjective.’ Never ‘adjectivize’ the substantiality of life.”VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis said on Thursday that synodality is not a “search for majority consensus,” but rather a “style” guided by the Holy Spirit. The Pope made the remark in an address to a delegation of French Catholic Action groups at the Vatican on Jan. 13. “The Church as a whole is also engaged in a synodal process, and I count on your contribution,” he...

A University of Calgary study has found promising results for the generic drug hydroxychloroquine when used to treat the evolution of disability of primary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS), the least treatable form of the autoimmune disease. MS affects about 90,000 Canadians with about 15 percent of those diagnosed with primary progressive MS, one of the highest rates in the world. Research teams led by Dr. Marcus Koch, MD. found hydroxychloroquine helped to slow the worsening of disability during the 18-month study. "With primary progressive MS, there is no good treatment to stop or reverse the progression of disease. The disability...

Florida lawmakers are debating a bill that would allow schools districts to put cameras in classrooms and microphones on teachers. The measure was proposed by state Representative Bob Rommel, a Republican from Naples. "I think if we can do it in a safe way to protect the privacy of students and teachers, I think we should do it," he told CBS Miami. "I haven't heard a response good or bad from any teachers, but … it's not their private space. It's our children's space, too." But Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco told the station a handful of Broward County...
