Florida lawmakers are debating a bill that would allow schools districts to put cameras in classrooms and microphones on teachers.
The measure was proposed by state Representative Bob Rommel, a Republican from Naples.
"I think if we can do it in a safe way to protect the privacy of students and teachers, I think we should do it," he told CBS Miami. "I haven't heard a response good or bad from any teachers, but … it's not their private space. It's our children's space, too."
But Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco told the station a handful of Broward County Public Schools already has them.
"That is happening right now," she said, though under limited circumstances.
According to the Broward County Public Schools website, parents of a student can request that a camera system with visual and audio capability be placed in a classroom if the student has a disability and is an individualized program in which the majority of students has a disability. That's permitted under Florida House Bill 149, which was passed in July.

The creepy teachers probably have cameras in the bathrooms.
YES...This IS needed.
Private daycares for children do this?
Nursing homes?
Jails?
Another bad idea that has become necessary.
If we are at the point where public school teachers need to be filmed and taped, then there is no hope for public schools.
This is actually protection for both students and teachers. This is done many places now and prevents bogus lawsuits from parents or staff looking to make an easy buck from false accusations, as well as document real problem activity.
When I was teaching Engineer Tech, I would have loved cameras in the classroom. Paying attention would be up and discipline problems and test cheating would go down, although to be fair I submitted only one test cheating suspension in 2 years, and all the discipline issues the parents ended up agreeing me on after the parent teacher conference. Basically if I sent you to the office, you had truly screwed up. The teachers that were political animals or not bothering to teach would have hated the cameras.
I taught for many years in urban public schools. And I would have LOVED to have had cameras and microphones in my classroom. And I’m guessing that 90% of my fellow teachers would have agreed with me.
As for that other 10%, shape up or ship out.
I’m actually okay with this.
I’m a teacher, and I encounter some shocking behavior from students. I keep my politics out of the classrom altogether, although we have mostly left-leaning teachers who do impose their views, we also have one real hard right teacher who is an obnoxious jerk.
Sadly, it’s come to this. But honestly, if it slows the left down some, but also keeps the obnoxious behavior in check, I’m good with it.
This is a WIN - WIN Proposition
It shows parents what the teachers are teaching and the quality or lack of education being provided.
It also shows the parents when YOUR kid is being disruptive in class. Or is spending time playing on their phones instead of paying attention.
Parents of the classes should have the right to access all the video of classes their child attends.
“Florida bill would allow cameras in classrooms and microphones on teachers”
And when this was announced 3 Teachers’ Unions officials died of Cardiac arrest
We are at that point, the sleazy and smarmy libtards are the majority of teachers. I worked with one teacher that was an department head that usually screwed his way through the staff that were so inclined. When one caught him screwing around on her, and raised a stink where some students overheard it. She ended up being fired. Then it came out his live in had several felony convictions, and he was using her as the female chaperone on student teacher trips. He ended up getting promoted about 3 years later. When the teacher was fired he asked what I thought about Mxxx’s firing. I told him at any major company HR would have walked him out the door for screwing around with subordinates. My contract was not renewed. And as an older white male with real world experience versus an education degree the teachers union cared squat about me. What a cesspool.
bravo desantis
I don't like this surveillance society but we've come to the point unless you have proof on video everything is suspect and in dispute. Video saved Rittenhouse. Video convicted Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael, and William "Roddie" Bryan.
Let’s require teachers to wear body cams, to monitor any potential misconduct, like they do to Police.
And record the classes and save them for a year, in case someone complains about political indoctrination.
The school administrators would control access to playback of the recordings which is expected. But I wonder how parents are able to view recordings. For example if Johnny says the teachers were doing xyz can the parents view the session?
I have no problem with it but wonder how details like that will be dealt with.
They’ve forced it on cops. Why not teachers?
Sunshine is the best disinfectant.
Yes. filming teachers is a fake, cosmetic "fix" which will only show good teachers how bad things have become, while being ignored by bad teachers.
Again, if our public schools have become that awful then 1) get one's own kids out, 2) government should refund all taxes paid by parents who choose other options, and 3) radically-decentralize every school district, so that parents are forced to take control.
Just need to change ‘would allow’ to ‘require’.
