Florida continued its record-shattering week for COVID-19 infections, reporting nearly 76,000 new daily cases on Friday as testing and hospitalizations in the state also continued to increase. The 75,962 new cases reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention once again set a daily record for Florida and brought the state's total to 4,165,962 since the pandemic began in March of 2020. Thanks mostly to the fast-spreading omicron variant and an increase in testing, Florida has set records all week for daily cases, with 58,013 reported Thursday, 52,995 reported Wednesday, 33,567 on Tuesday and 29,129 on Monday. Two thirds of the 25 staff based at Belgium’s Princess Elisabeth Polar Station have caught the virus, the Le Soir newspaper reported, proving there is no escape from the global pandemic. The outbreak took hold despite all staff passing multiple PCR tests, quarantining and living in one of the most remote places in the world. The situation has echoes of the plot of John Carpenter’s 1982 horror classic The Thing, which was advertised on posters with the warning “man is the warmest place to hide.” An alien life form infects workers on an Antarctic station in the cult sci-fi thriller...

A significant proportion of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in recent weeks were admitted for other reasons, according to health officials and government data. The exact scale of the phenomenon in the US is not recorded in federal statistics, but has been noted anecdotally. And Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical adviser to the White House, described the phenomenon, specifically in children, in a Wednesday night interview with MSNBC. Since all hospital admissions are tested for COVID-19, Fauci said, many are "hospitalized with COVID, as opposed to because of COVID." The real reason for hospitalization might be "a broken leg, or...

Angelotta, 43, worked at a ski shop at the Northstar California Resort and told friends he was going skiing before meeting them for Christmas dinner, the Sheriff’s Office said. One of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) staffers called Israel a “racist European ethnostate built on stolen land” in one of his social media posts. Hussain Altamimi is a legislative assistant to Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, who joined the office last month. He reportedly shared a picture of himself with the Congresswoman on Instagram, adding the caption, “New beginnings,” in November. In a Christmas Eve Instagram story, Altamimi wrote, “Israel is a racist European ethnostate built on stolen land from its indigenous population!” His caption was...

“Mary and Joseph, Did You Know?” (Luke 2:40-52) Every year when the radio stations start playing Christmas music--like, when, around November 1? And then they stop playing Christmas music right on Christmas Day, when the Christmas season is just beginning, when there are eleven more days of Christmas still to go. But I digress. So, when the radio stations start playing Christmas music, there’s a song you will hear--oh, about 157 times--called “Mary, Did You Know?” And every time I hear it, I want to shout back at the radio, “Yes, of course she knew! The angel Gabriel told her!”...

Explanation: This timelapse gif tracks the James Webb Space Telescope as it streaks across the stars of Orion on its journey to a destination beyond the Moon. Recorded on December 28, 12 consecutive exposures each 10 minutes long were aligned and combined with a subsequent color image of the background stars to create the animation. About 2.5 days after its December 25 launch, JWST cruised past the altitude of the Moon's orbit as it climbed up the gravity ridge from Earth to reach a halo orbit around L2, an Earth-Sun Lagrange point. Lagrange points are convenient locations in space where...

More than 2.4 million COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the US in the past week – the most since the pandemic began, according to new data. The new statistic beats out the previous record of just over the 2 million cases recorded almost exactly a year ago for the seven days between Dec. 26, 2020, through Jan. 1, 2021 — and comes amid the fast-paced spread of the highly-contagious Omicron variant, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

"Squad" queen Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., suggested Friday that Republican critics are motivated by "sexual frustrations" due to the fact that "they can't date" the left-wing congresswoman. The New York Democrat made the claim in response to online criticism she faced after reports revealed she had traveled to Miami with her boyfriend before the new year. "If Republicans are mad they can’t date me they can just say that instead of projecting their sexual frustrations onto my boyfriend’s feet," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Friday in response to former Trump campaign advisor Steve Cortes, who had taken a shot at her boyfriend's...

A lawyer representing Jim Hoft’s website The Gateway Pundit’s sent a letter to Peters declaring, in no uncertain terms, that the publication’s founder and editor-in-chief Jim Hoft is not affiliated with a “satanic pedophilia cabal,” according to a press release from The Stew Peters Show. In Hoft’s version of events, per his lawyer, Peters accused Hoft of being a member of a “satanic pedophilia cabal” during this interview, and modified The Gateway Pundit’s logo to include an FBI-identified image representing attraction toward young boys. Among other inconsistencies, as Peters noted in a press release, the podcast host never said those...

This was CNN cognitive dissonance on steroids -- with a booster shot of hypocrisy. Picture this. In its 7 am hour, New Day brought on CNN medical analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner who called the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration a potential "superspreader" event that is "completely unnecessary" and "unwise." Reiner called omicron "the most contagious pathogen that any of us have ever seen," estimating the true number of daily infections at one million. But the very next hour of New Day contained a long, hyper-excited, promo for . . . CNN's Times Square New Year's Eve special! CNN entertainment correspondent...
