(Chiabella James/Warner Bros) ============================================================================ Dune, the epic series of sci-fi books by Frank Herbert, now turned into a movie of the same name, is set in the far future on the desert planet of Arrakis. Herbert outlined a richly detailed world that, at first glance, seems so real we could imagine ourselves within it. However, if such a world did exist, what would it actually be like? We are scientists with specific expertise in climate modelling, so we simulated the climate of Arrakis to find out. We wanted to know if the physics and environment of such a world would...

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) was caught maskless at a Washington, D.C. cocktail bar Friday night, just hours before pulling out of Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe's door-knocking campaign scheduled for the following morning, in her latest violation of COVID-19 policies. Video obtained by The Washington Free Beacon shows Whitmer maskless in the standing-room-only section of the crowded bar at the Hotel Washington. A hotel employee told the news outlet that bar guests must wear face coverings when not actively eating or drinking, neither of which Whitmer was doing. Several people congregating near her, however, were wearing masks. The...

On Tuesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “New Day,” Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) responded to a question on how Democrats are addressing concerns about the economy and inflation by stating he wishes reporting would mention that the reconciliation bill is paid for. During a discussion on the spending bills, co-host John Berman asked, “How are Democrats addressing what are growing concerns among the American people, A. about the economy, but B. about inflation and prices, just getting out of this pandemic?”

A Catholic American president will travel to Rome this Friday to meet with Pope Francis. There is a very profound and obvious issue they could discuss: Is it OK for a politician of any religious faith, or even none at all, to violate the natural law and support the deliberate killing of unborn babies? resident Joe Biden unambiguously supports legalized abortion and forcing taxpayers to pay for it. That puts him at odds not just with his church but with the founding principle of his country. "We hold these truths to be self-evident," says the Declaration of Independence, "that all...

On Tuesday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “The Story,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said the U.S. is “relying upon the Taliban to help us prevent an attack by ISIS on the United States.” Because of the inability to conduct legitimate over-the-horizon counterterrorism, and “We’re relying on a terrorist organization to police two terrorist groups.”

In VA Governor Race, Culture War Comes to the Fore .By Philip Wegmann - RCP StaffOctober 27, 2021 In VA Governor Race, Culture War Comes to the Fore(AP Photo/Alex Brandon) Three days apart in Virginia, two presidents sounded similar themes. On Saturday, it was former President Obama who made fun of Glen Youngkin as a goofy “fleece-wearing guy,” symbolism that President Biden further cribbed on Tuesday to knock the Republican candidate for governor. Obama had tried tying Youngkin to the stolen-election conspiracy theories that led to the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6; Biden also argued that Youngkin was complicit...

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) said Tuesday on MSNBC’s “All In” that a “predication” existed to pursue an investigation into whether members of Congress were delaying certification of the 2020 presidential election results to keep a “time window open” to allow the mob to enter the Capitol on January 6.

A misstep could spur global chaos, both economic and political.. China's economy — the 2nd-largest in the world — is teetering on the brink of disaster. Since this spring, Beijing has canceled initial public offerings, fined tech companies billions for antitrust violations, forcibly shut down China's entire for-profit education industry, and sent CEOs running for the exits to avoid the government's ire. Even more dire, the Chinese megadeveloper Evergrande recently started missing payments on its more than $300 billion in debt, shaking...

CASPER — An unprecedented amount of out-of-state money is pouring into Rep. Liz Cheney’s reelection effort, as she campaigns in one of the nation’s highest-profile congressional races. The third quarter was the second-biggest fundraising period ever for Cheney, who is facing a tough reelection fight after her vote to impeach former President Donald Trump. She raised just over $1.7 million during that period, which runs from July to September. These hefty donations came on the heels of Cheney’s all-time fundraising record, $1.9 million, which occurred one cycle earlier. So far, only 6% of Cheney’s itemized individual donations have come from...

Gen. Mark Milley is voicing concern over China's apparent testing of hypersonic weapons, saying the development is "very close" to a "Sputnik moment." “What we saw was a very significant event of a test of a hypersonic weapon system. And it is very concerning,” the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said during an interview this week with Bloomberg Television's “The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations," according to Bloomberg News. “I don’t know if it’s quite a Sputnik moment, but I think it’s very close to that," Milley added. "It has all of our attention.”

"I've had someone saying they would rather kill me than Hitler," says 24-year-old Jennie*. "They said they would strangle me with a belt if they were in a room with me and Hitler. That was so bizarrely violent, just because I won't have sex with trans women." Jennie is a lesbian woman. She says she is only sexually attracted to women who are biologically female and have vaginas. She therefore only has sex and relationships with women who are biologically female. Jennie doesn't think this should be controversial, but not everyone agrees. She has been described as transphobic, a genital...

A new public benefit corporation backed by billionaires Reid Hoffman, George Soros, and others is launching Tuesday to fund new media companies and efforts that tackle disinformation. Why it matters: Good Information Inc. aims to fund and scale businesses that cut through echo chambers with fact-based information. As part of its mission, it plans to invest in local news companies. The group will be led by Tara McGowan, a former Democratic strategist who previously ran a progressive non-profit called ACRONYM. ACRONYM invested in for-profit companies that built media and technology solutions for progressive causes. It ran one of the largest...

President Biden on Tuesday seemed fixated on former President Donald Trump in a Virginia stump speech for Terry McAuliffe, the Democratic candidate for governor. Biden mentioned Trump by name 24 times during a brisk, 17-minute speech in a park near the Pentagon in northern Virginia, attempting to use his predecessor’s legacy to bash Republican Glenn Youngkin, who is tied with McAuliffe in polls in a state Biden won by 10 points just a year ago. The suddenly tight Virginia race with Youngkin has become a test of Biden’s political strength ahead of next year’s midterm elections and a possible rematch...

Many Americans fervently believe that the Second Amendment protects their right to bear arms everywhere, including at public protests. Many Americans also believe that the First Amendment protects their right to speak freely and participate in political protest. What most people do not realize is that the Second Amendment has become, in recent years, a threat to the First Amendment. People cannot freely exercise their speech rights when they fear for their lives. This is not hyperbole. Since January 2020, millions of Americans have assembled in public places to protest police brutality, systemic racism, and coronavirus protocols, among other things....

Everyone wants to stop dangerous people from getting guns. To some, the obvious solution lies in Red Flag laws, also called Extreme Risk Protection Orders, that enable easy confiscation. The expansion of entitlements bill before Congress already contains $2.5 billion in incentives for states to adopt these laws, but the House Judiciary Committee, of which one of the authors is a member, will vote on a federal bill on Wednesday. The votes will be along party lines, but it isn’t as if Democrats care about stopping violence and Republicans don’t. You would never know this from the media coverage, but...

Every year, aspiring college students complete admissions applications, with the hopes that their grades, extracurriculars, and recommendations will lift them above the pack, and earn them acceptance at the school of their choice. However, some college applicants are misrepresenting their race in an effort to use their desired school’s diversity efforts to gain admission, or obtain more financial aid. Intelligent.com asked 1,250 white college applicants ages 16 and older if they lied on their application by indicating they were a racial minority. The survey found that 34% of white Americans who’ve applied to college falsely claimed on their applications they’re...
