Explanation: Why would this mission go out as far as Jupiter -- but then not visit Jupiter? Lucy's plan is to follow different leads about the origin of our Solar System than can be found at Jupiter -- where Juno now orbits. Jupiter is such a massive planet that its gravity captures numerous asteroids that orbit the Sun ahead of it -- and behind. These trojan asteroids formed all over our Solar System and some may have been trapped there for billions of years. Flying by these trojan asteroids enables studying them as fossils that likely hold unique clues about...

You might think that every horror movie set in Maine is, by default, based on a Stephen King work, just based on sheer numbers of films made and their box office take. But there are plenty of scary movies set in Maine that have nothing to do with King’s works — some of which were actually filmed in the state, to boot. Here’s a list of some of the films, from wacky B-movies to modern-day horror classics. ‘Prophecy’ (1979) This creature feature, directed by John Frankenheimer, tells the ridiculous story of an environmental scientist and his wife (Robert Foxworth and...

Conventional Fusion in an Unconventional Place #Lawrence P. Forsley1 , Pamela A. Mosier-Boss1 1 Global Energy Corporation, United States E-mail: lawrence.p.forsley@nasa.gov Although hot fusion research began 70+ years ago, great technical difficulties exist in bringing fusion to commercial fruition. Consequently, there is a need for alternative approaches other than thermonuclear D-T fusion[1]. These approaches range from beam and muon-catalyzed fusion (with unlikely energy gain), to proton boron-11 fusion [2] (with high bremsstrahlung energy losses), to the less understood condensed matter nuclear reactions aka Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR). This talk will contrast the hot fusion triple-product[4] with the condensed matter...

Taliban militants allegedly beheaded a member of the Afghan junior women's national volleyball team, a coach told the Persian Independent. In an interview, coach Suraya Afzali (name changed) said a woman player named Mahjabin Hakimi was killed by the Taliban earlier in October, but nobody learnt about the gruesome murder as the insurgents had threatened her family not to talk about it. Mahjabin played for the Kabul Municipality Volleyball Club before the collapse of the Ashraf Ghani government, and was one of the club's star players. Then, a few days ago, pictures of what seemed to be her severed head...

In Glasgow Francis Will Be a No-Show. In His Place Will Be GretaIn Glasgow, at the United Nations conference on climate change to be held from October 31 to November 12, Francis will not be there. He has removed the trip from his schedule. But if he is not going - Father Thomas Reese, former editor of the Jesuit weekly “America,” proposed to his confrere Pope - why not include Greta Thunberg in the Vatican delegation? Why not give none other than her the pope’s seat? Not outside the conference, to demonstrate with the people oppressed by the politicians’ vacuous...

Modern society is awash in stuff. There’s stuff at the grocery store. At the hardware store. At Amazon and eBay. We eat stuff, wear stuff, buy stuff, and store stuff. Click some buttons, swipe a card, tap a phone – and presto! Stuff appears, like magic. At least for now. We are a carbon-based species. Carbon forms the foundation of our bodies and the external world we experience. Almost everything we touch is carbon-based. As I type this, I’m sitting on a couch made predominantly from foamed polyurethane, my feet resting on a carpet made from synthetic nylon. I just...

Kanye West debuted yet another freaky face mask while jetting into New York City on Monday. The rapper, 44, who has legally changed his name to Ye, was spotted at JFK Airport wearing a prosthetic mask bearing the resemblance of a Caucasian person with eye makeup. Despite concealing his highly recognizable face, all eyes were still on Ye as he made his way into a cab. The haunting plastic mask covered the entirety of his head, but Kanye accessorized it with a black baseball cap and slick grey headphones. He teamed the creepy accessory with a black cap, leather Balenciaga...

In the last several years, Americans have been sensing that something is seriously wrong with the current crop of young people. True, they are likely to have the most education credentials any generation has ever received. They also are technically-savvy, and as such, have a wealth of knowledge at their fingertips. But in spite of these factors, today’s students seem to exhibit a character that is high in sensitivity and low in knowledge. What gives? Why are our students turning out like this?Camille Paglia recently revealed the answer to that question. Paglia, a long-time Democrat, feminist, and college professor, believes the...

NEW YORK, NY—Experts are encouraging everyone to get their kids vaccinated, and are predicting dire consequences if this is not done. According to several top scientists, Pfizer executives won't meet their sales goals if you don't vaccinate your 5 to 11-year-old. "This would be absolutely catastrophic for struggling Pfizer execs," said Dr. Wexner, an expert. "Not vaccinating your kindergartener could jeopardize their ability to make their Porsche payments, pay off their mistresses, or remain platinum members at their golf clubs. We just can't let that happen." Experts say that while COVID poses almost zero risk to children, and the vaccine...

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer advocating for paid family leave. 'I'm not an elected official, and I'm not a politician,' Markle opened. 'I'm writing to you at this deeply important time - as a mom - to advocate for paid leave.' The duchess went on to detail her humble beginnings. The Taliban doubtless said that their governance would be different this time. Developments on the ground, however, tell a different story Three issues have emerged as being of key concern to the United States and the European Union—whose representatives have recently met those of the Taliban-- and members of G-20, in respect of the developments in Afghanistan. These are the humanitarian situation in that country, the danger of its becoming a spawning ground of international Islamist terrorism, as it had become during the earlier Taliban dispensation (1996-2001), and the human rights of all Afghans, particularly women, girls and the minorities....

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Federal water managers warned Wednesday that like other basins across the western U.S., the Pecos River Basin in New Mexico is likely to experience growing water shortages as temperatures continue to rise over the next century. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation discussed the findings of a recently completed study on the basin during a virtual briefing, saying the goal of the work was to better understand the threats to water supplies in the region due to climate change. Mayor Bill de Blasio has asked the City's Public Design Commission to authorize the removal of a statue of Thomas Jefferson from City Hall's Council chambers where it has stood for the past 187 years. "It's not just the fact that Jefferson owned slaves," de Blasio argued. "It's also the insidiously anti-social phrase 'unalienable rights' that he snuck into the Declaration of Independence that undermine the power of the people to democratically replace individualism with collectivism. As this past two years of pandemic should have taught us, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness conflict with the social discipline required...
